Space Marine Vehicle Pilots

I know who pilots Dreadnoughts (mortally wounded space marines). But, who pilots Land Raiders, Predator's, Rhino's, et cetera? Are they simply space marine scouts who were naturals behind the wheel and thus chosen to be tank drivers/gunners instead of becoming space marine infantry? Sorry if the answer is painfully obvious. I haven't found it in my codex.

The reserve companies tend to supply the crew for land speeders and bikes so why not vehicles too. Older codices suggest that there is a pool of space marines who prefer to drive the tanks and who are not part of the 1000 marines that make up the chapter companies.

In any case the drivers etc are full space marines, not scouts.

Perhaps in some chapters the techmarines have a closer relationship with the crews of the machines and this is shown by having the crews incorporating mechanicum symbols in their armour.

Re:Space Marine Vehicle Pilots

None of the Adeptus Mechanicus members speak of being pilots/gunners nor trainers for pilots and gunners (my only source was the Lexicanum). So it puzzles me why they have Adeptus Mechanicus insignia. In my codex it shows that the "Master of the Forge" is basically the "Captain" of the armored division of a space marine army. But it doesn't list anything under him save for Techpriests (who spend their time repairing... not driving) and how many of the different tanks that company has. It doesn't speak of tank commanders or crew of any kind.

Because nothing explains anything I have to assume because there is a Brother-Sergeant character vehicle upgrade (that 1hadhq pointed out) that all vehicles are piloted by full fledged marines and are led by sergeants. However, though the reserve companies do pilot land speeders and bikes... that doesn't necessarily mean they pilot the tanks, too. Because they would be listed under the armored company instead of the 8th.

Essentially I'm trying to figure out if Space Marine vehicles have Company/Squad insignia, what they would be (for Blood Angels in this case), and where they are normally placed on the vehicle. I already know how to mark infantry of all kinds. I don't know how to mark my vehicles/crew so that it makes sense fluff wise. The vehicles don't seem to belong to any company other than the armored company. And, crewmen may or may not be from anywhere else in the Chapter. It is kinda puzzling me. If I don't figure it out I'm just not going to give them company/squad markings at all.

Regardless of who actually pilots them, According to the Insignium Astartes, in a codex chapter Rhinos and Razorbacks are maintained by a Company's motor pool, and it is appropriate to decorate them with the tactical markings and number of the squad the vehicle carries into battle.

Land Raiders, Predators, and, ironically, bikes and Land Speeders are maintained from a central pool (the Armor and loaned out to companies as the need arises.
Re:Space Marine Vehicle Pilots

Land speeders are piloted by either assault marines from a battle company or by members of the 7th reserve company or the 8th reserve company (Insignium Astartes, The Black Library 2002)

bikes are driven by assault marines from a battle company or by members of the 6th reserve company or the 8th reserve company (Insignium Astartes, The Black Library 2002)

Large independent formations of vehicles are crewed by members of the 6th and 7th reserve companies (Codex Ultramarines, Games Workshop 1995)

More recent rules publications and models seem to indicate that the mechanicum faction within each chapter has a more developed role within the armory. The adeptus mechanicus shoulder pad that comes with the space marine vehicle kit and the shoulder pad and armor style of sergeant chronus show a more permanent armory/mechanicum tie to tank commanders.

I could find no mention of who drives rhinos and razorbacks that have been permanently seconded to companies. But logically it would seem that a rigid adherent to the codex astartes wouldn't have a single free marine from any active battle company, and would have far too few members of the headquarters staff to operate the vehicles. That leaves either members of the reserve companies for the duty, or perhaps the background is being ret-conned to include a larger contingent of marines that have been permanently assigned to armory detail. These marines would be in charge of the maintainance and care of the vehicles, in addition to driving them in battle. The 6th and 7th reserve companies would therefore only drive armored vehicles in large brigade style deployments...

That makes the most sense to me when flipping through the various space marine background material.

Space Marine Vehicle Pilots

The whole 1000 marines refers to the marines of the line and reserve companies. Every codex to date has included extra marines outside this group. Even the Battle Company boxed set recognised this by having 106 marines as it included the Captain and his command squad. Even then it missed out the chaplain and there was also no librarian.

The earlier codices suggested that marines with a flair for tanks or flyers would be more or less permanently attached to units that operated those vehicles. Chronus seems to be an attempt to reconfirm that, rather than being a retcon.
