Is there much actual sleuthing and deduction in the film then ? It does have a good cast but i had my doubts when I sawe the trailer and..well... the director didn't exactly inspire with confidence.

It is no more unfaithful than any other adaptation, it just focus's on one aspect of his personality that others de-emphasized while playing up another. It also has Robert Downey Jr. playing a pretty disheveled and obsessive Holmes, as opposed to the traditional elegant one, but I don’t think the characterization is a terrible sin against Doyle. He’s still portrayed as the deductive genius. That quote from The Red Headed League is a classic, and I think this film very much reflects it.

They’ve definitely upped the ante on the action and adventure content to make appeal to a wider audience, but it’s still a good movie, and (IMO) even a good Sherlock movie.

Robert Downey, Jr. was actually fantastic as Holmes. I like to think of this rendition as a showing of the man behind the man - rather than show off him being cool, calm and composed while easily solving a case, the movie portrays him as being disheveled and a bit absent-minded at times.
