new orks

Ok so my friend, who dosnt have a comp, wants to start an ork army. He likes nobs and the fact that they have 2W and can take so many options. He also likes boyz. I told him that YMMV if you go just stright nobs or just boyz but I dont play orks I play CSM I just kill orks. So any ideas would be great. O yea and he wants to know if a warboss is worth getting. Thanks for all the help.

new orks

I started playing Orks (and 40k) about 7 months ago, so I think I know exactly where your friend is coming from. My suggestion for greenskin victory and cost effectiveness would be to pick up models from Assault on Black Reach. If he's footslogging, AOBR is the cheapest place to get boyz, and he'll need a ton. You can easily convert the nobs with the bitz from a 5-man Nob box, and deffkoptas will provide your much-needed anti-vehicle.

If your friend can pick up the AOBR models at retail (w/o buying the Marines) and the Nob box, he'll have plenty to paint, plenty to play and learn with, and the strong core of any Ork army for super cheap.

If he can get some proxies, I would suggest that you let him play several games with stand-in models so that he can try different styles of orks and find the one that he enjoys most. This way, he's not hemmed into a footslogging horde when he decides he'd rather be shooty, or something. Play a couple games with different army lists: footslogging, mechanized, shooty, kan wall, etc. and see what clicks. Orks especially need to be focused or they will be no fun to play.

From there, you should be able to target the starting point (probably AoBR anyway) and look for cheap retailers and/or eBay for the core stuff.

But my advice for any new player, any new army: proxy and play to see if it clicks. This is far too expensive and time-consuming of a hobby to just right in without some experience firsthand, and nothing's worse than investing in a useless wing of an army when you go the other way.

I second the AOBR orks set. check ebay or something so you only have to pay for the orks. have him pick an ork theme (stand ins as needed) and play till he finds his fav.

~Curtis

Keep in mind though, all Boyz in the AoBR set are choppa/slugga, arguably not the best choice for green tide. At most, get the equivalent of one box unless you just know you'd rather have the choppas than shootas.

Thanks for all the help guys. Just a few more questions. In the boyz box box does it come with enough bits to make them all one type of boy?
new orks

In the boyz box box does it come with enough bits to make them all one type of boy? Like all shoota with some rokkitz?
The boyz come with enough shootas or sluggas to make 10 full models of either, but only has enough bodies to assemble 10 total models. Each box also comes with an 11th miscellaneous body, which you can convert into a nob, big shoota, rokkit, or mek (at least I think those last parts can make a mek, but who builds a mek?). Since you can only field 3 special weapons with 30 boyz, that works out about the way you would want it to. With the new nobz set out, which makes much better looking models than the vanilla nob in the boyz packs, I would suggest buying the nobz pack to fill your unit's nobz. That is, if you actually care what they look like. A klaw is a klaw if you don't care.

And how many powerclaws does the nob box have?
3 or 4. If I recall correctly, it's 3 + 1 cybork klaw, but I could be mistaken as it has been a while since I opened my kits.

And are mega armour nobs worth it?
Depends on who you ask. A lot of players would say that you get so much on the cheap in comparison to a regular nobz squad that it just doesn't make sense not to take them when you are talking about taking nobz. A lot of players will scoff at that, and insist that a painboy + diverse equipment beats all, regardless of the considerably higher cost for the same number of klaw attacks. But then again, most people don't field 100% klaws on kitted out nobz squads, which can help to mitigate the cost.

So really, the answer is a question - Are you looking for nobz to = ___ x 4 klaw attacks? Or are you looking for dead 'ard boyz that don't lose a body until they've absorbed more punishment that they typically should with 12 or so klaw attacks imbedded in the unit? Depending on your answer to that question, you would either go with meganobz for the former, or nobz for the latter. Or you could go with none of the above if high point cost units isn't your thing, and that's a completely viable option given the ridiculous tasty goodness of the standard 6 point ork.
