I'm using my DA vets that I hadn't painted as SW by switching the arms, shoulder pads and back packs. Then putting their arms and shoulder pads on the SW. Then buying the bikes and assault squads as well as more Sw packs and switching as many arms as I can. So, if you want to do a lot of converting I'd do the basic space marines and not the black reach ones, but if you want cheaper with less detail go black reach. My black reach dreadnought looks great with some DA bits from the upgrade sprue and some details scraped off.
