Pretty dang well, actually. I cheat and use a "Fine Surface Primer" in grey from Tamiya to ensure that no detail is lost and for a better coverage though.

For the reds Army painter do two coloured primers Dragon red or Pure red. Dragon Red is the color of the Mechandrite Red from the Foundation range.
