He spat into the spray heavily, with evident contempt. Shadowbrand knew this red-maned giant had been a noble once, a ring-giver with his own hall of many stout benches where warriors toasted his skill at arms and generosity. Betrayed and dispossessed by his own kinsmen he had eked out his way since. Sometimes a bandit, sometimes a warlord--always a killer, as he was raised from a whelp to be. Eyjolfur had been a proud man and, by turns, a desperate one.

"No, by my Raven Eye, I have no patience to wait on star and cloud. I have always been a wolf stalking the edges of that plowed, sweat-sewn field. I am not content save when my teeth are red with the life's blood of my prey. Not until my enemies' steaming gore is strewn about the ground for the crows."

He paused, seeing Shadowbrand grimace. Eyjolfur leaned down close to the blond man and pointed to his remaining clear eye. "That's all there is to this breathing world, as I've seen with this. Unless you mean to find us a new world?" The giant reared back, a deep growl of mirth gurgling in his throat. His face split into a jagged grin and he laughed aloud as he turned to face the distant western horizon. "A new world!"

I was born a Thrall with only the name "Rouk" as I was the biggest boy on the lumber camp. -looks at the great diffrence in height between him and his friend-

But one faithful day raiders from a rival clan killed the foreman and most of the workers, I escaped.

I later met my wife Freya and later she bore young Jouni.

And I may very well offer a new world. Beyond this damned blue sea is a whole world not a frozen one. A one full of fat lazy sheep for us to feed upon.

Do you know of what kind of sheep I speak of Eyjolfur?

In the wake of his fall, Eyjolfur had learned the runes. Treacherous kin had taken him after mortally wounding him and hung him upside down from a tree where he swung nine nights. In the moonlight of the ninth night, the starving and more than half dead chief was cut down by a hunter's stray arrow. The hunter approached to collect the game but found instead the near-corpse of Eyjolfur.

That good hunter carried Eyjolfur back to his lodge and healed him. In the delirium of his ordeal, the redmane spoke with a hooded man who had but one eye. This man offered to teach Eyjolfur the runes for the price of his eye and the redmane accepted. When he finally awoke in the hunter's lodge, he could see only out of one eye. The hunter informed him that the other was now as white as milk throughout and that the socket was wreathed in deep bruises.

Eyjolfur told the hunter of his vision and the hunter considered it, finally telling the redmane that the hooded man was Odin, who had also swung wounded from a tree for nine nights to learn the runes. And since that day, Eyjolfur could feel Odin, the Old Ash Man, see through his milky eye. And in these moments, Eyjolfur might look inward with the eye that remained his own to briefly glimpse a portent.
