I knew it from playing Battletech and watching the Japanese originals. There used to be tons of model kits in 1/72 scale.

I was not aware of the Brian May version of the Starfleet song, but was interested to read his son was the one to introduce him to the series... as I remember reading in a White Dwarf that his son also got him into warhammer!

Daleks with personalities, Dalek heroes even. Frankly up 'til now Daleks were the wrong sort of joke, I just couldn't see them as a 'credible' threat even within the paradigm of the Dr Who show. Sure they had a killer rep, but couldnt do much and were taken down by meagre opposition. However now having these Daleks, especially Xenol for a neighbour seems like a serious problem for any other civilisation in the region.

As for the souless vs personality theme. I guess that the personality is a recent development and this series is 'post' Dr Who. With no Davros to keep them in line evolution can run its course, and remember that the Golden Emperor has been reconnecting Kaled DNA. Actually I saw the series when the Daleks and Kaleds were having their eternal war, before they became Daleks. (If that makes any sense.)
