Broadside Bash Indy GT; Battle Report

OK, so a friend at work did me a HUGE favor for picking up my shifts that I was scheduled over this weekend, thus freeing up my time to go the Broadside Bash this year! YEAHHHHH!!!!!!

Just got back from the Broadside Bash, and I'm tired, thirsty, but quite pumped! I'll post up a blow-by-blow Battle Rep later for everyone, just wanted to get this stuff posted up.

The SoCal GW League again represented itself and the hobby very well this weekend, and had a number of great wins!

Firslty HUGE congratz to Mike Mandzark for winning the Overall in Fantasy with Ogre Kingdoms!!!!

Congratz to Ken Krogman for winning the "prestigious" Last Place Award, and taking it all in stride!

I won Best General, and thus the Dark General still marches upon the lands of mortals!!! BWAH-HA-HA-HA!!!!

I believe on the 40K side, Toby Walker won both Best Appearance, and 2nd Overall so he gets his seat confirmed for the 2011 Las Vegas GT Tournarment of Champions!

Also, congratz to Anthony Florez for taking home Best Sportsmanship on the 40K!!!

A good Tournament, decent turn out, but 40K had about 10+ more players then Fantasy. Still though, the Fantasy side was stacked with great players!!!

Here's my list...

1x Herald Khorne
*General, Juggernaut, Armor of Khorne

1x Herald Nurgle
*BSB, Great Standard of Sundering, Noxious Vapours

7x Chaos Furies

8x Chaos Furies

16x Bloodletters Khorne
*FC, Skull Totem

16x Bloodletters Khorne
*Champ, Standard, Icon of Endless War

21x Plaguebearers Nurgle
*FC, Standard of Seeping Decay

3x Nurlgings Swarm

8x Flesh Hounds Khorne

3x Beasts Nurgle

3x Bloodcrushers Khorne

TOTAL POINTS: 2,250
TOTAL MODELS: 87
Power Dice: 2
Dispel Dice: 2

Now, the tourney was pre-judged comp for initial pairings...which turned out to be your first 3 games! Scoring went from 0 to 6, and there were 2 judges. This list got a '6' total, getting a '4' from one judge, and a '2' from another. I don't quite agree with the '2' score, but the San Diego group does hate Daemons more then any other army so it is what it is.

This Tourney also featured the first "official" Hunt for the Dark General, and as such, GMI Games offered up a bounty upon my head! LOL! The player whom slayed the most amount of my models during the Tourney would recieve a boxed set of 5 Orc Boar Boy Riders!

Re:Broadside Bash Indy GT; Battle Report

 Funny, how the hatred of Daemon Armies is still soooo strong! Comparatively to the "norm" tournament Daemon list, my list is very tame with no Magic, no Shooting, no Greater Daemon, only 2 Heralds, and each only have 1 25pt/15pt Daemonic Gift.

Ok then...

GAME #1:

Scenario~Grudge Match
vs. Glen Jukes (Wood Elves)

I'm sooooo glad game one was against Glen! This guy epitomizes what's good about our hobby! Friendly, easy going, sense of humor, and love for the game! So while we're doing out introductions to each other, read the scenario, and determine Terrain and it's placement, I'm scouring the gaming area to try to keep an eye on some key games, most notably Table #2 where Steve Masuta was facing off against Clive Henrick (Skaven vs. Skaven)

Glen's List (approx):

1x Wood Elf Prince
*Dragon, Spear w/Killing Blow, 3+ Ward while passes, etc
1x Wood Elf Noble
*BSB, Hail of Doom Arrow, ?
1x Wood Elf Noble
*Kindred?, Stag, ?

10x Glade Guard
9x Dryads
*Champ
9x Dryads

5x Wild Riders of Kurnous
*FC, Warbanner
19x Eternal Guard
*FC, ?

1x Treeman
1x Treeman

TURN 1: Glen wins the dice off for the first turn, and moves his Army up, not quite fulling marching up. Wild Riders w/Stag Hero coming around my far Left, Dragon lord hanging out in the middle, Eternal Guard w/BSB to my right-middle, double Treemen on either side of Eternal Guard, Dryads on outside of Treemen.

I move my General w/Bloodletters on Hill to my left facing his general. Nurglings move around in scouted Woods, threatening the Dryads or Wild Riders w/Stag Hero approaching. Bloodcrushers come around the right, Beasts of Nurgle in between my General and the Nurglings, Plaguebearers march towards Eternal Guard, Flesh Hounds skirt inside of the Bloodcrushers. Furies bounce around here and there behind my lines.

TURN 2: Glen charges his Dragon Lord at my general's unit (scenario gives him Hatred!), while rest of his army advances trying to create angles. He's short with the charge, parks right in front of me. Hail of Doom Arrow takes out 7 Bloodletters in my general's unit however...damn.

I charge my general's unit at his Dragon Lord, Flesh Hounds hit Treeman 2, Plaguebearers hit Treeman 1, Nurglings take the Flank of his Wild Riders w/Stag Hero. Bloodcrushers hit Dryads 2, while Beasts of Nurgle manuvere around, purposely exposing their Rear to Dryads 1. Furies bounce around again, hoping to find something they can add Combat Rest to later.
His Stag Hero is on the flank side I charged w/Nurglings, so I direct all 9 attacks at the Stag in hopes of killing it off, and thus reducing the unit's total move by a lot, unless he pulls the character out of it (and thus make the unit not as potent). I of course only manage 2 poisoned wounds on the Stag, and he in turn does a few wounds back. My general is in range for Instability check, but doesn't matter I roll an '11' and pop the Nurglings! Damn! Bloodcrushers wipe out most of the Dryads 2 and break them, Overruning into the right Flank of his Treeman 2 fighting my doggies! Flesh Hounds put 2 wounds on Treeman, Bloodcrushers inflict 2 as well, he does 1 back, but passes Stubborn test w/BSB re-roll. Plaguebearers and BSB manage to put 2 wounds on Treeman 1, he does 1 wound to my BSB, and passes his Stubborn Test. Big general fight, I issue a challenge with my unit champ, and manage 1 Killing Blow on his general, only to find out he has 3+ Ward as long as he keeps passing...kills off my Champ badly, I loose combat by 1, and loose a couple more Bloodletters to Instability.

TURN 3: Glen is having fun, and we're both laughing at how poorly my dice rolls are starting to go...Dryads 1 take bait and hit Rear of my Beasts of Nurgle. He advances Wilder Riders w/Stag Hero around to face my general's unit's Left flank. His Eternal Guard move up, daring my Bloodletters w/Skull Totem to charge. Combat begins, my BSB and his unit do another 2 wounds to his Treeman 1, but the damn Treeman kills my BSB! UGH!!! it passes it's Stubborn test. My Flesh Hounds and Bloodcrushers only put 1 more wound on Treeman 2, it kills 1 dog, and passes Stubborn Test. I've got to get rid of that BSB because he's used the re-roll twice now! His Dryads 1 do no wounds against my Beasts of Nurgle, and in turn loose the champ and 4 other models, but manage to stick! I decide to not Turn and Face his Dryads, since the Beasts dont't have a Rear and they were facing the Left Flank of his Eternal Guard. His general fights my in a challenge, I hit him with a Killing Blow, but he passes his Ward Save and does a couple of wounds to me, but I pass Armor Saves, he passes Break test.

My turn 3, I'm getting desperate, so I throw my 8 man unit of Furies at the oncoming Wild Riders, maximizing 4 Furies on his Stag Hero, and the 7 man unit on his Dragon Lord's right Flank. I need Combat Res! Bloodletters w/Skulltotem charge front of his Eternal Guard, he holds becasue he doesn't want to risk getting out of range of BSB for the badly wounded Treemen. Beasts of Nurgle wiff, as do his Dryads, they stick. Bloodletters unit champ kills of his unit champ, the 2 attacks at his BSB both hit, but both fail to wound! (double '1s') His unit does quite a few wounds back (8!) and I roll boxcars (double '6s') for Instability! My unit pops and goes away...DAMN!!!! Flesh Hounds and Bloodcrushers do a couple of wounds to his Treeman, but he passes all his Armor Saves, and then kills 1 more dog! Combat a Draw now...my furies against his Wild Riders w/Stag Hero all wiff! I get 1 hit against the Stag, needing a 4+ to wound it and be rid of it, but of course I roll a '3'...he then wipes out all the Furies! Uh oh...Plaguebearers put another wound on the Treeman, but re-rolled Stubborn test keeps him around. General vs General challenge, we again both fail to inflict wounds on each other. He passes break tesst.

TURN 4: Glen is now like a happy shark in water smelling blood! It's my first game of the Tourney, and the Hunt of for the Dark General may end here, on game #1!!! He manuveres his Wild Riders w/Stag Hero to face the Left flank of my 3 Bloodletters. His general kills off 2 Bloodletters, I have 1 remaining who again inflicts a single wound to his general. I loose combat but roll well enough to hold (good ol' standard bearer!). My Bloodcrushers and Flesh Hounds finally take the last wound of Treeman 2!!! Plaguebearers remain locked in combat with Treeman 1. My Beasts of Nurgle kill of couple more Dryads and break them, pursuing into flank of his Wild Riders w/Stag Hero (hitting the Stag Hero!). His general kills off my last Bloodletter.

Damn, this game is really going down the drain for me fast! I've lost both my Heralds (380pts), both units of Furies (180 pts), both Bloodletter units (488 pts), the Nurglings (105pts) and he had a general kill (100 pts) and still 2 of my standards (200 pts)...so he had 1,400+...not good!
I send my Bloodcrushers to the Flank of his Eternal Guard (touching his BSB), and the remaining 6 Flesh Hounds to their front. Plaguebearers still stuck in combat with unmoving Treeman 1! Bloodcrushers kill off BSB, and 3 Eternal Guard, Flesh Hounds kill 5 more models. He does 1 wound to Bloodcrushers, and 1 to Flesh Hounds. I win, Fear, he fails Insane Courage, and I run him down! Beasts of Nurgle wiff against his damn Stag!!! That thing is like the BANE of my Daemon Army! He does no wounds back, but still wins combat, I take 2 wounds from Instability. He turns to face me now...

TURN 5: Glen is having a ton of fun, and decides to go for it! He plops his wounded Dragon Lord over behind my Flesh Hounds and Bloodcrushers...Plaguebearers finally break the Treeman 1 and run it down, ending up towards his Dragon Lord and my Flesh Hounds/Bloodcrushers! His Wild Riders do 1 more wound to my Beasts of Nurgle, but I still have the 3 bases, and do 6 wounds back...he fails 3 saves in total, I loose combat but pass Instability.

Ok, I have to go for it! Flesh Hounds hit his Gladeguard who were shooting at them last turn, wipe most of them out, and run off the board in pursuit! (saves them from being charged by his Dragon Lord next turn, as they captured Eternal Guard banner) Bloodcrushers turn to face his on coming Dragon Lord (and to tempt him to charge them. Plaguebearers march up to set up a counter charge onto a flank if his Dragon Lord decides to go for broke. Beasts of Nurgle kill of Stag, and 1 more Wild Rider, win Combat and break them! Because there's now Stag, the Hero and Standard have to Flee 2d6" which allows my Beasts to catch them!

TURN 6: Glen smiles at me, and tells me he came her to fight! His army wasn't fully painted, so he had no illusions of grandeurism for winning the tourney or much of anything, but "stopping the Dark General" will mean something! LOL! He charges front of my Bloodcrushers! His general inflicts 2 wounds, I save both, and his dragon does just 1 killing off the wound 'crusher. I swing back at his Dragon, do 2 wounds! I loose combat, but pass Instability with 1 wound left on 1 Bloodcrusher!!!!

I counter charge his Left Flank with my Plaguebearers, issue a challenge with my unit champ, he's forced to accept! My Plaguebearer unit champ then gets 1 poisoned hit against his general, he finally dies! Dragon passes Monster Reaction, fights back, kills my champ (barely), and I win Combat by a lot! Dragon needs a '3' or less to hold, and Glen rolls Insane Courage!!! ARGH!!!! LMAO!!!! Dragon holds on, last model in his Army!

So I was able to wrestle victory out of the jaws of sure defeat, while having a blast of a game! Glen is great people! I pick up a Major win, but no Bonus Battle Points. So 15 for me, 8 for Glen. At game's end, he had managed to kill off 58 of my Daemons! Since I had to keep track for the "Hunt of the Dark General" award, I proudly told him he'd probably win it, since it's rare that I loose so many models in a game! He was quite happy to hear this!

Re:Broadside Bash Indy GT; Battle Report

GAME #2:

Scenario~Raise the Flag

vs. Brian Hornbeck (Empire)

Brian was a very relaxed, and easy going player. We chatted a bit about the crumby hotel (Raddison) and our fun first round opponents. He faced my buddy Chris Clarke (Skaven) in his first game, and soundly defeated Chris. So, we were up to duke it out!

From memory, here was his list...

1x Knights Templar Grand Master
*Barded Steed, Sword of Sigismund, Laurels of Victory,?
1x Warrior Priest
*Great Weapon, ?
1x Battle Wizard
*Lvl 2, Light, 2x Scrolls
1x Battle Wizard
*Lvl 2, Light, 2x Scrolls

15x Flaggelants w/Champ
10x Huntsmen
20x Spearmen
*FC
*6x Crossbow detachment
20x Swordsmen
*FC
*6x Crossbow detachment

5x Pistoliers
*Champ, Musician
5x Pistoliers
*Champ, Musician
20x Great Swords
*FC, ?
6x Knights Inner Cirlce
*FC, WarBanner

1x Hellblaster Volleygun
1x Steam Tank

I was quite relieved to not be facing the norm "Popemobile" and double "S-Tank" army! And Brian was happy to not see a Greater Daemon, or Flamers or lots o' magic!

So we dice off, and he gets the first Turn, but allows me to go first, since most if not all his Army is out of range...

TURN 1: I quickly pull Nurglings out of Woods on my left, to threaten/march block both Pistoliers but stay out of the Steam Tanks LOS! Bloodletters w/Icon Endless War march up facing the Steam Tank along w/Herald Khorne in the unit. Beasts of Nurgle are supporting their left. Plaguebearers march up the middle as norm, while Bloodletters w/Skull Totem move up and face towards the rightish, because I pull up my Flesh Hounds and "threaten" his Knights Templar w/General. Bloodcrushers swoop up and begin to attempt to get around the far right of the Flesh Hounds. Furies screen most of Bloodletters, because T(3) models die quickly to shooting!

Brian declares a charge with his General and Knights Tempalr vs. my Flesh Hounds. Steam Tank generates 5 steam points, and uses 3 to move up 9"...Flaggelants pull up towards Plaguebearers, Pistoliers dance around the Nurglings. Most of his Army just shuffles inwards. Magic doesn't do much, because of my Great Standard of Sundering and his low dice rolling. Shooting has the Hellblaster cap off 2 Furies from the 8 man unit, but jam up and loose the rest of it's shot for this Turn(1) and next (2)! Pistoliers manage to put just 2 wounds on Nurglings, while Huntsmen wiff shooting at them. Steam Tank bounces a cannonball through my general, I pass "Look out sir!" and loose a coulpe of Bloodletters. Combat begins, and his General hits twice, wounds twice, but I pass 1 ward save. Rest of unit manages 1 more wound! So one doggie dies, but I swing back with 5 and kill off 2 Knights! I still loose combat, and take and additional doggie off because of Instability.

TURN 2: So I declare Nurglings charge #1 vs. closest Pistoliers, and 7 man Furies as charge #2 against the Flank of the same unit. He Flees, but fails to get away, and Furies "fly" him down! But now Nurglings hit the 2nd unit of Pistoliers which opt to Hold, Stand & Shoot, but do zero wounds and fail Fear check! (so they'll need '6s' to him me in Close Combat!) Furies now reduced to 6 models charge Hellblaster which holds, passes Fear. Bloodletters w/General charge Steam Tank, I roll a '4' for Icon of Endless War and hit the Tank! Bloodletters w/Skull Totem charge left flank of Templar Knights w/general. I move up the Plaguebearers w/BSB to face the oncoming Flaggelants. Bloodcrushers manuvere up to face Spearmen w/6 Crossbow detachement. Nurglings kill off 3 Pistoliers, take no wounds back, and Brian fails Insane Courage, and I restrain Pursuit. His Pistoliers zoom off back table edge, but causes nearby Huntsmen to make a Panic check and they fail! Almost run off the board...Bloodletters w/Herald Khorne inflict 5 wounds to the Steam Tank! (YEEEEAAAAHHHH!) Bloodletters on left flank of Knights Templar killing blow 1, his general again only inflicts 1 wound, and his Templar Knights do another. Flesh Hounds do zero back. I win Combat, but they hold. Other Furies kill 2 of 3 Hellblaster crew, he fails to hit, and fails Insane Courage. I Pursue to get away from LOS of the Great Swords w/Warrior Priest

Brian's Turn 2 starts up with 3 steam points! Great Swords pass Fear and charge front of my Bloodletters w/Herald Khorne fighting his Steam Tank. Flaggelants Frenzy charge my Plaguebearers. Swordsmen move up to support Flaggelants. Spearmen brace for soon to be coming Bloodcrushers. Magic sees Unbreakable on his Great Swords, and a Miscast via double '3s', which allows me to cast one of my own spells for free...LOL!...ok, Crossbows fire on Bloodcrushers, but I take just 1 wound. Combat begins, and his general again inflicts just 1 wound. Bloodletters and Flesh Hounds drag down 2 more Knights, and no wounds back. He again passes Break Test. Flaggelants Martyr (bad move) and manage to kill 2 Plaguebearers. I kill 4 back, win Combat. Great Swords w/Warrior Priest now, I issue a challenge w/Herald of Khorne, he accepts w/Priest. He does 2 wounds, I pass both Armor Saves. I then inflict Killing Blow once, and the Priest is gone. Bloodletters loose 2 to grind from Steam Tank before that, Champ puts another wound on the Steam Tank! I loose Combat, but pass Instability.

TURN 3: Ok, Bloodcrushers are bold and charge front of Spearmen and thus take a Stand & Shoot from Crossbow Detachment (which wiffs). Beasts of Nurgle come around finally to hit the Flank of the Steam Tank, while I send my Furies into the Flank of one Crossbow, and Rear of the other. Nurglings move towards recently rallied Huntsmen. Beasts of Nurgle do 1 wound to the Steam Tank, Herald of Khorne and Bloodletters manage 1 more. Damn thing still has 3 left! He passes Stubborn test. Bloodcrushers kill off 5 Spearmen, take no wounds back, and they fail Break test and Flee, only to be run down by the big brass behemoths! Furies in Rear of 2nd Crossbows wiff and kill just 1, and loose 1 back. I roll Instability and now I have just 1 left! LOL! Other smaller unit (3 models left) kill 2 Croosbow, and break them running them down! Plaguebearers w/BSB kill 5 more Flaggelants. Flesh Hounds and Bloodletters kill off 2 more Knights, General wounded 1 doggie, but fails his Break test and is run down by the Bloodletters.

Brian is looking grim now, as his only real "punch" unit is gone. He goes for broke, and generates 3 steam points again! Damn...hahahahahha! Plagubearers w/BSB kill off last of Flaggelants. Beasts of Nurgle bounce of hard shell of the Steam Tank, but Bloodletters do 1 more wound, after loosing 2 to grind! Herald of Khorne kills off 4 Great Swords, who again pass Stubborn Test.

TURN 4: Ok, so I send Flesh Hounds into the Front of the Swordsmen, while the Bloodcrushers manuver behind their Rear. Plaguebearers charge front of Great Swords arleady fighting my Bloodletters w/BSB. Bloodletters w/Skull Totem begin to march back towards my table edge for a table quarter. Nurglins still place cat and mouse with Huntsmen. Combat see Flesh Hounds decitmate the Swordsmen, who break from combat and bounce through the Bloodcrushers. Plaguebearers help add weight, ranks, BSB, Unit Strength (Fear) and a few wounds to the Great Swords. Herald of Khorne does 2 more wounds to the Steam Tank. Beasts of Nurgle and Bloodletters bounce off it again. I win combat, Great Swords fail Insane Courage, and are run down by Plaguebearers.

Brian's Turn 4 is pretty much the last of the game, as I finish off the Steam Tank, but concede the fact that I can't get to his damn stealthy Huntsmen!

So we wrap things up, shake hands over a fun and entertainging game! I earn a Massacre and a few extra bonus Battle Points...21 for this game. Brian managed to kill 32 of my Daemons, which is pretty good considering his dice were wishy-washy. But, not enough to top Game #1 by Glen! Time for lunch...

GAME #3:

Scenario~Winds of Magic

vs. Sean Green (Empire)

Strange, I was facing another Empire Army! What I think was more strange however, is that to my left Charlie Addison (Dark Elves) who also won his first two games, was facing Brian Hornbeck (Empire) whom I had just defeated in the previous game...and to my right, another winner versus looser was going on. We approached the Pacific Marauders who were running the event, and they said that was correct, that our first 3 games were pre-determined based upon our pre-judged Comp Scores...now I didn't agree with this, because it caused a lot of mismatches...but, it's their Tourney, so we played on.

Now Sean is a Pac Marauder himself, and a cool guy! We had done some drinking and friendly bantering back and forth the night before (Friday) on what ifs, if either of our 40K or Fantasy Armies every faced off!

Well here we were, Game #3 and we were both 2-0 coming into it! Funny enough, Sean I guess fully expected to loose this game before we even got started, I believe mainly because Empire/Daemons can be a bad match up.

Here was Sean's list from what i can remember....

1x Templar Grand Master
*Barded Steed, Sword of Power, Laurels of Victory, ?
1x Battle Wizard
*Lvl 2, Light, ?
1x Battle Wizard
*Lvl 2, Fire, ?
1x Empire Captain
*Pegasus, Pistol, ???

10x Handgunners
*Hochland Longrifle
10x Handgunners
*Repeater Handgun
20x Spearmen
*FC
*10x Swordsmen Detachment

6x Inner Circle Knights
*FC, Warbanner
20x Great Swords
*FC, ?
*10x Free Militia Detachment?
1x Great Cannon
1x Great Cannon

1x Hellblaster Volley Gun
20x Flaggelants

TURN 1: Well, I get the first turn, and quickly advance my Army up! Bloodcrushers go barelling down towards the Great Cannon on my far right flank, forcing the issue. Furies screen my Bloodletter units, Nurglings advance up faking the fight towards the 2 units of Handgunners to my far left flank. Beasts of Nurgle pull up at a slight angle inwards to my left, daring his General's unit of Knights to charge. Flesh Hounds advanced towards Flaggelants. Plaguebearers moved towards Great Swords.

Sean takes the bait, and charges his General's unit at my Beasts of Nurgle (now exposing his right flank to my Bloodletters w/Skull Totem). His Captain on Pegasus flew over to try and march block some of my units on the left. His army advances some, mostly the Great Swords to help protect the general's unit. Magic sees a Fireball zap my Furies, killing 2 from the 8 man unit. I dispel Burning Gaze, and let the "Immune to Psychology" spell go off (because now he can't flee from my charges!). First cannon fires at my Bloodletters w/Icon of Endless War and Herald of Khorne, hit him, but I pass "Look out sir!". 3 Bloodletters fall...this is familiar! LOL! Other Cannon shot aims at oncoming Bloodcrushers, but bounces just an inch short of them! Handgunners fire on my 7 man unit of Chaos Furies, and kill off 1. Hellblaster Volley Gun unloads on the same Furies, but kills just a couple. There's only 1 combat...his General hits twice, does 1 wound, I pass ward save. His Knights then inflict 4 wounds but between ward and regeneration, only 1 gets trough. I have a total of 14 attacks back (Nurlge's number doubled!) and inlfict 5 wounds to his Knights. He fails 3 Armor Saves!!!! I win by 1, but he passes break test.

TURN 2: Time to CHARGE!!!! Bloodcrushers charge Great Cannon on far right, Furies (4) charge other Great Cannon, Furies (6) charge Hellblaster Volley Gun, Nurglings charge Captain on Pegasus. General's unit of Bloodletters w/Icon Endless war roll a '5' and hit his Free Militia unit that can't flee! Flesh Hounds charge Swordsmen detachment who flee away but I still hit the Spearmen main unit. Everything else advances to support his possible counter charges. Cpt fails Fear check, and rolls high enough to flee of the board via flying Pegasus! Volley Gun also fails Fear, Furies hit the machine, spike it in Close Combat and then overrun, forcing the crew to flee off the board. Other Furies kill 1 crew on the Cannon, I loose 1 Fury back, but still have Unit Strength (3 now) versus and forces the Insane Courage roll, which he doesn't get. Flesh Hounds wipe out 9 Speramen, and take a wound back, win combat and he fails Insane Courage. Flesh Hounds pursue off the table. Bloodcrushers wipe out other Cannon crew, because of my tactical wield, I overrun towards my leftish/middle. Bloodletters w/Herald of Khorne make short work of Militia, break them, cut them down, and hit the front of his Great Swords. Beasts of Nurgle again hold off his general's unit, killin another 2 knights in the process! He fails break test this time, and Flees a short distance, so the Beasts of Nurgle catch him, and are now facing the left flank of his Great Swords.

Sean of course is very disappointed by his horid dice rolling! I would be too...but he's a great sport and continues to play on! He fires on the Nurglings a bit more, kills off a base. But at this point, the game is pretty much over...my Herald of Khorne challenges (to make it fun) and chops up his Great Sword unit champ, he passes Stubborn test. But the following turn I flank him with the Beasts of Nurlge, and they're mostly wiped out...we call the game over around Turn 4 I believe, so we could have more time for beer!

I pick up another Massacre, and I pick up 2 bonus Battle Points, so I get 20! As I look over, Charlie of course crushed poor Brian (Empire) and now he and I are the only 3-0 players at the Tourney. There were several Draws in games one through three...I figure that he and I will face off for a classic battle of strategy and dice rolling tomorrow morning for Game #4!

Re:Broadside Bash Indy GT; Battle Report

GAME #4:

Scenario~Carnage and Mayhem

vs. Charlie Addison (Dark Elves)

I've met Charlie once prior to the Broadside Bash, at the SoCal GW League barbeque/championships. He has moved out this way, to the West Coast, and has joined the League. There he got a chance to watch me playtest my list against Big Quinten Bohn, whom Charlie had defeated at the '08 GW Baltimore GT on his way to winning the Overall that year. We chatted some on day one of the Broadside Bash back and forth, as most our first 3 games were right next to each other.

We both figured at the end of day 1, since we were both 3-0 and no one else was, we'd face each other today for the first game of day 2...(drum roll.....)

Charlie is a very calm, relaxed and sly sense of humor guy, reminds me a lot of my buddy Stefan Viterstadt who is also bald, and plays Dark Elves (but has moved back to Sweeden). His army was very nice looking! Loved the snow based Dark Elves, and the Ultra-Forge Dragon he used! SWEET!!!

Ok, from memory, here's his list...

1x Dark Elf Dreadlord
*Dark Elf Dragon, Shield, Dragon Cloak, Sword of Might, ?
1x Death Hag
*BSB, Cauldron of Blood, ?
1x Dark Elf Sorceress
*Lvl 1, 2x Scrolls

10x Dark Elf Repeater Crossbows
*Shields
10x Dark Elf Repeater Crossbows
*Shields
24x Dark Elf Warriors
*Standard, Musician, Shields, Spears
7x Harpies
6x Harpies

15x Executioniors of Har Ganeth
*FC, ?
5x Shades
*Grt Wpns
5x Shades
*Grt Wpns

2x Bolt Throwers
1x War Hydra

Well, I definitely knew this was going to be the tactical game of cat and mouse! Lots of fast units, and plenty of shooting to whittle down many of my units to half/wiped out. And since I knew Charlie is a superb player, I was in for a run for my money!!!

TURN 1: As we both had Scouts, we diced off for them, and Charlie won this, placing his in the only real terrain piece that wasn't in a Deployment Zone, which was a Ruins/Woods to my far left hugging the left table edge centered. I then countered them by placing my Nurglings in my Deployment Zone, as close to the Woods/Ruins as possible. I knew if he'd get the first turn, he'd move up and march block my Bloodcrushers and shoot them up quite fiercely! So, if his Shades popped their pointy lil' heads out, the Nurglings would've charged them...his 2nd unit of Shades went in the same spot as the 1st ones, just behind them.

I win the dice off for the first turn, which is probably a HUGE key to this game's outcome. My army is (from Left to Right) Nurglings, Bloodcrushers, Bloodletterw w/Skull Totem, Beasts of Nurgle, Plaguebearers w/BSB, Flesh Hounds w/Herald, Bloodletters w/Icon Endless War. My Furies were stringed along in between several units on both sides.

I quickly advance my army forwards, shifting towards my right with most of it, as the majority of his Army is in the middle/right of me, screening my Bloodcrushers and Bloodletter units from with my Furies.

Charlie decides upon no Charges, and advances just his Dragon Lord up towards my rightish, not really sure where he wanted to go with him. But, since his War Hydra was moving up my right flank, the double rank breaking threat was a good idea. He was now march blocked however with his Shades by my Nurglings, who had entered the Woods/Ruins to begin the cat and mouse game! Magic does nothing, and his shooting begins. First the two units of 10 Repeater Crossbows open up on my 7 model unit of Furies on my left, which were screening the Bloodcrushers. A couple go down. Then his Shades both open up on the same unit of Furies, and they're wiped out! Only 1 Bolt Thrower has LOS because he had accidently placed the 2nd one too far in the Ruins/Woods in his Deployment Zone. I appreciated his honesty of the distance (past 2"), which just shows what a class act Charlie is! And, at this point of the game, Charlie is forthcoming with some of his list, and tells me that his Dragon Lord doesn't have the inverse ward save, and his Army doesn't have the anti-magic item. I thanked him for the info, and he acknowledged that he had a bit of an advantage over me because he saw my Army played just the week or two prior.

TURN 2: Well, I had to get this game rolling fast! I know I can't afford to have a Dragon Lord popping around on me, breathing on my units, and my Furies were easy bolt death for his Army, and wouldn't be around for another turn. So, I use an old trick of mine, and charge my Furies into the front of his Dragon Lord. I offer him the Flee reaction, but remind him that the closest visable skirmisher would force his Dragon Lord to bounce through the nearby Executioners (who'd have to make a Panic Check), then the Cauldron of Blood and possibly off the table. He kinda laughed, and wondered why I had declared the charge, and happily accpeted it. Once the Furies where in position, my general "surfed" over to the Bloodletters w/Icon Endless War, who had just marched up to face the front of the Dragon Lord. Bloodcrushers advanced up towards the two units of Repeater Crossbow men, the Bloodletters w/Skull Totem did the same. Beast of Nurgle and Flesh Hounds were now almost side by side, breathing down the neck of his Spearmen w/Sorceress. Plaguebearers advanced up, to try and get the BSB closer to the Furies who were already now in range of my general's leadership. Nurglings moved up close enough to the 1st unit of Shades to "force the issue"...either charge or be charged, but I stayed out of LOS of the 2nd unit of Shades (can't afford to get charged by two units of of them!). Furies direct thier 4 attacks at the Dragon, and inflict 1 wound! YEAH!!!! Between his Lord and the Dragon, Charlie wiffs some, and only kills 3 Furies! I loose by 3, my general's LD 8 is nearby and I roll an '8', so 3 more Furies get sent back to the Realm of Chaos! But, his Dragon Lord is now pinned down as I had planned, and my general w/Bloodletters w/Icon of Endless War is just perched for a nice charge!

Well, now Charlie realizes why I made the charge with the Furies, and his whole battle plan and Army has to shift to help save his general. The movement phase of both of us for the first couple of turns was quite long, as we were both trying to get the precise angles, distances, and feints in! At this point, he is forced to make some tough decisions, and opts for no charges. War Hydra bounces to my right flank of my Bloodletters w/Herlad. One Harpy unit happily gets in the way of the same unit, to pull them away from his Dragon Lord when I charge. Executioners move up some and angle inwards, knowing that my flank will probably be exposed because of this. His Sorceress pops out of the Spear Elves and attempts to get in the way of the oncoming Beasts of Nurgle and Flesh Hounds. Other Harpy units flys over to march block my Plaguebearers and Bloodletters w/Skull Totem (think he forgot). Shades moved out, taking the risk of the Nurlgings, while both units of Repeater Crossbows backed up. Magic again does nothing. Shades fire on my Bloodcrushers, inlficting 1 wound. Both Repeater Crossbows fire on them, and get 1 more wound through, so 1 Bloodcrusher goes down. (they really do suck) Bolt Throwers and Hydra fire on my Bloodletters w/Herald, killing off the 5 in my back rank.

TURN 3: So, it's time to keep the pressure up on his Army. Nurglings charge 1st Shades who Flee and get away. Beasts of Nurgle and Flesh Hounds charge his Sorceress who attempts to hold, but fails Fear check vs the Beasts, Flees and is caught by them. Now both Beasts of Nurlge and the Flesh Hounds are hitting the front of his awaiting Spear Elves who can't afford to Flee for risk of bouncing off the table sideways. The pass both Fear checks. My Herald of Khorne w/Bloodletters w/Icon of Endless War charge the Harpies which of course Flee, but Charlie rolls low, and I catch them! This takes me out of LOS of his Dragon Lord, and War Hydra, but right by the awaiting Executioners who are poised for the right Flank charge. Ouch...Beasts of Nurgle and Flesh Hounds kill off 7 Spear Elves, they fail to do any wounds back, and fail their Insane Courage roll, and are barely out of range of the BSB w/Cauldron of Blood. They break, Beasts of Nurlge take the standard, and now hit the 1st Bolt Thrower which Flees, my Flesh Hounds stop right before the left Flank of my Bloodletters w/Herald. Bloodcrushers charged the 1st Repeater Crossbows, who opted to Flee, and ran off the Table, which now stuck them in difficult terrain. Bloodletters w/Skull Totem charged 2nd Crossbows, who fled, but stayed on the table. Plaguebearers w/BSB reform to face the Dragon Lord and War Hydra.

Charlie opts for the Ward Save on his Executioners, who pass their Fear check and charge the right Flank of my Herald of Khorne w/Bloodletters w/Icon Endless War (used). No other Charges. 1st Shades Rally. 2nd Repeater Crossbows Rally. War Hydra and Dragon Lord move over to double breathe on my Plaguebearers w/BSB. 2nd Shades move up to shoot at the Bloodcrushers. Shooting puts another wound on my Bloodcrushers. Double Breathe attack on my Plaguebearers kills off 4 models. Combat starts w/Executioners, I declare the Personal Challenge, Charlie wisely declines, his champ cowers in the back. He directs 4 Executioners on my Herald of Khorne, and 1 on my rank and file Bloodletter. He inlifcts 2 wounds (but no Killing Blow) to my Herald, and 1 to my Bloodletter, which passes it's War Save! My Herald of course fails both Armor Saves! UH OH!!! Charlie starts to get excited, while I'm VERY nervous...I fail first Ward Save, and pass the 2nd one! My Herald survives!!!! Between his 5 attacks back the the Bloodletter's 1 attack, I do 6 wounds, Charlie saves just 2, so 4 Executioners go down! We count up the Combat Rez...Charlie has my Flank (+1), had two Ranks (+2), a Banner (+1) and a wound (+1) for a total of 5. I had a Banner (+1), Unit Strength (+1), and 4 wounds (+4), for a total of 6! I actually win the Combat, Charlie shakes his head, and now has to make an Insane Courage test with a Re-Roll! He almost passes both, but it wasn't to be, and my Herald w/Bloodletters happily run down the Executioners, crashing into the Hag BSB w/Cauldron of Blood! Beasts of Nurgle spike the 1st Bolt Thrower and Overrun, now ending up facing the Flank of the Cauldron of Blood...

TURN 4: I send the Flesh Hounds into the 2nd Bolt Thrower which Flees, I then spike it in Close Combat and hold. Bloodletters w/Skull Totem again charge the 2nd Repeater CrossbowElves, who now Flee off the Table. Nurlgings begin to back away from both Shade units, they've done their job. Bloodcrushers begin to wheel and attempt to also get away from the dual Shade units, but the barely get out of the damn difficult Terrain. Plaguebearers again reform up, not exposing the Flanks/Rear to the War Hydra or Dragon Lord. Beasts of Nurlge had charged the left Flank of the Cauldron of Blood, but Charlie being a great player, had set his BSB up on that side...he declares a Personal Challenge (i had no reason to) and I have my unit Champ gladly accept! I only get 1 hit, but that hit is a Killing Blow! Charlie just rolls his eyes, whe both laugh, and he rolls for the 4+ Ward Save, and gets a '3', so the BSB is now dead! Beasts of Nurgle can't fight, as 1 Bloodletter as well. Herald of Khorne, his Juggernaut, and 1 other Bloodletter hack down the 2 Hag Guards.

At this point of the game, Charlie knows the game is lost, so he just attempts to lesson the loss...Dragon Lord heads behind a Hill, Shades move towards the Bloodcrushers, shooting them up, and killing off 1 more model. War Hydra just backs away from Plaguebearers.

TURNS 5 & 6: Neither of us do much, but attempt to gain/save points. I manage to get my Nurglings back into the Woods/Ruins to my far left, but loose the Bloodcrushers to his Shades great round of shooting!

We both laugh, shake hands, and calculate the points...

Charlie had killed 27 of my models towards the "Hunt for the Dark General", and got 473 VPs out of my Army, plus 2 table Quarters. But the Scenario granted him an additional 800 VPs to bring his total to 1,473 VPs! I was a bit worried, but once we counted up my VPs and scenario bonus VPs I ended up with a lil' over 2,550 VPs...so a Solid Victory, and only 15 Battle points...

A GREAT game and I look forward to many re-matches between us!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Lord Solar Plexes: Yeah, well hitting on 3's+ with no re-rolls, and wounding on 3's+ with no re-rolls and only 7 attacks from the Knights isn't a good start. I passed a few Ward Saves and Regenartion rolls for the couple of wounds that did sneak in. Thanks for the props on the Battle Reports, hope ya'll enjoy 'em!

Boss_Salvage: Much thanks bro! Daemons will continue to have a bad rep until the new 8th Edition rules come out...should tone down the uber-cheese feast.

Re:Broadside Bash Indy GT; Battle Report

Hmmm...thought I finished these Battle Reps...guess not!

Ok...

GAME #5:

Scenario~?

vs. Mike Mandzark (Ogre Kingdoms)

Funny, I was back to the first table I played on day 1, game 1...the table that my dice were rollin' like C*&#!!!! LOL!

Mike is a good guy, good player, and when he has the time he can paint and convert with the best of them! His Ogres were converted into a Cyclops tribe that even had some cool 3 pages of fluff behind them! NICE!!!

Our Scenario was the Deploy, then roll a D3 and move that many of your opponents units backwards to touch his back table edge, and those units can't march on Turn 1...it was the exact same scenario when I faced him 2 years ago at the '08 Broadside Bash (Game #4) when it was his High Elves w/Star Dragon vs my Daemonic Legions... ...

Here's his list from what I can remember off hand...

1x Ogre Tyrant
*Tenderizer, Fist Full of Laurels, Wyrdstone Necklace, etc.
1x Ogre Butcher
*Bangstick, ?
1x Ogre Butcher
*?
1x Ogre Butcher
*?

3x Ogre Bulls
*nothing
4x Iron Guts
*FC, War Banner
4x Iron Guts
*Standard, Musician
4x Iron Guts
*Standard, Musician
4x Iron Guts
*Standard, Musician

1x Bull Rhinox Rider
1x Bull Rhinox Rider

So a fairly straight forward list, maxed Butchers, touch Lord, 2 Bull Rhinox Riders (which are under priced) and lots o' Iron Guts!

Game started off with me moving his 2 Bull Rhinox Riders back and he wanted to move my Plaguebearers and Beasts of Nurgle back...but I had tactically screened all my units (except Bloodrushers) with both units of Furies. I had checked with the Tournament Organizer, and he said your opponents can't push other units back by pusing another unit...so I figured I was playing smart, if he wanted to move back units, he'd have to move back the Furies first (who can Fly anyways)...

Mike got a lil' upset by this, and said it seemed a lil' "gamey" and that we're friends and both part of the (SoCal) League so we should just play a fun game...I relented because Mike is cool peeps...this would cost me later.

He gets the first turn, moves up, casts some Gut Magic, and I don't care.

I fly my Furies over to the far Left, so I can see the Flank of one of his Irongut units w/Butcher. I purposely moved them within 1" of his unit, and told him I was staying out of LOS but the felt "tables" and wings of my Furies made it hard to line them up properly. I was also making sure to stay out of 14" charge range of one of his Bull Rhinoxes! Now in hindsight, I should've just waited for my Beasts of Nurgle and Plaguebearers to catch up with my Khorne units, but i was tired and unfocused.

On Mike's Turn 2, he declares a charge with the beforementioned Ironguts w/Butcher on my nearby Furies, but I told him that I thought I was out of LOS...we grabbed an "Arc of Sight" and a sliver of a Fury's base was in view...I was a bit unhappy with this, because I thought it was a friendlier game, and I had told him verably that I was staying out of LOS....but he asked me if it's in, can he charge and I said "whatever"...so the Furies pop, and now my upcoming unit of Bloodletters can't fight them...Nurglings on my turn charge Ogre Bulls who flee off table, as my Bloodcrushers also charged in, he counter charges with another unit of Ironguts w/Butcher, wipe out the Nurlgings and overruns into my Bloodcrushers, rolls hot again, and they get wiped out...

Flesh Hounds fail to wound Ironguts, my general's unit fails to kill a single Irongut in his General's unit, etc, etc....Mike played extremely well, I made a few errors and with his hot dice rolling and my crappy rolling, the game was swinging in his favor!

Now I'm thinkting to myself...here I am at the top table, undefeated, Game #5 and I'm about to loose to Ogre Kingdoms??? LMFAO!!!!

Mike and I have a few rules disputes about LOS, charges and the such. One of his Bull Rhinox Riders has LOS to the right flank of my Beasts of Nurgle, and he has the distance to make the charge, however his nearby Ironguts w/Butcher are close by and doesn't allow his Bull Rhinox to fit. Because my Beasts are pushed up flush against my Bloodletters w/Herald, and just forward of his Ironguts, I can't shift/slide back. Mike wanted to "clip" me, but even the clip would put his Rhinox Rider at a 45' angle to my Beasts...I told him this couldn't happen because all models in Fantasy have to be aligned up flush and at 90' angles at worst. He then wanted to hit my Rear of the Beasts of Nurgle, but I explained if you start in my Flank, you have to charge my Flank...We argued some, couldn't find a rules judge, and Mike relented...

Again, in hindsight I should've just let him slide both my Bloodletters out of the way or my Beasts of Nurgle backwards, as I had Plaguebearers w/BSB bearing down on them...

Later in the game, I get a bit frustrated at my horrid dice rolling and how well Mike was doing, and charge my Herald of Khorne into the right Flank of a Butcher w/Ironguts. Now, I had LOS to the unit, but the Rear of the unit, however I was in his Flank arc, so I had to charge their. Here he argued it was the same situation as his Bull Rhinox Rider, but I showed him that if my model pulled foward, takes a free spin, i was easily able to contact the Butcher and then free align to it's Flank. He said that seemed "gamey" and we got a rules judge who ruled in my favor...

Again, in hindsight I should've just let it go and had my already wounded general pop into the remaining Bloodletters. I had forgotten in the hustle and bustle and intenseness of the game that the Butcher in question was in a Personal Challenge with my Plaguebearer unit Champ! So my Herald was unable to strike anything...my Plaguebearers were surroned on the Flank by a Bull Rhinox, the Rear by Ironguts w/Butcher and to the Front w/Ironguts w/Butcher...and my BSB was dead because Mike was rolling hot (still) and I wasn't...

In the end, the game ends in a Draw, with Mike about 200 VPs ahead of me! NICE JOB!!! I lost 50 Daemon models, which meant that my Game #1 opponent, Glen Jukes would win the "Hunt for the Dark General" award!

Mike doing so well against me helped him win the Overall, which he rightfully deserved! I walked away with Best General and tied for 5th Overall, which I was more then happy with!
