I was reading about gender roles and setrotypes.
One thing that popped into my mind.
Why are these still around?
Why must men be the bread winner and the women a house wive.
We all know today that both genders are equal and can do the same work.
But why do these streotype still exist.
and why must men be portrayed as strong ,nuckled headed jockeys who love sports.
discuss.

Because people can't change at a flick of a switch. Some of it is down to instincts right back when we were cavemen, the men would go out and hunt while the females would stay at the camp. The other contributing factor is upbringing. If a child is brought up in a household where they see this kind of thing going on it gets etched into their mind sometimes without realising it.

In my household both my parents worked long hours and equally, they both tried to spend as much time with me and my brother as they could, and also made 99% of choices together. These ideals have been etched onto me because for me, non-stereo typing comes naturally.

That said, even the most educated or well adjusted individual would be lying if they said they never treated others differently. I work with clients with mental issues and also clients with behaviour issues day to day so I see poeple's reactions all the time.

Also, lastly, it depends where you look. At my own work we employ men and women and at a rough guess I'd say that the numbers are pretty much equal.

Eventually, stereotyping will get less and less with each passing year and with each new generation, as well as new stereotyping appearing in years to come as a result of current affairs in your country or worldwide.

Its human nature

Because workin' is a man's work! And when that man gets home, he expects a sammich and a beer. Or at least some toast. But if she burns it... ooooh if she burns it... It'll be down the stairs for her!

Joking aside, it's not just a stereotype, unfortunately

Facts:

-In most occupations, a man will still be paid more than a woman, even if they're doing the exact same job for the exact same company, for the exact same length of time.
-Despite women being proven to make better managers/executives, men are more likely to be promoted.
-Most cleaning and food product commercials still show only women performing the associated tasks.
-There are radio and television ads that are floating around the media cesspool right now that tell parents to put their sons into multiple sports or they'll be social outcasts and failures later on.
-many commercials for professional sports that're sponsored by beer companies subtly imply that men who don't watch sports and drink beer are all either a)homosexual b)unattractive c)lacking a social life/circle of friends.

And these are just a few things that seem to get by in a world that loves to flash the badge of "Political Correctness". Funny how those crusaders only catch things that don't matter...

Some jobs have no women in that field due to the fact of these differences, but on the flip side there are alot of stuff men are as an average are incompetant at.

As to the whole bread winning thing, my fiancee is about to complete a masters in biochemical engeneering while i'm doing chemisty so she will probably earn more than me. I have no problem with it. The social stigma againt stay at home husband is insane, a housewife could do half the work of a househusband and he will still be seen as lazy, especially by women (sexism works both ways)

Norwulf wrote:I've heard that women are inclined to be better at math and science, something in how their brains work I think.

you got it the wrong way round, studies showed that on average males were better at mathematical problem solving

Its something to do with the way that our bodies grow when in the womb and its not much later that the X and Y chromosome sort themselves and decide whether we are to grow as females or grow as males, and its for that reason as to why all males have nipples even though males have no use for them.
