To hit vehicles... clarification

Sorry if this has been covered, couldn't turn anything up with search.

The rules on hitting a vehicle as per page 63 are pretty clear. My question is in regards to the "Note:" below the table which states ("When assessing how far a vehicle has moved, only take into account the actual distance covered from its original position. Moving backwards and forwards or driving around in circles does not help!"

A strict interpretation of this would seem to mean that if you moved in anything except a straight line with your 6" combat speed move, you would have actually moved less than 6" due to the nature of triangles. This note would seem to then imply you would still be open to an automatic hit. Even though many 6" moves involve a turn of some sort to get around an obstacle or terrain etc.

If it does involve turns however, and only not moving directly forward and backwards, I could go three inches, turn 175 degrees to the right and move back very near where I started and claim I got my 6".

So how are situations such as this handled?

To hit vehicles... clarification

If your vehicles are stationary, they are auto hit. Any movement beyond that requires a to-hit roll in the assault phase. If they move 1/4 of an inch it a 4+ to hit.

I think you may be mixing up what is required to hit.

Edit: Just to clarify, as long as the vehicle does not end up in the same position (or any rotated form of the same position) it has moved for the purpose of determining hits.

So:
0" (stationary) = Autohits
.01" to 6" (combat speed) = 4+
6+" (cruising or flat out)= 6s

inseeisyou wrote:If it does involve turns however, and only not moving directly forward and backwards, I could go three inches, turn 175 degrees to the right and move back very near where I started and claim I got my 6".

I'm eager to hear the argument which attempts to differentiate between "moving backwards and forwards or driving around in circles" and going three inches, making a turn, and moving back very near the starting point.

Otherwise, I have to assume that you're simply trying too hard at this point, and agree with what s2ua7 posted. If you take a picture of the vehicle's original position, and take a picture of the vehicle's final position, superimpose the two pictures and measure out that the vehicle succeeded in changing position by two inches, it only moved two inches and is only going to be hit on a 4+, even if the vehicle could have gone fast enough to use some elaborate path by which the vehicle the vehicle could have traveled sixty inches to get there.

In other words, if you could have gotten there by a shorter route, it's assumed that you did.

To hit vehicles... clarification

I'm with Solk on this one. Vehicles are assumed to take the shortest possible route when all other variables (difficult terrain, etc.) are eliminated.
