Aluminum was just an example. The idea is to use some type of lightweight "magnetic" metal, instead of two magnets. I'm surprised this hasn't been done before, since you have all those articles on the internet about magnetizing Preds/Rhinos/RBs. I figured there was a tutorial somewhere on the interwebs.

Thing is, it's usually just easier to use two magnets.

Actually obtaining "lightweight magnetic metal" can be pretty difficult in some parts of the world, and even if it is available it is often costly.

Also, a pair of magnets allows you to determine where the piece will stick, as opposed to sticking, say, the sponson to the side of the tank using a magnetic and metal.

Another reason people typically use two magnets is because while they are strong, a lot of magnets aren't strong enough to form a good bond if there is several mm of plastic in the way. I do it the same way, and if I find the pull is a little weak, I just toss another magnet in the hole.
