Mach Dice version 2.0 for Iphones and Itouch

I know that version 1.0 was reported on Dakka sometime back, but I couldn’t find any threads announcing version 2.0 so here it is:

Only costing 99 cents the app allows a roll up to 100 dice and can roll different colored dice to distinguish between different attacks. It can lock dice in place to permit others to be rerolled, and the rolled dice can be organized on screen by dragging them around with your finger to separate hits from misses. The best function in my opinion is that it can list the individual die rolls on the bottom of the screen ie; "2x6, 4x5, 3x3, ......" for quick tallying.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPICxqLeZ-k

I see it as a time saver and a convenience. My apologies if this is old news.

Mach Dice version 2.0 for Iphones and Itouch

Get your ceramite boxers on!

I like automating dice rolling, for convenience and speeding up play.

But the promethium brigade of code monkeys assume everyone is going to hack the algorithms to 'cheat' and tend to flame down suggestions like this.

And then theres the ones that think the physical manifestation of the dice are the heart of the game blah blah.

It still seems silly that random number generation of an alternate means promotes so much controversy.

I think I'm a member of that promethium brigade, and it's not so much the assumption that everyone is going to hack the algorithm to 'cheat', but that
a) implementing rigged dice is easier than implementing "fair" dice
b) without the source code, there's no way to prove that the algorithm isn't rigged

I'm off to go call the Plastic Dice Mafia and get someone sent over...

Mach Dice version 2.0 for Iphones and Itouch

What that system needs is a way to set a target number, ie a way to measure successes.

45d6, set target number to 3, roll. Show total amount of rolls exceeding 2.

Now that would be neat and really speed up play.

Disclaimer.
I do prefer using real dice and this app still have the inherent problem of making it difficult for your opponent to keep track.

Mach Dice version 2.0 for Iphones and Itouch

The problems with these are:
1) People will say you are using rigged devices.
2) People will say that, in order to be 'Fair', the computer will give an entirely balanced set of results i.e. that if you roll 1d6 36 times, you will get 6 of each number (roughly).
3) People will claim that you have re-rolled behind their backs.

I wish it would work, but, at least where I live, it won't.

Sometimes we don't even roll dice anymore. We just run the rolls through a spreadsheet and take the appropriate number of models off the table. Saves time, and the dice usually work out that way anyway.
