"Green Stuff" seems to be an industry stantard that many professional sculptors prefer. I've also seen "Grey Stuff" that I'd like to try as I think my eyes would better see the shadows on that than on the green.

If you are just starting out, you could always use a less expensive putty but you do run the risk of developing bad habits trying to get that stuff to work for you versus the way Green Stuff does.
