EDR ( event data recorder ) systems in your car, voluntary in the US and maybe mandatory in the EU?

Do such devices as EDR pose a yet unknown threat?

Read an article about electronics in cars. Mentioned EDR as a "black box", used to provide data collected with the cars own electronics. There seems to be a specification of those EDR by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the US.
So were looking at the first stages of black boxes in cars?

Unfortunatly, the EU seems fond of the idea of mandatory EDR's in new cars.

Pro's:

- recorded data for accidents
- recorded data to base the value of a vehicle on when sold

con's:

- recorded data of any misdeed against national laws
- recorded data to be used in leasing contracts, car insurance,guarantee,...
- recorded data to be used in movement profiles
- recorded data to install a general toll system nation/continent wide

How does the recording of data and its provision to your government affect you?

It's all down to how the information is used. If it is used solely for helping to reduce accidents or ascertain the value of a car then they are a good thing.

Sadly, i wouldn't trust any company or government to use the data responsibly; they'd either sell it on to the highest bidder or use it to make more money from the populace.

Ok, not going unnoticed is an issue?

Isn't the probability of a outsourced data storage ( and the possibility of access of several interested parties ) a greater threat?

Example:

- your car may record your behaviour.
- it may record when you passed a speed limit.
- the EDR may now:
a) inform the police if you violated it, or
b) the electronis automatically slow you down but your attempt to violate is recorded
so the EDR could get you in trouble, either with the official traffic control or in a worst case scenario with your insurance ( tends to drive too fast ).

Electronics may assist you ( brake when too fast ) or assist someone else ( don't hinder you but inform others ).
A lot of data is already collected and a EDR could go both ways, helping you in an accident or quality issues of your vehicle, or just
benefit those your having a contract with.
