I would Primer white, then spray Red( will give the red a brighter color vs primering Black which will give the Red a darker color).
Then wash with a Red/chestnut( more red then Brown).
Pick out highlights . Should have a army painted in a few days.

Re:Best Way to Paint Blood Angels

For a dark look:
Prime black (dont have to use if you use mechrite red)
Foundation Mechrite RED (if you primed make sure you thin the paint just a lil bit)
*this is where you have to decide how detail you want to go, if you want to blend(harder) to a highlight or extreme highlights(easier)*
Washes you can use: Badab Black, Gryphonne Sepia, Devlan Mud.
Personaly id use Gryphonne Sepia, gives a shade of brown which gives a realistic feel to the red. Since shadowed areas of red look brown. But less noticable for table top. Go for devlan mud for a in between detail look or if you just want table top quality that stands out well in groups badab black.
Midtone should be a 50/50 blood red and Mechrite red. (if its not red enough for you just use 100 blood red)Then use Blood REd on the edges.
Followed by a light blazing orange on the accented highlights.
*tip: use a red wash after the blazing orange accented highlights if it doesnt blend well and/or looks to orange.

hope this helps

great comments,
thanks guys.

i also have another question!
when painting the marine do i leave the recesses in the legs (those fine lines marked into the plastic, i think its control panels or something) as the original basecoat, or do i just paint over them and then wash it?

Best Way to Paint Blood Angels

I've always sprayed an undercoat of black on my BA's, followed by red gore base and 2 or more drycoats of blood red. A red or brown ink can be used if you've the time and inclination. I've never sprayed the reds with a can but I have used a spray gun and the results were very fine (perhaps a bit too uniform if you want your troops looking grubby).

They come out a nice dark red, sometimes looking a bit ruddy/brown or rusty almost. With minimal trim (the black BA insignia, black chest plates) they look suitably "no nonsense" IMHO.

I give assault troops yellow chest eagles (I couldn't stand to have all my assault troops with yellow heads) and devestators get the blue helmet (because I have so few). Then I go to town with the black and gold on veterans and command squads.
