Right you'se lot listen careful like. I'se gots a plan......

Well well I'd liek to say hello to everyone here seeing as this is my first post and welcome to my orky blog of orkiness. Now I've been aware of the hobby for a number of years now (My first Whitedwarf was issue 230 and I've got them all up to the newest issue 365, so however long that is). Over these years I've was into the hobby a lot at the beginning then my interest ebbed (due to lack of people to play against and other stuff). Recently however I've found a load of ork models and after finding this forum happily started painitng one. This is where this blog comes in, I've decided to paint all the ork models I have up too actually look like a unified force (and also not like someone has thrown a bucket of paint over them rather than tried to paint them).

This is the basis of the blog. Below will be several pictures of the first model I've painted in ages. I know its not up to the standard of a lot of the blogs but I'm happy with it was fun to paint which was the main thing. So without any further ado heres the pictures (please excuse if their poor quality) of the first fully painted though unbased slugga boy

Please also note that althought it may not appear to be amazingly detailed I thinkt he model has several heavy coats of previous paint on him which has hidden some of the detail. I also have tried making do with a limited pallette of colours based on what i have here with me. These are primarily Goblin Green, Codex Grey, Chaos Black, Chainmail and Snakebite Leather witha few washes and highlight colours.

The original premise for the ork was to be bright and vibrant but once I'd shaded it I ditched that to go with a gritty look instead. The pattern on the chainsword is also my first attempt at freehand patterns and though not amazingly neat I think it has a good effect seeing as its a ork that did the job anyway.

So there you are. Hope you enjoy and I'll try to have some more for you soon.

Waaaaaagh!

JamesG

EDIT: Should probably remove flash on future models as well lol.

Waa... wait a minute where'd da boyz go?

Wow.
That's actually not bad at all. At LEAST as good as half of the armies I've seen, I'd wager. Seriously.

Just a couple notes:

a) As you pointed out... lose those mold lines. Cleaning the models of flash before painting them will increase their appearance a hundred-fold.

b) His teeth look like you tried to make his mouth all bloody, like he'd been eating his opponents. Either that, or you used brown for shading and your lighting is giving it a red tint.
Whatever you did there... don't. The "mouth full of blood" look really doesn't work, IMO.

c) Paint your base. A lot of people don't. I know... but, if you've got an obviously painted model, and obviously unpainted basing materials, they contrast each other harshly.
Unless someone is painting at the level where his model looks like it could just step down and walk off of the base itself, he should not use unpainted basing materials.

d) Put a black circle at the end of the gun barrel. It'll support the impression of it being a barrel, instead of a solid piece.

Add those 4 hints into what you're doing already, and you'll be on your way to a fantastic looking army in no time.

Eric

- Oh... and your checkerboard pattern actually looks pretty good. Don't be so hard on yourself about it.

Re:Waa... wait a minute where'd da boyz go?

Cheers guys for quick replies.

Rose_Mountianz: Thanks. Its notmy first but the first in a long time and probably one of my better or best jobs lol. Yer the flash lines are annoying. I'll rememebr that on any models that arnt painted alreadu or that i buy.

MagickalMemories: Thanks. The mouth wasnt supposed to look full of blood just liek they were his gums. i think the problem is the basecoat was yellow lol. Ive painted all the yellow white now and it looks a lot better in my opinion as that was giving it a garish look in the photos (I only noticed after I'd uploaded them). The base is in progress. I took the photos while waiting for the pva to dry so it will eventually be based. Doen the gun barrel idea and it does look a lot better, thanks for that tip .

Cheers about the checkerboard I was a bit apprehensive when I was doing it as I dotn have a rock steady hand.

RaegMachine: Cheers. A lot of the details were obscured because of the coats of paint the old model had had before rather than the paints but I'll bare that in mind. As for the clan well I'm planning a bit of fluff for the next update so you'll find out then .

Waaagh!

James_G

Re:Waa... wait a minute where'd da boyz go?

Right heres a update for you all you hummies!

Now I know I said I'd have soem fluff for you all but I havent got round to that yet . Instead though I have a warboss converted up and have retocuhed some of the paint work on my slugga boy from the last update. Still not got the vomit brown to base him yet though but the texturing stuff is all glued on (model railway grit I think).

Firstly the touched up boy. Since last time I've added a clan symbol (more on this next update) onto his shoulder plus given him a grainy green highlight and some wear and tear damage on the chequered pattern as it looked too pristine before. In my opinion he looks much better though the annoying flash lines are still there.

Secondly meet Gorbid 'Four Fingers' Bloodtoof (working name lol). This is one of two warbosses I have. He did orignally have a attack squig but I apparently converted him ages ago to have a power fist (will count as claw). Whihc model this is from I have no idea btu its a really old one. The job weasnt and still isnt perfect but there orks so I'm not to bothered. Unfourtunately he'd also had his boss pole removed to make some for nobs which meant I had to remedy that. Some horns, a spear, the back of a hunter killer missile, zombie weapons and a old golbim sheild emblem and hes got a nice looking bosspole which I can put the clan logo on later. I have also added sights and a rail to his combi weapon and considering this is my first proper conversion work im pretty happy with the outcome.

Anyway enough talking heres the picture before I paint him.

Well hope they keep you interested and I'll have a proper update and maybe a completely finished and based ork next time for you.

Waaaaaaagh!

James_G

Replies:

alexwars1: Cheers and I'll keep that in mind for the next model though I do think some of that is downt he model being old with several coasts of paint already.

Right heres another update. Unfourtunately I dont have any real fluff yet (still) but I do finally have a finished model, base and all and here he is.

Yay for a finally finished mini only another like 50 (see below) to go and this one only took me 5 days. Oh god this may take a while......

The other thing I have is a converted Big Mek made out of slaver old techmarine, dwarf, space marine and some (badly done) gsing lol. Though it is only my first time using it and it shouldnt be to noticable when hes done. So anyway let me introduce my second character, Madsquig the Mek and his two grot oilers Fingerz (the teloscope one whos meant to be looking for loot for his master) and fixit (the one with the spanner). Both are old Zapp gun crew members who I think make good little grot oilers. Madsquig himself is a rather weedy ork with a huge brain obsessed with mechanical things. The techmarine backpack counts as a Power Klaw and the wierd thing in his hand is the controls for a custom force field. The body is a slaver becasue I wanted the ork to appear that is prowess was in his brain rather than being large like nob and I dotn thinkt he outcome is that bad.

Anyway heres several pictures of him before painting with his oilers.

I have also written out a army list as althoguh I doubt I'll play much at all with them it gives me soemthing to aim for and on the off chance I do play, a legal army. As such I've decided my force will be built around individual blocks. By this I mean I will assemble a force out of 500 point building blocks. So I can pick and mix a force for the battle. To give you a better idea heres my 1000 points army list I'm aiming for split into too blocks (funnily enough both legal 500 points forces as well lol).

Gorbids Boyz (490)

(100) Gorbid ‘Four Fingerz’ Bloodtoof
Ork Warboss Heavy Armour, Power Claw,
Boss pole, Combi Shoota/Skorcha

(195) Gorbids Grinderz
20 boyz Stikbombz, Nob, Powerklaw,
Bosspole, 1 Big Shoota, 1 Rokkit
Launcher

(195) Gorbids Goreboyz
20 boyz Stikbombz, Nob, Powerklaw,
Bosspole, 1 Big Shoota, 1 Rokkit
Launcher

Madsquiggz Mechanical Mashers (510/500)

(130) Madsquig
Big Mek Power Klaw, Kustom Force Field,
Cybork Body, 2 grot oilers
(fingerz and Fixit)

(120) Scrounging Gitz
30 Gretchin 3 Slavers

(100) Madsquigz Masher
1 Deff Dread Big shoota, Rokkit launcher,
Armour plates*

(160) Madsquigz Mini Masherz
3 Killa Kanz Big shoota, Rokkit launcher,
skorcha, armour plates

*Armour Plates removed if I need the force to equal 500 points.

Now finally I'm goign to stop boring you with talkign and leave you all be.
The only problem I really have with your list is the stikkbomms.
Orks are only I2. Rarely ever are stikkbomms going to make any sort of signifigant difference in your list.

Remove the stikkbomms and you save 40 points. I think that's about enough to buy 10 grots & a slaver to use as a meat-shield.

Honestly, there are other problems I see in the list, but it's pretty obvious you want your list to reflect the models you have, so I don't see a point in addressing them. The stikkbomms is the only thing I see to change, based on that presumption.

Eric

I have some of the old stikbomb models and as I thought it'd be a waste to just ignore them I'm planning on mixing them into the squards to represent the stikkbombz as I like my armies to have the equipment they have shown on them. I also doubt I'll ever really play games with them so its not to much of a problem. The lists are there to provide building block incentives for me really.

The basis of the army isnt exactly to be game winning. Its a ork warboss and his cronies backed up by a mad mechanic that likes big stompy things.

Update:

Right well I started on test model b today whish was a completely untouched model. Taking into accoutn your lots advice to water down my paints I've got a picture of the models finsihed skin to show you. Despite it taking a lot longer than normal (I think about 2-3 hours on the skin alone due to giving it several thin coats instead of one thick one) I think it looks a lot cleaner and the highlights crisper than the first one. Anyway here he is.

I also thouht I'd removed all the flash off this model but missed th ebit on his wrist wrappings so will have to fix that. Touch up is also required in parts.

Waaaggh!

JamesG_89

Replies:

Limbo: Back a little bit like hes about to bring his axe down hard on his victim but yer it does look messed up. That was the reason why i choose it for a clean canvas test mini but the front view is horrific of it lol. Side dosent look that bad though.

Update:

Again not much as I paint so slowly (as I like to make sure all my models are done to the best of my abilities) but I have the second test boy finished competely accept the base and the clan markings. The pictures below should also help with showing that the funky arm posing only really looks bad form that one angle. Ive also gone with a lighter colour scheme than the first boy to help provide some individuality between the orks after all the clothes are just scavenged material like most of thier stuff. I've also foudn that by using just Vomit Brown, Snakebite Leather, Codex Grey and Chaos black and Flesh washes that I can create a large number of different sahdes for the clothes. As you'll see in the photos this boy turned out a lot lighter than the last one did but still looks unified thanks to the constant skin toning and once applied clan markings. Also the boots are a unified black becasue I didnt want them blending with the base too much.

Anyway heres the pictures.

There you go. Im not working on a stikkbomb holding model and may then start of the warboss but not sure.

Waaaggggghhh!

JamesG

Re:Waa... wait a minute where'd da boyz go?

Replies:

MagikalMemories: Yer I've done so for the next few minatures and your right it does look better thanks.

Limbo: Cheers.

Right heres a few more photos of my attempts at batch painting. As you can see its a bit of a fialure as far as the actual batch painitng goes as I tend to randomly finish parts of different models before starting on the other ones rather than do the coat of paint on all of them at once. As you can see form the group photo below, apart from the two boyz I've already shown you the other ones are mostly at the clothing stage of painting with a couple more completed than others. Anyway heres said photo as well as a few close ups and other bits of writing.

A few close ups.

This ones to show the Nob and what I plan on doing with all the stikbombz in the mob. The skull on the end is staying but the fialed explosions on the side are going to be changed later.

This shows a group shot close up of the detailing and freehand checks and graphics.

Finally before the last one some random fluff.

'Yu calling me a liar huh?' Gutbag yelled at Torp 'I'll knock ya lights out' he added hefting his rokkit launcher with intent of smashing Gutbags head in with it.

'Dam right I am' Torp yelled back turning to grab his own rokkit launhcer 'You were on the otherside of that stonking hill how'd you blow the damn tank up?'

Gutbag raised his rokkit launcher ready to strike Torp when a large hand grabbed him before he could bring his weapon down. Gutbag, enraged turned to yell freezing as he saw the the Warboss Gorbid himself stood there staring intently at a gretchin who completely oblivious to what was going on around hum had begun drawing crude pictures on one of Torp's rockets. Grabbing the gretchin in his huge powerfist who yelled and tried struggling away Gorbid turned to the two orks.

'Right' He stated throwing the gretchin at Torp. 'He's now yours and I wants him to draw a image on each of your dam rokkits. Gutbag your to find another runt to do the same. That way we's can tell whos rokkit killed wot alright!' he finished strolling back into the crowd of orks.

Gutbag and Torp stood there for a few seconds before their brains figured out that the idea may actually work ignoring the obvious fault.

Right so thats got some rather useless fluff out the way as a vain attempt to explain why the following picture shows a shark head on the rokkit cone. Real reason is just because I've got a bit carried away with all the free hand painting but hey it looks good and adds some character so hey alls good.

There we go thats all for now. There should be a lot more updates next week as I'm on holiday so that'll be good.

Waaaagh

JamesG_89
