Ork boyz, Sluggas and choppas vs Shootas

I'd say shootas. You do already have loads and loads of basic melee attacks, and the extra range + shot really helps with tings that it hurts to assault. For example spacewolves in cover when you don't have stikkbombs.

On average: 30 shoota boys = 60 shot = 20 hits = 10 w = ~3 dead wolves. One of these might even be the wolfguard since you force so many saves.

Ork boyz, Sluggas and choppas vs Shootas

Agreed. Green tide should always take shootas. If you have in excess of 3 groups of 30 boyz, you can consider putting choppas in the hands of the 4th or 5th group to make a serious counter assault threat to anyone who drops off assaulters on your shootas. But for the most part, shootas are king when walking.

Be aware that regardless of whether you take shootas or sluggas as green tide, you are at serious risk of being assaulted by mechanized armies. Any army that can assault out of a vehicle (land raiders, open topped, etc...) will be able to drop off and massacre multiple groups at a time if they are strong in CC. While it may seem like the easy way to cover that weakness is by taking sluggas, it's really not, as sluggas are still significantly weaker when they get assaulted than they are when they get the assault. Just set guys up in easy range to shoot + counter assault whatever kills other groups.

Re:Ork boyz, Sluggas and choppas vs Shootas

Shootas definitely. When you're walking it means you can reach out and hurt your enemy a turn or two earlier. Being able to outrange SM on the move also gives them fits, and there plenty of things you'd rather shoot before assaulting, like space wolves.

I'm experimenting with 2 shoota mobs and a slugga mob in my kan wall (sluggas in the middle) to try and get a feel for how effective it will be to have mixed mobs, whereas normally I just went with shootas. Only 1 game so far against an all outflanking army that let the sluggas walk onto their objective uncontested, so I still have no idea how useful they are.

I love these has to be one or the other arguements. It depends on the role you have for your boyz.

I find mid size Shoota Mobs 20-25 very effective.

I tend to run the full 30 though if I am going with Choppa boyz.

Look at what your list is lacking first before you decide which type of boy is right for you.

The way it gets broken down is, Shootas are superior unless the boyz are in a vehicle, then sluggas are superior.

The reason being 2" assault inclusion. 30 boyz that get the charge may not all attack and will rarely shoot at the target for fear of shooting themselves out of assault. However 30 shoota boyz get to fire 60 "attacks" without worrying about going second.

Ork boyz, Sluggas and choppas vs Shootas

The difference is that shootas can actually contribute in small numbers, thanks to being able to move and throw out a volume of fire. Sluggas are nearly useless except in horde form because the combo of crappy initiative and crappy armor usually has them take large losses against anything decent in hand to hand, which is then compounded by fearless wounds that ignore their T4 and exploit crappy 6+ armor. If either sluggas or shootas are charged by anything assault-competent, they are dead, so that doesn't really factor.

Re:Ork boyz, Sluggas and choppas vs Shootas

So here's another question, what would be the preference for Speed Freekz?
I figure Sluggas, since they will be assaulting almost as soon as they jump out, but the possibility of having to drive around and avoid the big nasty units for some armies (like avoiding footslogging termies or a monstrous creature) could mean that shootas will get some gunfire out.

I know the shootas are optimal for slogging it, but when I add the trukk to the mix it confuses me.

Thanks.

In a trukk boyz mob, I would think sluggas are better
Assuming you move the max 12 each round in your trukk, you can't shoot your shootas
So, it comes down to , disembark, shoot, assault
Both units get 5 attacks all up (shooting and assaulting combined), but in the following round of combat, the sluggas would be better off due to more attacks still remaining

At least, I think thats how it would go
I guess if your trukk got blown up, shoota boys would have a bit more of an advantage
