Skaven Questions.

I'll get right to the point, are doomwheels worth it? Really would like to pick up a couple, and not sure how to go about the rare slots (two for a 2k+ game). I like the hellpit abomination, I'm just really bad at converting, so almost don't even want to touch it. Same goes for the plague catapult, seems cool, just not interested. That leaves the doomwheel, on paper it looks pretty good, just want to know how they fair in battle. My other fantasy army is orcs, so I'm used to randomness.

Another question, how have you guys (for that that have) gone about modeling your weapon teams that they didn't make kits for? Any quick solutions out there?

Also, I have 80 clanrats on sprue, should I just make them all clanrats, or is there a purpose to slaves? I kind of think they don't look like my style, but if there is enough tactical sense to taking them, then I will.

Anyway, thanks in advance for any help.

The doomwheel is spectacular at what it does.

What it does is kill monsters dead and flank charge units

And there is always room for a model that can do that in your army

Skaven Questions.

It's also really well costed, if not fairly under-costed, particularly against armies that aren't ItP. The skaven dude in my escalation league has run one in every game from 500 on (except 2 where he took rat ogres, which failed, as did the games ), and it's totally the bane of the league. At that level the thing wins games by itself! I can only imagine two would be pretty damn fearsome @ 2000+!

- Salvage

Skaven Questions.

Slaves can be awesome if used correctly. They're awesome for diverting or taking the charge from Frenzied units, and if you position them in front of your own, you can set up counter charges.

Blocks of slaves in front of your army is good for screening, both for incoming fire and keeping your own Frenzied units from running off.

They're also an excellent candidate for the Death Frenzy spell, as it doesn't matter if they die, and if you can get the charge, they have 15 attacks if they're only 5 wide. Slaves near the general will have Ld 6 or 7 plus their own ranks, and can actually hold up in combat for a turn or two.

100 points will get you 4 blocks of 25 slaves, but I always toss in a musician and a champion. The musician good for when they run, as a 3 is a lot more likely than a 2 on 2d6, and near the general they may even rally on a 7 or 8. I like the champions, since they give you a couple attacks when normally the whole front rank will die. A Death Frenzied champ has 4 attacks by himself, which will usually get you a wound on core infantry. (I had one get 2 wounds on a hydra once)

For slave models, the clanrats are nice, but they only give you a couple slave models in the box. I buy gnoblars since they're something like 20 for $25, and they're easy to put together. And it makes since that they would be slaves to skaven.

If your opponents don't mind, sure. The only issue would be that night goblins have spears and shields, so make sure to tell them they only have a hand weapon. (Unless you give them shields, of course)

Skaven Questions.

I watched a 2000-point game recently where the skaven player took a screaming bell, a doomwheel, and an HPA. These were high-level players, members of the noted Warbringers club.

The bell blew itself up turn 1. It took nearly all his infantry with it, leaving one unit of slaves, the doomwheel, and the HPA as his surviving units.

The skaven player still won the game. Do not underestimate the doomwheel.
