[WIP] Cell-shaded Tau Army

Since I posted my Gun Drone in the P&M forum (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/286731.page) and got a lot of great responses, I thought I should post up shots of everything as I paint it!

For this army, I wanted a brighter more cartoonish look to it, due to the Tau's cartoon and anime influences. So I settled on a scheme of Enchanted Blue and Blazing Orange.

After I get the entire army up to Tabletop standards, then the plan is to go in and add in thick black lines and start highlighting.

Here's a pic of the Gun Drone!

And a picture of 4 completed drones all together.

Here is the squad that I'm going to be working on first. A squad of Firewarriors and a Crisis Suit, which is currently functioning as my commander.

And an upclose shot of the commander. I think he came out awful dramatic like.

I based all of the models before painting, since I heard that it's easy to screw up a paintjob with a few missed dabs of PVC. There's one more to be based, then I'm ready for my next step. I went with a muted rubble for the flock, since I want attention on the models themselves.

After priming white, all the models will be washed with Badab Black, to bring out the lines. I'll post up pics when that step's done!

Well, I think your Cel shading sounds like blacklining, it's a very common technique.

Looks to be a good start on the job anyhow!

MajorTom11 wrote:Well, I think your Cel shading sounds like blacklining, it's a very common technique.

Looks to be a good start on the job anyhow!

Thanks!

For now, the blacklining is the main thing that'll make it look a bit cartoony. The black-lining combined with the color scheme and the detail change up should give it a cartoon feel.

That'll get me to tabletop, then I can go back in and make it look better. Do very thin black over the shaded areas like how most cartoons and anime do their shading.

Moving along, I finally got these guys Washed, which has successfully unprimed them!

The photo looks a lot more splotchy than it does in reality.

What it does really nicely though is bring out all of the lines. Every little fold of clothing, dent in the armor just pops brilliantly.

Hopefully I'll be able to move to the next step soon and put down some Enchanted Blue on these guys!
