1850 SW comp list

Ok so here it is this is a twist from my other lists a little different then what i normally run this is mostly focused on killing up close and personal. Its mech so i should be able to reach enemies lines pretty fast and mostly intact with Smoke and such but i got to thinking about how great grey hunters really are in cc so i decided to make a list around them. Im gonna test this list out tonight see how it goes playing chaos (and probably his 9 Oblits). This is basicly a rhino rush list with pretty good range support. So here it is C&C is much appreciated. I almost took some banners but then went against it my next list variation will be with banners (Dont know were ill get the pts from but ill get them).

Space Wolves

HQ: 210
Rune priest: 110
CotS
(Living Lighting, Murderous Hurricane)
(with Pack 1)

Rune Priest: 100
(Living Lighting, Jotww)
(With Pack 5)

Troops: 730
8 GreyHunters: 175 (Pack 1)
Melta Gun, Rhino, MotW

9 GreyHunters: 190 (Pack 2)
Melta Gun, Rhino, MotW

9 GreyHunters: 190 (Pack 3)
Melta Gun, Rhino, MotW

8 GreyHunters: 175 (Pack 4)
Melta Gun, Rhino, MotW

Elites: 499
4 WolfGuard: 172
4 TH's
(with Pack’s 1 though 4)

10 WolfGuard: 327
Rhino, 4 TH‘s, 4 Storm bolters

Fast: 180
Typhoon land speeders: 90
Hvy Bolter, Typhoon ML

Typhoon land speeders: 90
Hvy Bolter, Typhoon ML

Hvy: 230
Vindicator: 115

Vindicator: 115

Total: 1849

Give all of the wolf guard combi-meltas so you're not stuck with one meltagun shot on a tank.

Also, you have no true strong hitting unit. A unit of five Wolf Guard dropping in or inside a land raider will be what does the real damage.

Re:1850 SW comp list

2 Points about this list:

1) Predators really don't seem to be where it's at when it comes to Space Wolves. The fact that 4 Long Fangs armed with Missile Launchers is 115 points is enough for me to say take two squads of those to replace your predators. This gives you the ability to effectively put 4 wounds per turn on big nasties such as Monstrous creatures and put the hurt on vehicles as well. Also, you don't really sacrifice anti personnel either as you could shoot 4 frag missiles instead.

2) I personally would prefer full packs of 10 than packs of nine. That free special weapon can mean the difference between a destroyed result and an immobilized result. I would drop down the Wolf Guard to 3 with Power Fists, attaching one each to squads 1,3 and 5. make pack 2 and 4 10 men with double meltas and be a happy puppy. This leaves you with 81 points left over. So you could tool out your Rune Priests or your Wolf Guard as you don't have any heavy hitting close combat.

Just my 2 cents.

Re:1850 SW comp list

@ tokugawa, As to the shooting Grey Hunters i was thinking of doing that but then i went with a full WG (PF's) in all squads mainly over the ability to just close as i have so much on the field my firing lanes are normally small so they will end up just giving my opponents cover saves. As to the Dread he always lives i have yet to see him die (although hes only been in 4 games and 2 Rifleman dread are 125 pts a pop so 250 is costly as my RP's using LL alot make up for it a bit) i present more pressing targets such as the pred decked with lascannons or the vindicator which everyone fears so much. Plus one less anti-vech unit to shoot at the rhinos if they fire at the dread. I try to avoid rhinos as they are usually equipped with melta's and will knock him out pretty fast against MEQ's i usually drop him on the side a distance away from the rhinos most people ignore him.

@ Lorgar's_Blessed, Yea on paper each of these units look well kinda average but in it all they are great each unit with a ld of 9 more then likely will get the CA ld check passed. so in the first round of cc ill get 3 PF's, D6+2 rending attacks, and 21 normal attacks. It may look wack and i know had i not seen this unit break a Zerker unit i would doubt it to. About 2 days ago i fought a Khorne army list and i had a single one of these units and true i charged the zerks but i never the less broke them in a single phase. And just tonight i killed 5 MoT termies in a single phase they may not be hammers but they do pretty well all the attacks do more then the PF's and MotW. Although the combi-melta does sound good. Now i was thinking of dropping the dakka pred or Drop Dread to upgrade one of the GH's into a full WG unit of death.

@ As to the LF's i only have 4 ML's and i was thinking of doing that i just like the look of the preds ill probably do that in the tourney as the predators didnt do much but die and miss alot of shots. Yea as i said before on the squads i really like them like this, now true they dont have massive anti-tank ability but the dread and pred make up for the 4 lost meltas and most of the times they arent even with in 6' so its up in the air anyhow but the ML's i like alot. I may have to replace the pred for a LF pack with ML's. But this squad set up really is great if you can close on your enemy in cc its tougher then it looks i assure you packs a punch. But i still am tempted to take a WG with alot of cc extras. Just shocked me for the pt cost how much the unit could do.

The main weakness i see is all the KP's i give so many KP's that aren't that hard to take.

Some thoughts:

Maybe swap out Living Lighting for JotWW on the first Rune Priest?

A Lascannon Pred is really pricy. You could downgrade it to a dakka pred (2x Hvy Bolters + Autocannon) and give your Wolf Guard a Razorback with a TL Lascannon, and still have 5 points to spare.

I agree that the Dread probably doesn't quite do enough on its own for its cost.

Also keep in mind that you can pay 3 points less and not lead some squads with Wolf Guard + powerfists, and instead give a PF to one model in the squad, and if that gets them up to 10 models, you get a free special weapon as well.

I will support the sentiment about the Long Fangs with missile launchers - then again, I run 15 of them in my list.

Ok so i edited the list looks alot different i still like my set up for the troops i just think its to effective in cc i would rather have that then one more melta. But im trying to keep my list mobile and i really dont want to use LF's i hate static units.

And as to giving my GH a pf i just see it as for 3 more pts i get ld 9 (for CA checks) and another attack i think its worth it.

1850 SW comp list

It looks OK IMHO, admittedly I'm all for running 10-man Grey Hunter squads rather than get Wolf Guards or what-not in there, but I get the impression that's not something you plan to change! After-all, you get another melta, MotW and a Standard is very capable counter-assault, I mean, the generally use with Grey Hunters is to ride up, shoot the bigjesus out of whatever then finish them off, often through them assaulting you... It's just my opinion, but I can see the CC advantages in your set-up, which I imagine you're reluctant to change!

I personally dislike your ten-man Wolf Guard squad, in my opinion they should have combi-weapons instead of storm bolters. These are only slightly more costly but are much more effective, whilst 4 thunderhammers may be a bit overkill and hell, you may aswell put a MotW in there!

However, I think you should simply swap this 10-man Wolf Guard squad for something that acts as an almost ace up your sleeve, such as thunderwolves, a landraider or just simply get some supporting fire (dreads etc.) 330pts can be put to MUCH better use IMHO.

Finally, although this is just a personal opinion, and I've never used them - for the reason im about to give - I dislike Land Speeder Typhoons as I'm reluctant to spend 90pts on something so fragile. As I said though, that's more personal preference...

Anyway, mainly I'd reconsider that 10-man Wolf Guard unit. Good Luck!

That WG unit is meant to wreck everything i think its a real strength for the SW's having a unit with a insane amount of attacks. As i dislike termies cost to much for to little but i can easily take the speeders away and put my 10 man wg or 5 termies in the LR and this would reduce my kill points. maybe this would be better?
