True, there are certain things we all want to stay the same, but adaption and change is why we go to see them on the big screen. To see exactly what's done differently this time.
Shermlock Holmės

It’s a Guy Ritchie film- therefore it features lots of quick cuts, lots of action, slow-mo fighting, and bareknuckle boxing badassery.

It also has Robert Downey Jr. playing a pretty disheveled and obsessive Holmes, as opposed to the traditional elegant one, but I don’t think the characterization is a terrible sin against Doyle. He’s still portrayed as the deductive genius. That quote from The Red Headed League is a classic, and I think this film very much reflects it.

They’ve definitely upped the ante on the action and adventure content to make appeal to a wider audience, but it’s still a good movie, and (IMO) even a good Sherlock movie.

Re:Shermlock Holmės

I just saw it earlier today, and I thought it was very well-done. I, too was skeptic at first - as others have said, the trailers really make it look to be a very action-oriented film - but it had a fair amount of sleuthing and deductive reasoning in the midst of all the action. Heck, I was slightly worried the whole time that the story would just give out no more explanation for some of the effects than "It's magic", but the scene at the end with Holmes and Blackwood on the bridge was extremely cool. And the slow-mo fight scenes were brilliant, though I wish there would have been more than just the two.

Robert Downey, Jr. was actually fantastic as Holmes. I like to think of this rendition as a showing of the man behind the man - rather than show off him being cool, calm and composed while easily solving a case, the movie portrays him as being disheveled and a bit absent-minded at times. You can't expect a world-famous detective to be completely prepared and proper ALL the time, right?
