Priming over old paint jobs?

Was wondering if anyone has had experience of simply priming over old paint jobs, and what the negative consequences are? I'm purchasing a few old mini's today, and they're already painted. I may want to to just prime them so I can get them repainted by Saturday. What does Dakka think?

Primer is designed to let paint hold to the model. Unless you used a gloss varnish, you shouldn't need to reprimer it.

If you are talking about metal figures, strip the paint off, wash the fig, then (once it's dry) prime it fresh.
