Ork bosspole and regrouping question.

Hey guys, since you guys are very quick with replies, thought I would ask this question instead of searching through thousands of topics. Played against an ork player with a different opinion.

He had 8 boys + 1 nob with bosspole. He took a morale test and failed, and then he used the bosspole to re-roll that test after putting a wound on a boy. However, that boy didn't make his armor save and got removed from the table. So now, does he take a LD 9 or 8 re-roll morale test?

Regarding the regrouping issue, an unit of 19 ork boys + 1 nob with bosspole is down to 9 boys + 1 nob, and they try to regroup. They fail their morale test, and then the nob uses bosspole to re-roll. However, the boy didn't make the save throw. Do they continue the re-roll for regroup or does it stops there?

Last question is, can that boy take his armor save after the re-roll morale test instead? (If yes, then the first 2 questions will never become issues.)

Thank you very much.

Re:Ork bosspole and regrouping question.

There's no hard written rule covering the situation, but most players follow the following steps:

1) Take LD test.
2) If passed, end.
3) Else, whack a boy with a bosspole, if both are available.
4) Take save.
5) If failed, remove model.
6) Reroll LD test.
7) Resolve LD test results.

The only thing that is actually covered in your questions in the core rulebook is the "continue to reroll". A given test can only be rerolled once, no matter how many things give you the ability to reroll it. For an overkill example, in a standard game you can have up to 12 bosspoles in a single unit (2x HQ attached to a squad of 10 Nobz), but no matter how many of those remain, you can only reroll once per instance of a given test.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And for clarification (realized I didn't actually answer it), the LD from Mob Rule adjusts as soon as the boy which failed his save is removed from the table, so in your example, the unit would re-roll on LD 8.

To me it implies the wound happens before the LD test. Since the LD adjusts immediately in case of a casualty, it stands to reason that the re-roll happens @ LD 8.

EDIT: let me rephrase that - you failed a check against LD9, you reroll the check against LD9. Losing an orc on the way has no bearing on it.

Ork bosspole and regrouping question.

Exactly. While one could possibly argue that the ability to "reroll" the test would mean that the original leadership value is used, it won't fly very well with your opponent, and there's no written explanation of how it should work. Unless GW officially errata's the bosspole and how the reroll works, you should play it as is most beneficial to the opponent in the name of fairness.

After all, having to play against us Orks is unfair enough!

Ork bosspole and regrouping question.

You are granted a re-roll of the failed morale test by the bosspole (C:O, p. 92).

Re-rolls are exactly that, pick up the dice and roll again (Page 2, 40k rulebook).

This is a 2nd chance at the same roll, not a new roll. You cannot change anything about the roll for a re-roll (e.g., you have to re-roll ALL the dice, not just the ones you don't like) and have to abide by the new result for better or worse. The RAW and RAI are clear that a re-roll uses all the same properties as the initial roll.

It takes bizarre contortions of the mind to twist this into thinking that you would modify the score required on a re-roll.

Re:Ork bosspole and regrouping question.

I love the bosspole rule! I played 5 ed. for the first time last week having only played 2nd ed. previously (about 4 years ago!).
That new wargear item is great! Better then the old standard bearer rule I reckon simply for the fun

"Aaagghh! We're getting smashed! Run!"
CLAAANNGGGG!! *urk!*
"No runnin'!!"
"Yes boss!"

Love it

And - coincidentally - thanks for the clarification. As I was new to 5th ed. my opponent made me adjust my dice according to the new amount of boyz and I was too new to the "new" rules to argue. Especially as I had spent most of the game trying to grasp the Assault rules!
Good to know!

Ahh no rulebook so I'll do a naughty and say; I think that one is re-rolling for the test that one just failed so no check as to the squad are made, one isn't re0taking the test just rerolling the die.

But really atm I have no idea ^_^
