Dark Elves Anti-Magic (hero setup)

I'm a relatively new Fantasy player (started in January) and have been playing Dark Elves in a small-point (1000 generally) campaign at my local store. I've lost more games than I've won, but most of the people Im playing against have years more experience than me. I feel like Ive done pretty well though, because almost all of my losses have been VERY close games, and my wins tend to be massacres.

I have been learning some stuff though, and one thing I have been learning is that enemy magic can be a pain. I lost to an Ogres list, believe it or not, because he had two casters who were tearing me up with spells (and I somehow manage to fail tons of ld8-9 panic tests, but thats another story).

The list I have been running looks pretty much like this:

1xMaster on Cold One, Sword of Battle, Pendant of Khaelth
1xLev2 Sorceress, Tome of Furion or Darkstar Cloak
1x Assassin, Rune of Khaine, Manbane

20x Spearmen w/Shields, Full Command

2x10 RxB Warriors w/ Shields

5x Cold One Knights, no frills.

Since my last game (which was 2 weeks ago, skipped a week due to busyness) I've bought a Hydra, finished assembling/converting a unit of 5 Dark Riders, got another on-foot Dreadlord, and ordered enough Black Guard to make a unit of 14 w/Full Command. I also have one (1) Reaper Bolt Thrower.

Using these resources, what do you think would be the best configuration for my heros? This is a 1000 point game, by and large, mind. I'm building my list towards higher points, but for the campaign it has to be around 1000. Basically, I think I need to be able to deal with magic better. I realize from reading some other threads that I may have made a mistake in taking a single sorceress but trying to make her offensive. Would I be better served by just giving her 2 dispel scrolls or a scroll and the Ring of Hotek, and having her hide the whole game behind my archers?

Also, do you think it would be a good idea to take out one unit of crowssbowmen and replace them with the 5 Dark Riders w/ crossbows? Its the same cost.

What about my Master? Right now I have the Cold One Master with the CoK. Is that ideal, or would using my on-foot Master with the spearmen be a better choice?

Thanks for any advice!

Re:Dark Elves Anti-Magic (hero setup)

From what I understand, magic in low-points games is pretty underwhelming. And DE Sorceresses, while nice, are rarely strong enough to go on the offensice solo (unless the other side totally ignored magic defense). One socreress alone is best used as a scroll caddy... and give someone the Ring of Hotek to help control magic.

To be really evil, put the Ring on a Master on a Dark Pegasus, and send him wizard-hunting...

Two sorceresses at this point level can become quite potent offensively, especially if you boost your magic dice with items. Between that and Power of Darkness (and the Druchii Sorcery special rule) you should be able to power through most other armies antimagic.

But Dark Elf magic really comes into its own at the 2000 point level when you can get the Supreme Sorceress...

Ring of hotek on a character in the middle of the DE battle line really hurts opposition magic.

Also kudos to you for having a relatively well rounded DE list. They do lend themselves to an all or nothing approach, usually with 40+ repeater x-bows from different sources, 2 hydras and ASF banner on the black guard.

Re:Dark Elves Anti-Magic (hero setup)

Well ring of hotek doesn't really do that great a job at 1k. Most people will be casting 1 and 2 dice spells at that points value, so the chances that it ends up being useful isn't that good. Not until you get to 3 dice spells does the ring become really scary.

As for low point value game magic defense: I usually just take a master with seal of ghrond, and maybe give a key unit a null stone somehow.

Also part of the reason why your 1k list hasn't been winning much is that you don't really have anything scary in the list. Crossbow warriors are a decent attrition force, but at 1k you need them to do more than what they can. Also don't bother with shields. It isn't that useful to make a unit than can't win combat more expensive. I usually put dark riders in a list, and only put rxb warriors when I have left over points.

As for the master: I think since you have the assassin in the warriors, that mounted is better. But I would give him some different items. Sword of battle isn't that good, cold one mounted units have plenty of S4 attacks, you want the S6 ones. Give him a normal lance, full mundane, and maybe the pendant or seal.

Thanks for the advice.

So Notabot, you'd recommend taking out the ring and just giving the sorceress 2 scrolls?

I only have enough models to field one unit of 5 dark riders, but I will def do that instead of one of the RxB warrior units.

As for not having any really scary units, what would you recommend at 1000? I have available a bolt thrower, a hydra, and soon (before this weekend) 15 Black Guard (inc Full Command). What would you take out to fit something scary in?

Re:Dark Elves Anti-Magic (hero setup)

At 1k a Hydra is very, very scary for most armies. Some armies (particularly Skaven) can knock it out without too much issue with their own Rares, but there are often things you can do to mitigate these threats. The nice thing is that it's only 175pts so you still have plenty of points to put elsewhere.

I wouldn't bother with Black Guard until 1500. They are typically run as 7x2 with ASF, which is 200+ points.
