What should I do?

So a kid at school lost a binder full of trading cards. No big deal, right? Well, he looked everywhere for it, at school, around his house, and could not find it. I was suspicious of another of the card players, who had stolen stuff at the beginning of the year, but I felt bad that I was suspicious, and i didn't really think that he had stolen the binder. Still, I got in contact with the suspect's older brother, a friend of mine, and asked him to take a look around his house for the binder. It turns out that the suspect had stolen the binder. I now have custody of the binder, and will give it to the kid from whom it was stolen when the weeked is over and i see him at school.

My dilemma is this: should I confront the theif about this? or the school authorities? what should I do?

No proof it was done at school.... leave out the school.

Its a binder and trading cards... hardly number 1 crime in your local area for the police to deal with.

Brother and you have a talk to the parents of the thief and the thief would be the way I'd go about it.

Also tell the kid to secure his belongings more effectively.

Damn straight I would confront the thief and involve the school too. The one thing reviled above all else when I was in the forces was a thief and I feel the same way now I am a civvy.

well that depends on what kind of parents they are. Where I am there are some parents that would be like "bad" and then maybe pat them on the hand. But if they are those parents that are holy holy if my child isn't perfect I'll kill them.......I pray for the thieves stolen soul(it won't be a good prayer either).
