Re:Mad Dok Grotsnik footslogging

Posted this on another thread a while ago:

My awesome self, in the past like wrote:Just did the math - 30 'ard boyz with Grotsnik sets you back a hefty 460 pts without a PK nob (since Grotsnik has a PK already). Too expensive at 1500 pts IMO.

I rarely play games above 1500 pts, so I can only say how it looks on paper.

What you get: 30 boyz with a PK, 4+ save and FNP. Just for the boyz that's a 30 wound sponge that will ignore 1/4 of all bolter wounds, 1/2 of all heavy bolter wounds and none of all plasma cannon wounds. This unit will be notoriously difficult to kill. It will charge towards the nearest enemy, but since it's a screen that's what you want. However, a clever opponent could use a cheap land speeder or somesuch to divert it, advance with caution.

The problem for me is that I could just as well get a fullsize grot mob to do the same job for a fraction of the cost. At 1500 pts your ard boy screen will amount to a third of your army. Not so much with the grots!

Re:Mad Dok Grotsnik footslogging

I find grotsnik and a 30-man mob of boyz works very well at any points level I've played at for a footslogging army. I don't usually bother making them 'ard boyz or cyborks but at 1500 it's certainly doable. My recommendation is cybork unless you've got a KFF near them or other way of getting them a cover save because the 5+ invuln is much more helpful since it protects them from power weapons, battlecannons, plasma, and all that good stuff by negating 33% of it and only turns aside 8% fewer normal wounds than 'eavy armour. I run mine behind a kan screen at that point level to give them a 4+ cover save for a round or two, obviating the need for extra protection for the most part. Grot screens work too. Using grotsnik's mob as a screen isn't really a tactic I'm fond of. They're a big bad scary assault unit and will be getting shot at anyway. You want others to protect them so they can dominate your opponent's army, not the other way around.

As far as if you have enough boots on the ground, that entirely depends on what the rest of your army looks like. I can tell you that my 750 and 1000 point grotsnik lists have 60 boyz each, so not having 90 seems a bit low at 1500. Especially given that grotsnik's mob can't really capture objectives you want at least 2 free troops choices for that purpose.

I have heard some people talk about throwing grotsnik in with a gretchin mob, but that's a fantastically bad idea. Grots are toughness 2 and so almost everything in the game will ignore their FNP due to being double their toughness. Even marines instant death them with their basic ranged and melee attacks for crying out loud.

When I said I'd rather use grots I wasn't thinking with Grotsnik (though his name kinda implies it)!

Culler wrote:Using grotsnik's mob as a screen isn't really a tactic I'm fond of. If I were IG, looking at two regular fullsize mob and a Grotsnik 'ard boy mob side by side, I would actually pour all regular anti-infantry fire into the regulars and at best use the high strength stuff on the 'ard boyz. More kill points, better chance at having you struggle to grab objectives. Yes, Grotsnik would eat me in melee, but so would each of the other mobs!

Mad Dok Grotsnik footslogging

I've seen Grotsnik squads used quite well, but like everything, that can be the player, not necessarily the unit.

I would be inclined to use a grot screen or KFF instead of cyborking. 5 pts per guy to cybork (150 for unit) gets pretty expensive for minimal return, especially if you're already at 300 points (ard boyz) plus 180 for Doc. 4+ save/4+ FNP/4+ cover save (grot screen) would more than enough to get them to krumpin' fairly intact. You aren't going to be hit with too many 8+ STR, AP1/2 weapons and if you are, well, they're not shooting at all your other stuff.

If you run this unit, the rest of your army should be on the cheap. Shoota boyz work well in footsloggin' armies, but you're going to have the persistent problem of handling tanks.

If you search for footsloggin' lists here, you'll find some good ideas.

I think the idea was to give the mod cybork bodies instead of 'eavy armor, not in addition to it. It's slightly more expensive, but it ensures that they will pretty much always get a save.

Re:Mad Dok Grotsnik footslogging

At 1500 points leave the 'Ard Boyz at home and just put Grotsnik in a regular mob. There's enough cover saves in the game and with luck you'll be stuck in by turn three.

I once lost a tournament game because Grotsnik and 19 boyz, my only remaining troop choice, had to kill a drop pod--nearest enemy unit--on turn 7 rather than take an objective. Poor mad doc; he hasn't been out of his foam prison since.

Sorry to hear olympia

This list is purely for fun which is why i use mad dok and his ard boyz.
My list roughly is 30 ard boyz with grotsnik
30 shoota boyz
10 grots for objectives
skorcha trakk for contesting (comes from reserve)
deffkopta for 1st turn assault
kommandos
10 lootas
and stormboyz
i have the list already i am not too sure about the trakk/grots though as i think i could use the points on something better (its 90 free points) i have no idea what though.

With only two other troop choices (one of them being grotsnik's mob) I'd keep the grots to come on from reserve and hold an objective in/near your deployment zone. If you drop the wartrakk you could add a second kopta.

the trakk is only 40 points though. wait how much is the rokkit add on? Isn't it 10 points? That is 45 points so ill be 5 short of a kopta with rokkits if i replace the trakk. Ill look into it though. Generally all my auxiliary units are for tank busting and early/random pressure on the opponent.
