Re:CSM Army List (My first/need a lot of help!)

Whilst Lucious indeed may be a nice killer, you've got one even more ferocious for just 5pts more.. One whom makes the Berzerkers of Khorne, which are seen as the most ferocious melee MEQ's, look like amateurs.

I'd chose Khârn the Betrayer over Lucious, 2 more attacks, 1 more strength, Blessing of the Blood God, Gorechild... Lucious being a sneaky bugger whom would move around the enemy bulk to take on the oponents characters, whilst Kharn would ram through that bulk, cause a large hole in it on his way, then decapitating the enemy HQ.

Besides, looking at the Marks of Chaos, why would a MEQ want +1 initiative? Sure, they get to strike before other MEQ's, but chosing between that an +1 Attack from the mark of Khorne? Never, not for melee units such as Raptors.

Your army there is pretty close to 750 points, you said you wanted either 500 or 1000, why not go in between and pick 750?

The only reason I'm considering Tau, DE, Necrons or Tzeentch rather than a Khorne army is because I already had a Khorne army (Which I never ever lost with) at 1000pts, which my dad threw away in a rampage for reasons only known to him.

However as I spoke with him today and he promised I'd have the money he've owed me for years, I'm considering to recreate my unstopable force. (IG lasguns tickled, brought down a few, as soon as I got into close combat I slayed entire platoons in the initial assault and sweeping advance. The SoB's I met were like a bit like running into a thin, fragile wall, I stoped up for a moment, but then came Khârn.. Whom killed a few of my own, but also slew the Sisters.)

Of course I don't expect to win everything and anything I'd do, but if I'd meet such army as the one you listed with 750pts of my old Berzerkers, I'd make 'em look silly. (As adviced, Noise Marines without their special weapons are just expensive CSM's)

Anyhow, Lucious have several nice things but.. Why pick one of the Slaanesh's lizards when you could have a Juggernaut?

Besides, you don't >need< to have Khorne Berzerkers to have Khârn, he's a one-man army in CC. An interesting idea would to pick something like Thousand Sons and Khârn, them slowly marching forth, blasting down whatever comes in reach, and him rushing forth charging anything that comes within his reach. Back him up with Raptors for CC specialized units, and you've got a very, very wierd chaos Army. *nod*

If you don't want to spend points on upgrading the weapons of your marines, but want something more than normal CSM's, pick Plague Marines, their toughness is really anoying as they already are MEQ.

I'll run a short list of the 'special' CSM units from my viewpoint. (Of course some will dissagree as everyone have their own favourites.)

Plague Marines: People often find MEQ units to be resilient, hard to kill off, anoying. Well, Plague Marines are extra resilient, extra hard to kill off, and extra anoying. Put them within range to blast your bolters at the enemy, avoid close combat, and your oponent will have some real trouble. Of course heavy weapons may be a problem (Aren't they always when one's playing MEQ's?) but something to support the Plague Marines, such as Raptors or Bikers, or Havocs.. Or a predator, will take care of such problems.

Noise Marines: Something I will never understand, but then again, Slaanesh is not easy to understand. They're half wannabe-melee, and half wannabe-heavy weapon experts. I've never seen them in action, but I can't really immagine them being very good. Initiative 5, alright, you hit first against most... But.. That's it?

Khorne Berzerkers: What one gets when you'd combine Space Marines with Orks, but better. WS5, Furious Charge giving S5 and I5 with 4 attacks on the charge. I sure wouldn't want to stand in their way!

Thousand Sons: What one gets when a Sorcerer plays around with some Space Marines. Bring on the heavy weapons, there's a 50% chance with their invulnerable save that a weapon that would normaly kill a SMC in one shot, will watch their target keep on walking with bolters blazing. And any MEQ's are gonna have trouble with those Inferno Bolts, and as they're slow and purposefull and may fire their rapid fire weapons as if they were stationary, MEQ's may either sit tight and wait for their doom to come walking, or try to launch an attack only to find themselves being fired at before they may return fire.

So, about your choise: Look at the models, consider the ones you think looks good, keep their abilities in mind and immagine your tacticts with them, if it feels good, go for it.

Of course you could pick normal CSM's but... Then you could just as well pick normal Space Marines and get some cool champions/wargear/units that Chaos don't have - These are the main units making them different from the Space Marines. (Well, if we don't include Daemons, Sorcerers and... More Daemons.)

Oh, neither of them have any good Anti-Tank stuffs, except the Thousand Sons' Sorcerers if they get Bolt of Change, so you'd probably want to get something to keep such metal monstrosities at bay. And as you like Raptors, consider giving one or two of them Melta Guns (Jump Infantry with Meltaguns are good at quickly getting into range to bust tanks.)

Edit: Ah, found the Sonic weapon upgrade for the Noise Marines.. And alright, they can out-shoot Plague Marines or other units with normal Bolters. I still don't get that I5 though, it feels.. wierd, unnescessary.

Second Edit: Cool, it's been 30 min and none have bashed me down for being wrong yet! Am I perhaps right for once?! *cheers*

Re:750pt-1000pt CSM Army List

Well the Plaguemarines have no more offense than normal CSM, just more resiliense.

And when it comes to special characters and fluff, I think it's completely alright to take a character's profile, change his/her fluff to fit into your army, perhaps even pick another model to represent it (although that won't be accepted in Tournaments or such, I think.) Khârn for example, is visually nothing more than a Berzerker, except he've got a larger axe.

1000pts of Khorne:

Khârn the Betrayer; then fill up with Berzerkers basicly, but have something like Tanks or Obliderators on the ready if you know you're about to face someone with alot of Vehicles. (Although APC's are commonly pretty rapidly destroyed by some charging Berzerkers, as they always may strike against the rear armour value. A 6 from a Berzerker on a Rhino/Chimera causes a glancing hit, and since each charging berzerker has 4 hits, and a squad has about 10 in 'em, the Rhino would prolly go down in the first assault.)

The only Vehicles I ever had to face though were Chimeras and Rhinos, so I never got any Obliderators or Predators/Vindicators.

*prepares to be assaulted by people whom dissagrees with that a Khorne army with just Berzerkers can take care of themselves*

btw,

Hehe, congrats to you Riffzor! And as you know, I am no threat to your victorious speech...

I almost got into a battle frenzy myself here when thinking of Khorne...

But about painting Khârn in other colours... I once painted a LotR Orc blue-skinned with an orange coat and a lime-green belt. The model itself looked completely ridiculus, but when there were some hundred Orcs, one barely noticed him in the crowd. Khârn is a special character though. I'd save that project for a while, until you've decided about your colour scheme on your army and tried it on a few 'normal' models first.

2 Obliderators vs. 5 Terminators - Without upgrading the Terminators, the Obliderators are by far better Anti-Vehicle support, and can toss in some nice Anti-Infantry when needed. However, it depends on how you decide to build your army.

In my Khorne Army I had a group of 5 Chaos Terminators w. Mark of Khorne and pair of Lightning Claws on each, within the first turns, I had them deep-strike where I saw my oponent sent forth his heavy infantry to shoot down my charging Berzerkers, landing within a few inches, they could quickly get into CC and butcher them. (Kinda funny to see how fast those guys would get down whatever they'd drop down onto) They are mainly for sabotage though, disturbing the oponent's plans. Quite some times I killed light vehicles with them, APC's and such, as well as locking the enemy into CC so that my Berzerkers could move ahead without being shot at.

If you're going for a more basic CSM army though, you'll have heavy weapon choises on your troops, which can deal with most common vehicles. Though Land Raiders and Monoliths would give you trouble... But then again, there's little one can do against Monoliths except for spamming everything you've got onto it and hope you get lucky.

i wouldn't really suggest Plague Marines to be your choise with a troop of normal marines on the side, they are tough, but I'd get something more offensive, Thousand Sons or berzerkers (Or possibly a FEW Noise Marines with sonic weapons, they're expensive!)

*cheers*

kharn is not so good until you get to higher points. the betrayer rule pretty much makes it useless to put him in a squad, and if you leave him by himself he'll get shot down. btw kharn is one of my favorite chaos characters (if you couldnt tell by name.)

as for why you would want the +1 initiative. 5 means for the most part you are always gonna get your attacks.

Re:First CSM Army List

Emily: what point level are you trying to play at?? I added up your current list and it only hits 730 points, which is kind of an odd point level.

Previous suggestions are pretty well spot on lucious is a great character so if you like him stick with him, other wise for 5 points less you could run a winged deamon prince with mark of Slaanesh and lash of submission.

Don't over look the standard csm troops they are by far the best basic troops choice in the game point for point.
