1750 Space wolves

Hi there,

I'm in the process of building my space wolf army http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/283233.page and I wanted to make a couple changes to my previous list. I'm planning on tailoring the army after Gunnar Red Moon's company and, as you may or may not know, he likes his long fangs. It's more spammy than something I'd normally build; however, they're all units that I like and consider to be effective. Just looking for feedback.

Rune priests in the rhinos. Heavy Flamer razorback was out of points shaving necessity (10 points, could have removed CotS).
Re:1750 Space wolves

For a moment while reading your Grey Hunters listings I thought you were playing plague Marines with the number 7 showing up so many times.

Overall, I would say that you have pretty much everything you'd want and need in a list at 1750. Plenty of fire support, plenty of horde killing ability.

Your question regarding troops is somewhat valid; however, if you manage your hunters right you will have plenty. For example, say you have 5 objectives on the board. You have two nearly full units that can be used to sit on pacified objectives. Additionally, you have a third unit that can run in and burninate anyone or anything camping on that objective.

I give your list two thumbs up

In all honesty I would probably keep the Heavy Flamer Razorback for those times when things get too close. Especially if you have to rescue another unit from being tied down in assault by a tar pit. Additionally, negating cover saves is something your Army really doesn't have; however, the Flamer can do that in several instances that can count. (i.e. Nob bikers, Land Speeders, etc.)

Your Rune Priest powers are pretty solid. The only one I may suggest toying with is Murderous Hurricane. Try out Storm Caller as everything within 6" garners a cover save including vehicles.

Otherwise, you're solid.

jmurph's ideas are solid as well so you could try either way out. Dropping a Rune Priest is kind of big; however, it garners some additional Close Combat benefits and firepower for your Army.

What type of enviornment do you play in; lots of tourneys (comp or no comp), pick up games (competitive, fluffy).

If you play in comp heavy tourneys, the spamming will likely cost you points as well as the negligible equipment upgrades on your TWC. Not saying it's right, just advising it can and does happen. YMMV.

The 2nd Rune Priest seems a bit out of place. I think the points could be spent to help the Grey Hunter squads out by getting some Wolf Guard or a Wolf Priest.

I'm not a big fan of Storm Caller as I've found it fairly easy to get 4+ saves on my vehicles via positioning and terrain. Getting cover saves for my infantry is fairly easy as well.

I'd keep Chooser of the Slain as it helps with Living Lightning and can keep certain armies at a distance. There aren't many armies that rely on Infiltrate, but Shrike SM army is one type that does heavily rely on Infiltrate.

BTW, I like where your going with your Blog. Looking pretty good so far. Can't wait to see how things look with some paint.

Re:1750 Space wolves

@jmurph--I see what you mean about dropping a rune priest to find points to work with, it's the most logical choice. Your alternatives to the RP are sound, but I'm inclined to agree with Unholy_Martyr's comment that dropping a rune priest is a big hit: I could raise the GH to 10 strong with a second melta, change the HF razorback to TL Las or Las/Plas, and fill in the remainder with 3 MotW. I see this as about equal value (wolfguard are 3 man min. squads so there are no points available to consider that option). It's an even 100 points swap. Wow, tough call. Need more input on this suggestion in particular. Thanks, jmurph.

@Unholy_Martyr-- Murderous Hurricane or Storm Caller...TBH, I'm not sold on either. I went with Murderous Hurricane for the same reason Sarigar mentioned. Although, it is nice to take a cover save with you.

@Sarigar--I wouldn't take this army to a comp regulated tourney. I would have less fun playing good comp armies with a spammy army, even with the points deduction to redress the difference. All my pick-up games are competitive, in that I always try to win. I love seeing fluffy armies, and I would apply a suitable handicap to even it out and maximize enjoyment. These can be some of the best/most memorable games. Regarding your suggestions: Wolf Guard I could see, Wolf Priest not so much. I kinda only see a WP running with bloodclaws and their variations. Your comment on Shrike SM seals the deal, I forgot about that. It's really one of my least favorite concepts for a list. About my blog--thanks! I'm trying to true scale some grey hunters at the moment, and just "perfected" the look. Stay tuned as the project continues.

@Tokugawa--You know...you got me thinking more and more on the stronos pattern razorbacks. I see my list as being largely defensive, with a hefty counter punch. I think Las/plas suits it more that TLLC. It's going to come down to modeling-- is a pintle TL Plas a suitable representation, with a turrent LC? I think this is my only issue now. TWC at 3 or at 4--I'm gonna say I prefer a fourth to the alternative proposed.

That was some awesome feedback guys, I really appreciate it. Keep it coming if you have anymore thoughts!

I really don't think JotWW is as great as everyone thinks it to be. It works best on low Ini dudes ( I'm looking at you, IG/Nurgle ), and even at that it's still iffy. Murderous Hurricane/Tempest's Wrath are the two best abilities for RPs after LL, at least until Storm Caller and cover saves with vehicles gets officially FAQ'd. Forcing difficult/dangerous terrain tests on any unit is nothing to sniff at, and MH can literally stop Land Raiders in their tracks.

I'm not sold on the Wolf Standards either. It looks like you're getting a huge number of attacks on the charge, which is great, but without a PW or Fist, you're not gonna be going anywhere vs. a ten-man SM squad. You already outnumber them in attacks, so that's a possibility to shave off points. Your TWC already perform in CC admirably, and there's no need to risk your GHs when they are so valuable in objective games.

Also, why not shave off a GH from the 7 mans and stick them in vanilla Razors? You have tons of anti-horde, but one melta isn't taking full advantage of the roving firebase that Rhinos can offer, and a Razor is five points for a TL HB that can help vs. dedicated horde.

I see that you want to stick your RPs in the Rhinos, but I would suggest sticking at least one with your Fangs. Fire controlling LL into anything while the rest of your Fangs ML stuff to death is great, and you have the perfect amount of Fangs to do so and still hop on that Lazorback.

As for the comments on the TWC's gear.. it's obvious you're trying to keep them efficient pointswise while maintaining wound allocation effectiveness. I usually stick them with 2 Storm Shields per group, and a Wolf Claw/Fist combination on those. It's huge points, but it allows me to take on just about anything in CC.
