wounds and ogres

this is a question I have asked a friend and he isn't sure of the answer and I can't find it in the FAQ's or the BRB so I ask you this

first a little scenario

3 ogres are charged by knights. in the resulting round of combat before the ogres attack back the knights cause 4 wounds in total, now here is the question

do you

a) remove 1 Ogre and leave one on 1 wound

or

b) have each Ogre take a wound and one take another wound but still have 3 ogres left in combat?

it was something that came to mind a while ago and I can't find any answer in the usual places

That's why some people recommend taking Ogre Champions. In the case of shooting attacks against the unit you would need to randomize the attacks and possibly take a wound or two on your champion (instead of losing an Ogre and then taking a Panic check).
