Tournament shenanigans?

Reading the battle reports, and the "how'd ya do?" threads, there seems to be an awful lot of tournament shenanigans in one form or another. I usually hear slow-playing, and people bending rules to their favor, even though they know how it is supposed to work. Even some players taking illegal lists, or rolling dice into high lipped boxes.

My biggest concern is loaded dice, that is my #1 fear in a tournament environment, because I really don't know how I would deal with it.

Or just flat out cheating, *rolls for reserves, two genestealers pass; player procedes to place down three squads, and denies that he only passed with two...*

Magic tape measures always seem to be around also... (9" movement!!!1!!!1111!...)

Any dakkites have any of those experiences? Do not mention any names, especially if they're dakkites.

I don't play in tournaments so I've only had to deal with this sort of thing in 'friendly' games. It's no less the same.

I usually overlook movement issues unless it's blatant cheating. It's usually pretty obvious when it is.

Loaded dice... well, there's no real way of telling without physically testing the dice on your own so it's a moot point. What you should look for though are habits. If you notice they only use a particular set of dice for say Ld tests, then I would assume the worst and ask that they stop using particular dice for a given circumstance.

Poor dice rolling habits is probably the single most 'tactic' I run into. I just make sure they understand they need to call out what they're rolling for, call out what number they need to roll and lastly roll for it in the open. If I notice they regress back to their bad habit I will just ask them to do this each and every time they roll.

One way I deal with movement issues is that during MY shooting phase I call out how far away a unit is from my units.. and get them to agree

Then simple math takes care of the rest. As for magic tape measurers.. just buy one of those g9 6" blue measuring things.. I use them, they're awesome

Loaded dice? Well I dont know.. if someone wants to cheat that badly at a 40k tournament.. alright go for it? For myself I just have a bag of totally random dice so impossible for anyone to say I have "sets" since its just a collection of whatever ive bought over the years

Heh, I have more or less the same dice, though accumulated over a year, since dice in my shop are traded on a weekly basis...

Rolling before declaring what you're rolling for is an awful habit too. I feel bad for you oni, we have one player around here that does that, and he is moving away next week.

For real. If someone wants to win so badly that they are going to resort to loading their dice, they can have it. Or, they will end up just being a bad player, and we should all beat them with pure tactics anyway.

No, if they have loaded dice, certain unit will be prone to going the entire match without dieing, and killing almost everything, and getting great damage chart rolls.

High-lipped boxes are TFG because you cannot see their dice, like they're just rolling dice and picking up models...

If my opponent want to cheat... whatever... I play for FUN not to win. if I catch them at it... and I usually do. I walk immediately. In the middle of the game if I have to.

Again I play for fun, if someone has to cheat in any way it just kills the game and it makes no sense to continue.

I've had opponents bend rules, and generally I just go with it, as long as its not game-breaking.

for example, I had an opponent the other day declare he was firing his lootas. Then he rolled for number of shots. THEN he declared what he was firing at.

Because he rolled a 5 for number of shots, giving him 36 shots with his lootas, he picked my vindicator to shoot at, knowing he'd have a good chance of glancing it to death (he immobilized and weapon destroyed it). He only picked the vindicator because he rolled a high number... had he rolled a 1 or a 2, he'd have probably picked a rhino, because he had a great chance of killing one of those. But because he had the higher number of attacks, he picked a higher value target.

I let it slide... mostly because I wasn't sure the lack of mobility from loosing a rhino wouldn't hurt me more than the loss of a vindicator, which might kill 3-4 orks per turn (scatter + cover). Still though, its an example of "forgetting" the order of things, that shouldn't have happened.

But if that does not work there is medication that may help you even your moods.

High boxes even... Just ask the guy to show you the rolls. Really its not that hard

I *do* play for fun, my motto for tournaments, is "well, 3 matches against people i've never played before!"

These opponents drain the fun from the game, by cheating, bending rules, being asshats about WYSIWYG...

Yes, I do, and when they repeatedly don't show me their rolls, I get annoyed.

I don't have a big problem with the dice boxes, as long as they show their results. It keeps the dice out of the models and on the table. I think my dice were loaded to roll 1's at the Semi-Finals though, for real.

I failed just about every dodge roll on my skimmers against those darn battle wagons! Glad you made it to the semi's though. I have no problem if they show it either, though rolling from 30 orks charging, to one cover save, everything in an extremely high lipped box can get a bit hair pulling.

Played countless tournaments since 95 and only ever saw 1 person cheat.

However threads like this really are just getting tiring.

If you are the type of person looking for this stuff all the time. You are going to find reasons not to like many of your games. People will not live up to the standards you have set on others for how they should play. You may think it should be everyone's standards but you are already creating senerios of what to look for and what to do if you see this or that.

If you believe there people out there that are always going to screw you over. You will find "stuff" to be dissatisfied with your opponent.

I'm probably getting over the intial shock, since up until last month, no one has cheated against me, so this was a little disheartening. I hope I never have to go through that again, it drained all of the fun out of that tournament.

If they're getting tiring, there are alot of other threads to read.

I am not the "type of person" always looking for this stuff, I was just interested to hear other dakkite's stories.

I always get a chuckle when these threads crop up. Yes, I have played against my fair share of douches. I remember one time being charged turn 2 by a killa kan army due to the magical tape measure in a tourney. However, that's about it for bad tourney cheating.

I have encountered loaded dice, thumbed minis, over priced army lists, etc. all in casual play. Consider my casual games are about 10% or less of my actual game play and that becomes staggering.

I find the chance of a cheater/TFG is greater in a one off game than in a tourney by far.

Yeah it's always amazing when one says "Could you measure that from the board edge please?", a puzzled look "Uh, what why?", that dissapproving frown "Because there's no way on earth that's 24" which you would have needed 6 and 6 or your run rolls for which you roll 5 and 3...", facial twitch of somekind "What are you talking about rah rah rha"... yes red oun's go fasta ineeded.

I did play a guy once who hadn't been showen correct movement for models and had BA moving anywhere from <1" to 9" from consolodations and such - but he was happy to move them properly once it was explained - top bloke.
