Kroot models...a question and a rant

As I put together some Kroot this evening out of the Battleforce (Using the handy instructions to know what pieces went where) I realized that Kroot seem to have a lot of extraneous pieces of gear...the sprue has like 10 different pieces of gear that are allegedly optional, according to the instructions. Yet, in the Tau Empire codex, there are exactly 3 options you can give to a Kroot Carnivore squad - upgrade one to a Shaper, give the entire unit a 6 save for +1 point per model, and give the Shaper either a Pulse Rifle or Carbine at 5 points. Where is all this extra gear that is supposedly an option?

As for the rant, I have to complain about how difficult it is to model Kroot properly. The arms, for example: if you put the gun arm on first, it's tricky to work that left arm in properly and glue it on right. If you put the left arm on first, it's tricky to keep proper contact points on the gun arm. One of my Kroot's arms is barely sticking on, and it's only really working because I'm using a type of glue that cements the two pieces together. And with the backpack flap things, why are those so awkward to glue on? There's like no contact point that fits evenly, and it always feels to me that the pack is just sort of stuck back there. Plus, the head gets in the way like crazy...

Sorry to ramble on. I'm just peeved, and a forum seems to be a good place to vent.

Kroot models...a question and a rant

Gluing models together is often a pain.
Eldar plastics are really frustrating, but think of it another way; if the models were made to be easily glued, the poseability would be severely comprimised. So this way we all get to give them a little originality.

As for the 'extra' bits, I highly doubt they signify anything. Like IG water canteens or Dire Avenger Shoulder-thingies.

They don't have rules, they don't need to be applied to conform with WYSIWYG, they just look cool.

If you don't want 'em, don't stick 'em on.

Re:Kroot models...a question and a rant

The knives, trophies etc are part of the fluff of the kroot: they take trophies from their conquests, they are a fairly primitive race with primitive fire arms, the only ones smart enough to pick up a pulse rifle are the shapers.

For example those flintlock pistols: no rules for those, they have a rack of meat with a meat hook for a trophy.

If you really want to clear up the shoulder problem, just stick a pauldron over it...but as a personal choice I refrain from those, they seem a bit clean for my tastes - I keep them nice and simplistic as possible.

A kroot shaper is given pulse rifle as one of his arms in opposition to a kroot rifle, this means he loses his extra attack in close combat but gains some minimal ranged benefits...dunno why people choose that, still dun do squat against terminators. They give both arms in a pack for you to choose - they used to have them seperate for some reason, you either bought the kroot rifle or the pulse rifle. I haven't seen a pulse carbine arm for the kroot shaper yet though...

Yeah, the head does get in the way, but to be honest that area under the chin NEVER gets seen in battle, no real point highlighting it, the only issue is getting the base coat and then the first colour on it and then it's no problem.

I pin stuff...and use greenstuff to cover up seems.
I recently used them to convert a Necromunda Ratskin Gang (Krootskins).
Lots of posing and such...I think there is alot of freedom with the model.

I guess that scares some people...

Kroot models...a question and a rant

I agree that the kroot shoulders and arms line up terribly. Plastic glue will bond the edges/parts that do contact each other. Adding the shoulder pads to hide the gap and gluing it to both the shoulder (Torso side) and arm will further strengthen the bond. Otherwise, alot of filing/sanding will make the contact point flush.
