Forge World Renegade Psyker [Finished 3/15/10]

I've had a work-in-progress chain of updates running on my painting Blog for a while, but I figgered I'd post a WIP thread on this great sculpt for the sake of getting more feedback - the Forums software was politely pestering me to contribute more, and I'll admit I've been doing more lurking than typing. (There's just so much cool stuff to look at!) I'll skip most of my past description and just post pictures of prior steps up until his current state - please feel free to comment on any of it!

I've been working on this guy, one of the two Renegade Psykers from Forge World that come in a set:

He's mounted on this pre-cast resin base from Secret Weapon Miniatures, which has been slightly tweaked so as to sit offset on a 25mm GW slottabase:

The last set of WIP shots prior to the current update:

It's been a few days since I've actually been able to sit down and work on the Renegade Psyker, but I got a chance to add in some of the details to the base that I had hoped. Feedback would be appreciated:

I highlighted the exploding rubble on the base and deepened the shading in the crevices a bit more. I was aiming for a paint-blistered, scorched metal effect on the scrap of Rhino hatch being flung outwards - I'm curious as to people's opinions of that, and whether I came anywhere close in my attempt. The last piece was somewhat of an inspiration. Feedback elsewhere was that I needed to add some more color to the base without making it stand out awkwardly - I'm hoping this rusty spring fits the bill. I can go back and add a bit more in the way of orange for the rust, but I don't want to overdo it.

I was trying to make the Rhino hatch look like scorched Ultramarine debris - did I get that across, at least?

I love this model. The paintjob is beautiful (especially the green glass eyes), but mostly it is the concept. The way the model is sculpted it cries out for something more than just putting it on a base, and the inclusion of the exploding Earth spreading out, it fits perfectly.

Love the work done, hoping to see more in time

Forge World Renegade Psyker [Finished 3/15/10]

I had some problems when the flat coat that I had brushed on to tone things down after a few touch-ups went slightly hazy, but I managed to fix the problem areas and everything seems to have dried without further complaint. I've played around with the colors on the base and added quite a few alternating layers of highlights and washes - I don't know what else I can do with this particular figure or the basing, so for all intents and purposes I'd say this Renegade Psyker is done. I've got other stuff I'm working on now, so I'm moving on.

I painted this Renegade Psyker figure up as a "color test" of sorts to work out a scheme for my renegade Imperial Guard force based on The Shriven (of "Gaunt's Ghosts" novel fame). I was pretty sure on going with the "surgical green" rubberized gear for the majority of the troops, but it wasn't until right before I started painting this guy that I settled on a secondary color of olive drab (P3's Traitor Green, conveniently enough). The spot color on this guy of the bright blue was inspired by a writeup in White Dwarf of the 'Eavy Metal team hazing a competition of sorts in painting up Wizards from all the different colleges of magic - the darker blue of the Celestial Wizard's robes was a variation of the blue I used on my Chaos Sorceror of Tzeentch. It was a color I was already somewhat familiar with painting, and thought it would balance out the primary green and the heavy reliance on reds used in the rest of the painting. I'm hoping that with the two greenish shades as main army colors, it should let me work in a variety of spot colors as well as different shades of skin.

So what do you think?

@ everyone - Thanks for the compliments! I'm happy the color scheme and the painting seems to go over well - I'm hoping to start working on the second Psyker in this set of two soonish, and I'll likely post updates as I really appreciate any feedback. I don't really know anyone else who paints display pieces, so I sort of rely on painting forums like this for suggestions.

For what it's worth, at the request of the staff at Secret Weapon Miniatures (one of whose Urban Streets II bases I used as the "crumbling street" that he's standing on, prior to adding the flying debris), I took another top-down picture just to show another view of his base:

really nice paintjob!

I think the base would benefit from a bit of color variation, maybe make the dirt sandy or muddy instead of grey? A few warm tones would really bring out the cooler tones you've used with the mini itself and help bring an extra layer of dynamism into the piece.

All imo of course!
