Safety First!!

Ok,certain post in the "Gun owner thread",along with a "No skateboarding" sign I saw in a parking lot at lunch, have prompted me to ask the question "Have we,as a culture, become saftey conscience to the point of fanaticism?"
I'm all for the aplication of comman sense when it comes to safety, don't point a loaded wepon at your head, don't drive blindfolded, keep your genitals away from power tools etc,but does anyone else belive that people have gone totaly overboard concerning "safety".
I have seen parents who are,IMO, rasing emotional cripples becuase they treat their children as though they are made of glass and will shatter if they take a tumble, and people who handle cups of coffee from McDonalds as one might handle a grenade.
So, is it just me? or is the world becoming a "safer place" at the cost of our backbone?

Re: Safety First!!

With regards to Health and Safety culture, I am currenty studying for a qualification in it for my new job. In the new year I will be working for a small construction and development firm, H&S legislation has become such an issue that almost all work places and companies need to employ someone just to make sure they are following the law and everyone is doing what they should be.

Whilst I can see the need and the sense behind trying to prevent accidents and injuries, I do wonder how much of this is prompted by the fact that if you triped over a box in work 15 years ago then the boss would have said "it's your own fault, look where you are going", now you can take him to court and claim your £20,000 for a spraigned wrist and emotional trauma.

The thing that makes me laugh about the Paedo situation is that in the same news programme you will have a report on a "disgusting 65 year old predator who lured a helpless 15 year old girl to his home for sex" followed by a report on "a vicious 15 year old hoodie thug who battered a 65 year old frail pensioner for his wallet" It's almost like we are being told "It's very wrong to have sex with children but if you do have to, be careful as they may have a knife on them"

I think the "no skateboarding" signs are in place to prevent disruption and vandalism by said individuals.

Not saying that all skaters vandalize but around my parts most of the skaters seem to be HS age so I don't think it's out of fear for the safety of the skaters. Most of it is to prevent disruption of traffic and in some more professional businesses like banks and whatnot it prevents people from getting the wrong impression.

I mean, if your business allows groups of kids/young adults who dress to look like hoodlums gather in the parking lot and impede traffic and parking and generally make customers or potential customers feel uneasy it's not going to make your business look very "people" friendly.

I, for one don't mind the skaters in the parking lot. I've gotten to run over and destroy a fair share of skateboards in the past 5 years.

Sadly, Health and Safety bollocks seems to be largely related to how readily the population sue.

For example, in order to cover themselves in the event of a technicality, packets of Peanuts, Cashew Nuts, Brazil Nuts etc, actually have to state that they, you guessed it....contain nuts.

Blame the triggerhappy Compo arsholes!

As for over protective parents, blame the scare mongering gutter press. There hasn't been a sudden explosion in Paedophile activity, it's just paedo headlines sell lots of Newspapers. That, and over the past couple of decades, the population has become less of a community. When I were a nipper (1980's) I'd play in the Neuk (Scottish Close) with the other kids. There would always be one of the Mums or Dads keeping an eye on us. Not out of fear we'd do something stupid or some Rastapaedopimpdrugpushergaylord (Copyright the Daily Bastard) would come and bum us, but in case we skinned our knees falling off a bike, or if the ball got kicked out into the road. Thanks again to the Daily Nazi and its ilk, community has been shattered, as it insists nobody (but itself of course) is to be trusted, so nobody is trusted. Pathetic isn't it?

Freedom of the Press should not mean Freedom to talk utter bollocks to shift a few more copies.

I agree. When I was a kid, I did lots of stuff that by all rights should have ended up with me dead or maimed. I got some band-aids and went right back outside. Never wore shoes in the summer, so the bottoms of my feet got hobbit-tough. Now, kids have no opportunities to experience small hurts, so their pain thresholds are so low that they can bark their shins or stub their toes and be so traumatized that they need somebody to dial 911 for them. People are terrified that they'll do something a little wrong that will kill them, well they need to be told that something is going to kill every single one of you, get over it. Enjoy what little life you've got, you pathetic sheeple.
