Bugeater GT June 24th-26th, 2011 (Omaha, NE)

The first annual Bugeater GT is going to be held June 24th-26th, 2011 in Omaha, Nebraska. The Bugeater will be hosted at a local high school that I teach at. The nice thing is that in exchange for providing the facilities and concessions for the tournament, proceeds will be going to the debate team that I coach. We've been facing budget cuts (as everyone has in public schools), and so the chance to bring in any money at all through hosting a Warhammer GT makes me pretty happy.

If you thought the Nova Open format was appealing, then this is the tournament for you! We will be operating a very similar tournament, as we hope to run an event that appeals to the full spectrum of Warhammer players from the competitive tournament players to those that enjoy the painting and modeling side of the hobby. Although the tournament is still 10 months away, here are some basic details:

General Info
-Open Gaming and Blood Bowl on Friday night!
-4 rounds Saturday, 2 rounds Sunday. In the 2 Sunday rounds the top tables will have the semifinals and finals built in to determine tournament champion.
-1850 points for 40k, Points to be determined for fantasy but we're playing around with 2500
-The winner of the tournament will be based on strictly win loss to qualify for the semifinal/final tables, and there will be awards for the top 4.
A fully painted army is required to play in the tournament, even though the two categories have separate awards. I view a painted army as a prerequisite.
For Painting and Modeling, there will be the following awards:

The Golden Grot (Best Painted Single Model, Awards for Top 3)

The Golden Gnoblar (Best Converted Single Model, Awards for Top 3)

The Golden Gobbo (Best Painted Army, Awards for Top 3)

There will also be a Sweepstakes Trophy, to award the player who best represents the overall hobby.

There will be 64 slots. If there is a lot more interest in playing, I will adjust accordingly.

This has been how I've wanted to run a tournament for a couple of years now. I feel this gives equal opportunity for those who a more into the painting and modeling to receive awards, and while giving people a chance to compete based strictly on the outcome of games.

We have applied to get added to the Indy GT circuit for 2011

Entry fee will be $50.00

About Omaha
The biggest barrier I see is location: most people have never been to, or don't think much of Omaha. Omaha is a great town with a lot going on. The high school we'll be playing at is right around very close hotels, and some excellent local restaurants - two local microbreweries are within 2 miles of the tournament. The College World Series will be finishing up, so if you love baseball fly in a couple of days early and enjoy the inaugural season of the new ball park! Omaha is about a 6 hour drive from Minneapolis, or a 7 1/2 hour drive from Chicago. You can get to Omaha from any major city via one connection in most cases, and here's the list of cities I know have direct flights to and from Omaha:

Chicago
Dallas
Denver
Detroit
Houston
Las Vegas
Milwaukee
Minneapolis
New York
Phoenix
Orlando
St. Louis
Tampa
Washington D.C.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at RoyersT@gmail.com. I will keep this thread updated as well as at http://www.bugeatergames.com

Quick question - what is more preferable to people - Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday? Both are a possibility, and I'm hearing from some local people they'd prefer Saturday/Sunday but I wanted to check with everyone here.

Thanks!

Tim

Now that the school year has started, I've begun to ramp up the preparations for this tournament, so I'm giving the thread a bump as there is updated information on the first post. I've emailed Mike about help with the format of the tournament, because I've been wanting to borrow from the Nova format for quite some time.

So if you enjoyed the Nova Open, and you're looking for more events that offer equal awards for all aspects of the hobby, with a appealing tournament format - consider coming to the Bugeater!

Another update - we now will have two days of full rounds, so everyone is guaranteed six rounds now. Plus I've secured a place Friday night to have open gaming, and we're working on getting some blood bowl tables up and ready to go.

Registration is still 3 months away, but playtesting of missions will start sooner, and GW is reviewing their applications for new tournaments on the circuit in October, so I'm trying to get the word out now - we've got the local game shops supporting us and a ton of space (the Commons, and 2 full size gyms), so keep reading this thread for updates!
