Painting Space Wolf Shoulder Pads and Other Questions

So, I've pretty much worked out the color scheme of my SWs. I'm doing Bran Redmaw's Great Company, so I'm not gonna be using as much yellow as is normally seen on the Wolves. However, I've got some painting issues I hope you guys can help me with, especially since I can't trust myself with freehand designs.

- Priests (Rune, Wolf, and Iron) are part of the Great Wolf's Company, so they should have the Wolf That Stalks Between Stars shoulder pad design, which the codex shows as a white wolf on a black background. But the transfers are black. How should I accomplish this shoulder design?

- How do you guys paint pack markings? I'm a traditionalist so I'm using the classic markings, not the transfers, but I don't know how to get a result that is standard across a whole pack. I was thinking maybe use a tiny piece of card as a guide/stencil sort of thing, but I don't know.

- How would you guys suggest making banners?

- I want to use red as a spot color, like the cover painting and GW's Canis Wolfborn. Where would you guys suggest putting the red? I was thinking maybe knee caps and power fists.

Thanks in advance.

Painting Space Wolf Shoulder Pads and Other Questions

You can reverse the great company scheme to black on white. Also, it is perfectly acceptable to paint the shoulder pad as the great company or pack they are assigned to.

What do you mean by pack markings? There are a variety of patterns. Find one that is easy for you. I like split colors and slashes.

For banners, the SW box comes with two banners. You could also use the SM command banner and SM back banners- use the wolf topper from the SW box.

Re:Painting Space Wolf Shoulder Pads and Other Questions

What do you mean by pack markings?

By pack markings I mean the designs on the right shoulder pad to denote the pack that a SW belongs to. I just don't have the skill for such straight lines and to reproduce them on 5-10 guys.

For the banners, I was wondering if anyone knows a good method to create a banner for my standard bearer (this guy http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat200005a&prodId=prod1140173) to carry. Again I'm not a great painter, but I would like to have an ornate banner.

Re:Painting Space Wolf Shoulder Pads and Other Questions

I suggest much patience and thin layer after thin layer.

I would avoid using the transfers as anything more thatn a basis for the design. Practice on your Grey Hunters and Blood Claws first, then move on to Wolf Guard and Long Fangs, save the HQ's for last.

As for the banner, I would use a bit of linen cloth cut into the desired shape. Use clear nail polish and a form that you've draped it over to give it the right rigid shape. Then paint it.

Since it sounds as though you might not feel up to doing such a work, then get some parchment-like paper from your local copy center/paper supplier. Image search an appropriate design, print it in the correct proportions, cut it out, and hang it on your model. Lightly coat with a spray fixative, using a brush on might cause the image to run/smear.

Hope this helps.

You might also try laying down your initial marks with a well sharpened pencil, followed by a fine tipped sharpy. This will give you a sold reference point for your painting.

Re:Painting Space Wolf Shoulder Pads and Other Questions

You can do the transfers over a dark grey to get the shape, then paint over it with a lighter grey. Repaint the background black, then you can touch up the design with the light grey and detail it with white. A fiddly process, but the results are good. I know it has been done in White Dwarf before.
