Eldar Spirit Stones, and the like

Everytime I try to paint a spirt stone, or its equivalent, it ends up looking bad . I have read step-by-step directions on how to paint them but I always mess up or something. Lately I've been leaving just solid colors on my models since it does look better than if I attempted to paint the highlights. I would greatly appreciate any advice on painting the highlights on spirit stones and their equivalents .

I've found that for small details, like face and eyes, using very small amounts of paint (ie the size of about three or four grains of sand) that is straight from the pot. Its how I get even coats on faces without much mess. It takes patients to do the layers of color, but work from the bottom up, from darkest to brightest and let every layer dry.

I got you covered: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?catId=cat380004&categoryId=400035&section=&pIndex=1&aId=1100010&start=2

GW actually is a good resource. Look through their articles under each respective race and you're sure to pick up some good painting and modelling techniques.

EDIT: Here is another one I stumbled across. Your models are more likely to be like this for a while, but it gets easier: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?catId=cat200013a&categoryId=900005&section=&aId=3400032

Re:Eldar Spirit Stones, and the like

I use two brushes for my gems, a 1/0 (or simply 0) and a 5/0 with a very fine point.

I actually do them a bit backwards, starting with the lightest shade of the gem and using the *side* of the 1/0 paintbrush's bristles to coat the gem. Then I use the next darker shade to make a slightly smaller oval, and then the darkest shade for the smallest oval - essentially concentric rings/ovals.

Then I dilute Skull White 1 part with water 3-5 parts and use the tip of the 5/0 brush to make a tiny dot on the darkest oval and a small line across the lightest oval on the bottom. Looks pretty decent!
