IG + BFG = Fluff?

I've collected a solid BFG fleet of roughly 2000pts, and I'm having great fun. But I'd also like something from 40k to go along with it. Recently, I've been thinking of an airborne IG army, whose uniform matches that of my ships. (White Fatigues, Dark/Navy Blue armour).

In my mind, they are a specialised strike team used by the navy to achieve set goals and objectives in as fast and efficient a manner as possible. Deploying from their Valkryies, the grenadiers quickly sieze whatever the navy is after and depart after securing it. Rescuing and Recovery missions, seizing vital data/info, assassinations, striking at key points important to the enemy, or even cowling reluctant on-Worlders, and pressuring them into providing the resources needed to run an Imperial Fleet. I was thinking of this force as a sort of alternative to actually calling upon the Imperial Guard for aid. Or at least some sort of the Admirals Personal Guard.

I just wanted to know the fluffy possibilty of such an organisation. I know that since the Horus Heresy the Navy isn't technically supposed to have their own form of Ground Combat Troops. But could this group be considered a loophole, being the Admirals own extended bodyguard? (I know that throughout history, leaders bodyguards have often been the equivalent of an entire army, such as the Praetorian Guard in Rome.)

If you could any comments at all, and hopefully provide feedback, that would be much appreciated.

Navy does have its own armsmen and stormtroopers, mostly for shipboard duties. It's also imaginable that Guard personnel could get semipermanently attached to a Navy command structure in a manner similar to how Navy flyers get attached to the Guard.

Another possible role for such a force is to clear out prospective landing zones for drop ships.

Thanks! (I especially like that last idea) But tell me, what do you think of the idea of an extended bodyguard? (Basically, armsmen with an oath to personally serve the Admiral and carry out his wishes)

Re:IG + BFG = Fluff?

The Imperial Navy doesn't have "ground troops" but will secure landing zones if neccessary.
They keep an amount of armsmen ready to fight in boarding actions and also secure the navy personnel when they land.
Another factor could be the recrutement of navy personnel, where some are volunteers and others are pressed into service.

So you got the "security" and the "pressgang". Both may be the same.

Also the pilots and security of transports and naval fighting wings.

I would go for a viable combo of IG regiment and navy transports. IG has the heavier weaponry and may stand a chance on the ground, whilst navy is restricted in power like arbites.

personal militia/bodyguard sounds good.
@Mr. Burning. Exactly.
Also as Grenadiers I want them to be regarded as touch above the common armsmen.

However, I'm also attracted to the idea of the Personal Guard (I have yet to come up with a proper name) acting as a sort of black ops for the Navy. Carrying out missions of a...shall we say, questionable, nature? Things that carry out the admirals goals...but not necessarily that of the Imperium? (A preposterous notion of course, the Admiral serves only the Emperor )
