Ultramarines Sternguard

I just finished painting this Sternguard Veteran. I was wondering how I should base him and overall how he was. (Preferably not a raised base. I'm not good at those and especially because he has that metal thing sticking out from under him.)

Lastly, I was wondering if most people have the full array/set of paints from different brands or GW. Or do you just mix paints like I do to get a good tone.

Re:Ultramarines Sternguard

An easy way with GW paint to get a high lighted look is to just dry brush a base coat of your dark color and work up. I have an ultramarine army right now, so I'm versed in painting them and I start with black primer, regal blue, 50/50 regal/ultramarine, ultramarine, and then a very very light enchanted blue. Each dry brushing is progressively lighter. Also, inks are a pretty cheaty way to get the darker depth you're looking for; just use a slightly watered down layer of black ink.

On the white helmet in this picture I used a blue ink to draw in the blue armor. Normally I would use a black ink

As for a quick easy base I use lizard litter. It saves me have to go outside and find the right sand/dirt/pebbles/whatever. Its ground up walnut shells and you can get it at a petco or whatever your local corporate pet store is.

Looks beautiful, I agree it needs a little more to warm the model, but I wouldn't put gold as its a first company marine. Perhaps changing the colour of the aquilas to more of a bleached bone would work?

Nice sternguard.

As for a base, i suggest mixing a little bit of GW's sand, with the small slates from the warhammer 40k basing kit. And then add static grass on top of that.

I think that would look like one of their home planets, i hope this helps.

Good luck.

Kav122: out of all the things someone would suggest to put on a base, that would the most random.
