Howard's Blog Roll of Odd Bitz

I though I'd start up a blog on all the odd figures I'm doing. I'm not heading towards any particular amy but just doing what comes to me. But I take ages with some things so I thought I'd go for some feedback. When I get enthusiastic I'm actually very productive and a deadline is great for getting things done which is about the only reason I completed an entry for the Nitty Gritty painting competition.

But I'll detail that later.

At the moment I'm working on a Kaptain Badruk and I've been doing him on and off for about 6 months but he's been getting there in the last few weeks.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v201/howardtreesong/DSCF3643.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v201/howardtreesong/DSCF3640.jpg
Close ups under bright flash are never flattering are they?

Then I'm going to get working on some Red Corsairs. I don't know what I'm doing with these, I'll just go through the bits box for some suitably chaotic bits. I picked up a Huron Blackheart discounted on my summer holiday and recently got a box of assorted GW plastics in a charity shop, old plague marines and a mix of normal and chaos marines. They are gak, the previous owner used so much glue that the necks are filled in on the marines and in places it's running down the legs. Are they fit only for the bin? Maybe, but I'm going to cut them about and see what I can make because there's nothing to lose after I bought them all for about 50p. Actually it was always worth it because the some of the spare backpacks withh go on on RT traitor Marines that are in need.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v201/howardtreesong/DSCF3644.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v201/howardtreesong/DSCF3648.jpg

I've also got some Night Goblins coming through a trade for a conversion idea, so I hope to bring them to you soon.

Re:Howard's Blog Roll of Odd Bitz

Here's my entry for the recent painting competition "Nitty Gritty Armour", a Deathstrike Missile. It's mainly made from an old Baslisk kit and the fairly new 1/48th Pegasus Models V2 Rocket, a snip at the £5 or £6 I paid for it. I knew instantly what I wanted it for but the scratchbuilding element put me off until I noticed this competition and realised that as I had barely more than a week left I should crack on as soon as possible.

The bits, the remains of a Baslisk, the V2 and some plastic card.

The model mostly done. The gun for the Baslisk was recycled as the piston for the launch ramp and in the first pic you can see the metal pin on which the V2 rests to be attached to the model, until it's fired that is.

Other little details added, rivets were cut in salami slices from a length of plastic rod and eagles came from the vehicle acessory sprues.

Here's the final piece, it was painted mainly in vallejo German grey with a drybrush and dust added with pastels.

Went to the IPMS show in Bath this weekend. Picked up a few odds and ends such as a few of the 40mm "Projekt X" range and a more normal 28mm British WW1 pilot who will become Biggles!

My latest piece for the show was this, the WW2 german Heuschrecke 10, or "Grasshopper". Only a handful were built and it's unusual feature was a removable turret that could be placed onto a frame with wheels all assembled from the vehicle to create a gun that could be used seperately to the vehicle.

Also I dug these out over the weekend. I painted them when I was about 16 but I've got other Inquisitor miniatures unpainted that I'll have a go at over the next few months.

Just putting up some pictures of Huron Blackheart and his Corsairs. Camera flash does no favours as usual, I'll have to try photograping in natural light...whenever the sun decides to appear again. The red armour seems very washed out in these pics, there's more highlighing and shading noticable on the real thing, but perhaps it's a sign more has to be done. Basing and guns need drilling, so they're a little off yet. I'm happy with the way the Marines have come out though, cobbled together from the bits box they were worth the effort.

Lots of things being looked at over the holiday period. I've wanted a figure of the Emperor for a while now, and there's little hope of getting hold of the Ronin model even if I could afford it.
Happy Christmas people. I had a few odds figures this year, couple from Heresy and Hasslefree. Anyway, I pressed on with this Emperor by liberally applying Milliput. Need some shaping and filing, but its looking like a good base to work on. I'm not sure what to use as a head yet.

In other news I though I'd show you this. I made this for my wife this year and it got a good laugh that made it all worth it. It's a custom action figure of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru...post Stormtrooper visit. I did all sort for this, sourcing blank templates of the packaging, DVD capture programme, spare toy packaging and some Milliput and painting for the bones. Lots of fun though suprisingly time consuming. If I make any more customs, I know all the places you can go wrong.

Here's my RT Inquisitor from earlier. I've not seen this figure painted often but it's often grey. I thought that was a bit dull, and I've done a lot of red recently, so I went for purple. I thought with the gold it would look a little regal, it's certainly different anyway. I think the cut down Chaos backpack works ok too.

I think they are all spare arms from plastic Mordenheim humans. I was checking this last night but I couldn't see them in the current Empire Militia boxset, but I think they are the same models. Fortunately they gave you a lot of alternate arms, and I managed to cobble together 5 pairs of gauntlets.

Re:Howard's Blog Roll of Odd Bitz

Some goodies came in the post today, some of the range of Scrunts from Bob Olley Miniatures. These ones in particular seem very much in the style of the unreleased 2nd edition squats that only made it to the prototype stage.

Anyway I picked up a scrunt with a sausage dog mascot, and the set of psychic scrunts along with some central hub device that the all plug into (not pictured). I'm very much looking forward to these as I've long wanted to build a squat army of some sort but the original miniatures are always too expensive on eBay. Of the various space dwarf miniatures available from various companies these are my favourites, the sculpts are fine in detail and top quality, better than some of GWs recent output I imagine.
