Opinions on the strengths and weaknesses of the Warriors of Chaos?

Hello all,

I am a long time High Elf player, and I recently decided to start a WoC army, and I was hoping I could get some advice on the tournament scene?

This is what I understand so far,

-Focused on Active Combat Resolution, as opposed to Static (Skaven are an example of Static Combat Resolution)
-Damn tough to kill, with the high armor, & high toughness?
-Incredibly mobile with its Flying Heroes, core cavalry, and special cavalry.
-Powerful special magic lores, with Tzeentch just pulling ahead of Nurgle. (This is extremely close)
-Wizards who have an armor save, and can fight (This will be a big change for me.)

-Powerful special magic lores, with Tzeentch just pulling ahead of Nurgle. (This is extremely close)

Not really, Nurgle is good for lvl 2 or lvl 1 wizards for Buboes, but that about it. Tzeentch is king, hands down. Nurgle is more to support Tzeentch Lvl 4

You pretty much nailed it.

Their magic can be devastating, their combat IS devastating, and they can be mobile with their cavalry.

One of my favorite units that I would throw into every single list is

Marauder Horsemn - Light Armour, M.o.S, Throwing Axes, musician (5 man)

For 96 points, it a pretty nasty fast cavalry unit.

Re:Opinions on the strengths and weaknesses of the Warriors of Chaos?

Their weakness is low model count, slow foot units, and non existent magic defense other than just taking scrolls and DD generating wizards. Combat characters are too expensive and you have to take wizards for defense.

This means there isn't many real options, even though they have more units available than most books.

Lore of metal is WoC's bane. They really get hurt by this lore so badly you pretty much have to take a fair number of DD and a couple of scrolls.

That being said they aren't terrible, they just tend to be a mono build army with only one or two obvious lists. (and most competitive players know how to deal with them as a result)

MoS marauder horsemen are in fact the bread and butter core of this army I can't really think of a core choice I would take over them TBH.

Opinions on the strengths and weaknesses of the Warriors of Chaos?

Typically I run 3 Sorcerers (Sometimes one is a lord) and an exalted BSB (sometimes with the book to turn him into a caster).

There's a reason they are called Wizards of Chaos. They have trouble with maneuverable armies that don't actually want to engage. Lore of Tzeentch helps with that.

Opinions on the strengths and weaknesses of the Warriors of Chaos?

Weaknesses are no Skirmishers, so the only 360 degree charge units are random movement Spawn.

Shooting is unconventional, though Hellcannon is there as an option (I think it's great) for big nasties/panic tests. The only other shooting is throwing weapons from the fast cav, and some magic items/special characters.

Characters are strong, but expensive. Fighting characters hit hard, but don't get awesome defenses some other armies get (though they are no slouches). Magic items are pricy. Wizards, especially lords get pricy, costing around 400 points for a lord but he might be your (possibly only) answer to a Dragon/Bloodthirster.

Overall, I enjoy the army a lot, it's currently my most played Fantasy army. Great to paint too.

Opinions on the strengths and weaknesses of the Warriors of Chaos?

Karon wrote:Combat characters are too expensivei

-----

Not really, Exalted are truly nasty for what their points.

110 Points for a HERO that can rival my beastlord in CC with the proper magic weapon.

Really, I think a good build would be a Sorc. So upgrades including basic mundane upgrades are going to bring his cost higher. As for his statline, I'm not overly impressed. Sure he has good WS, T, and S, but he isn't that bad when it comes to characters. A saurus scar vet is cheaper and usually just as good. A DE master is cheaper and can be more survivable. Depending on who gets the charge, a tomb prince can kill him. Hell I've had a unit champion smack around an exalted champ. (yeah, it was a crimson death wielding black guard, but still cheaper than a exalted vet) His leadership isn't even worth taking him over a sorcerer. The only thing he is better at than a sorcerer is +2 WS, +2 attacks, +1 initiative. And his base cost is HIGHER than the sorcerer with no extra levels. (as in a scroll caddy....) The sorcerer can take everything a exalted hero can, except for mundane weapons and armors. The sorcerer gives magic defense, and the ability to use ranged attacks (magic). Can a exalted hero do this?

As for the list outline: Other than the emphasis on warrior blocks, you describe most WoC lists that I've seen. Usually I see the knights in at least 2 units, and 1 or more chariots (depends on how many knights). Rare, if taken are war shrines.

Some cool choices to use.

This is the main strength and appeal of the forces of chaos. Win, loose, or Draw, Chaos will always remain cooler than the opposition.

As a disadvantage, WOC will often have a lower model count.
