Need some help with my Tau

Hey.

I want to paint my Tau, and i wat to paint them in their Ta'u scheme (vermin brown and vomit brown). I'm using GW paints because it's the colour of their vomit brown I really like. The problem is, it's so damn hard to use that paint. I have to paint so many layers and every time i've painted a new layer, i have to add some water to the mini so the paint wont look ugly, and yes, I do add some water before I paint the layer. I've spent 3 hours, maybe more, to paint 1/3 of one of my battle suits, and that is without high light.
I've got big trouble even to paint the larger areas(sp?) of the suit, so I have no idea how to paint my tanks.
I have been thinking about another colour scheme where I can use some colours that is very easy to paint with, but I'm really hooked up with the vomit brown.
I really want to have a nice painted army.
What do I do?

First of all, do you spray a base coat, and if so, what colour? If not, Why not?

Second, try Foundation paints (also GW.) Use a Foundation brown over your (fully dry) basecoat. Then once dry, go over it with your vermin and vomit.

This should limit you to 3 layers of painting to do.

You might try undercoating with white instead of black. Many colors just don't cover black undercoats well.

My tau are a dark green/ black camo

I use white basecoat and then dark green over it.

I found that I was having to use many thin coats of the green (not GW) until i started using the orkhide foundation. Once that is dry I then paint over with my original green (a subtly different colour) using a semi-dry brush and hey presto! it is done!

I reckon I am saving half the time per model.

I use grey primer on most things.

If you are having trouble with coverage, after priming, spray the models a matt colour which is near the colour you want. There are lots of good acrylic sprays used by commercial and graffitti artists.

When thinning already thinned paints like Citadel, add a bit of acrylic polymer to the paint. If you add too much water the paint loses its structure and will not dry to a proper skin.
