Well here in Miami, we are very tourny minded especially in 40k. Most everyone tries their best to beat face. Cheese seems to be the main course for the day. Know what else? We all enjoy it, have fun doing it and get along fine with one another. I have been only playing wargames for about a year and my fellow gamers always do their best to grind someone into the ground. It has also made me a much better player. Hopefully folks will get over themselves with new edition.

40k and Fantasy are two differnt beasts when it comes to tournaments. There is a major difference between the top teir lists in 40k and the top tier lists in Fantasy. I would wait to see if the new edition of fantasy has really balanced things out to a playable level before I would start collecting demons or else you will never find anyone to play outside a tournament and if the tournaments you play have a comp score it will be extremely hard for you to place well as of now.

Need help with first demon list

A'ight jspyd3rx, I'll give 'er a shot. I mean, sure, daemons are mean...but c'mon folks, they're not invincible. In fact, I'd argue that Dark Elves are better most a' the time. And an all-Khorne army? Not the best. Not the ab-so-lute worst, but pretty damn close.

So, a competitive Khornate army (I do not have a book, though, and have never played them myself, so forgive any point-mistakes)...oh, and I have little to no idea about 8th edition, so I'm going off of 25%/25%/min.25%/25%/25%:

Bloodthirster of Khorne + Obsidian Armour: 500

Herald of Khorne + Armour of Khorne + BSB + Standard of Sundering + Chariot of Khorne (285)

20 Bloodletters + standard (252)

20 Bloodletters + standard (252)

12 Bloodletters (144)

12 Bloodletters (144)

3 Bloodcrushers (210)

3 Bloodcrushers (210)

Total: 1,997
Units: 8
Models (Unit Strength): 72 (86)

So...Bloodcrushers are probably worse than Flesh Hounds. Point-for-point, they are more agressive (2 out of four attacks at +1WS and S), but far more fragile (half the wounds, and MR1 instead of 3). I have generally seen multiple, small units used more effectively for daemon CC than large blocks (except for Plague Bearers), and I would also recommend some furies to give your punch-stab-cut army some flexibility, but when you say "spam bloodcrushers", ya' gotta' cut a lot of stuff.

Re: Need help with first demon list

Well the list looks interesting to play but I wouldnt expect to win a lot with it against any horde army. With the new 8th edition your bloodthirster will never make its points back before the game ends. Since everything he will fight will be stubborn usually at the generals leadership and if there is a BSB in the army it is going to be a slow grind for him. Also you will need some magic. Magic is way to good now to just ignore it totally because magic resistance does not mean you get extra dispell dice anymore. All it means is you get an additional +1 to your ward save for every level of magic resistance. And most spells going off are not direct damage spells. They are spells that weaken the whole unit or buff friendly units rediculously for example ( I can make a unit of skinks 40 large toughness 6 with stubborn 9 re roll leadership. And if you stay in combat with them you will take 2d6 strength 4 hits everytime.) You definitly need scrolls and tzeentch heralds to beef up you dispelling and offence.

You will definitaly need something to take out gun lines and artillary. If you dont you can say good bye to your units and blood thirster. Just because artillary is deadly accurate now no guess range (just place). Take for example playing agianst Empire a Horde Gunline army. Those Mortars and Cannons that are cheap in points will ruin your blood letters even before you get into combat. And if you do get into combat you will be worn down by units of 30 swords man.

The time of making specific god lists are over for Deamons. And also at 2000 points I would say take more heralds and forget the big Greater Deamon just because your heralds will get look out sirs and survive longer. Greater Deamons can barely hide anymore since you can see through forests and over units.

The deamon army has finally been brought back down into balance with other armies now. So dont expect to be winning with massacres anymore all the time. It is a highly elite army that have to deal with horde armies that can grind you down over time. That is my two cents. Just take into account these few problems when building a list. I was also once a deamon fantasy player until they got boring. But now I would say they are one of the most challenging armies to play with. I played 1500 points of new rules with an all skink army vs an all khorne army and the guy had no chance. He didnt even kill one skink. So if doing deamons you have to mix them to be really effective. Hope that helps man.

Yeah, I'd agree with essentially all of that. Of course, I think the best way to play elite armies is to focus several of your awesome units on one crappy one, tear it to bits, and move on, rather than tossing your guys into one-on-one combats. That includes the 'Thirster; I think he's still a huge threat, mainly because of his potential to add his kills to a unit with static CR.

The best thing I could recommend for an all- or nearly all-Khornate force is Flesh Hounds and Furies.

Re: Need help with first demon list

I agree totally that now the Blood Thirster is more of a support roll then a character/monster that can take on a whole army by himself. With deamons people have to play very smart because they dont have the models to just throw into combat. The old deamon method of
(Phase 1: Deploy Phase 2: March at enemy until engaged in combat Phase 3: Win by massacre) is all over and I am so happy that it is. I used to play deamons for a little over a year and I have to say in 7th ed it was one of the most boring armies to play. The game was so unbalanced that even deploying the deamons showing there rears to the opponent you would still win with a solid.

I would honestly say take some slaanesh they are awesome in the new addition. WIth high I and the ability to get ASF and 2 attacks a piece they are mad to rip through horde armies. I would say take a mix of Slaanesh and Khorne if you want a slightly more competative army.

Lords and big rares/specials are where they should be now.

The ability for a lord or big rare to charge into a unit of 25ish infantry win combat, and break them was just dumb. At least now people will have to use some strategy with them. They are just as strong as ever, you just wont be able to run them around the battlefield solo anymore.

Need help with first demon list

Warpshadow did a really good job writing that list with your restrictions.

The armor save on those bloodcrushers coupled with the ward will let them wade through shooting effortlessly, the only problem is that the bloodletters won't be so lucky. Its probably ok, but stonethrowers and mortars, coupled with bowfire firing in two ranks are probably just going to erase those bloodletters really quickly.

This is why most are advocating running corndogs.

They don't have that good armor save to avoid bowfire, but that will just help split your opponents target choices, and they are very fast and hit scary hard.

You could still use juggers for heralds and occasionally join units of bloodletters for a 4+ look out sir and to add the locus of khorne to the blocks.

Bloodthirster wont be an auto-win anymore, but at 2k points he can go a lot of places and do a lot of damage, just be wary of big blocks combined with BSB/generals that are in a different unit. Go after the general/BSB unit if you can rather than the big block supporting it, so you don't get stuck in a tarpit.

And honestly, if mono-god is gonna be a restriction you stay with. Taking a lord of change and 12 flamers is still just filthy, even though horrors got slightly nerfed, mono tzeentch will probably net you more wins than khorne.

Very true.

The only thing I will say is that the Flesh Hounds are actually, as I said, proportionally more defensive than Bloodcrushers. For example:

1 Bloodcrusher (70pts): 2 wounds, 3+ or 5+ save, 2 WS6 S6 attacks, 2 WS5 S5 attacks (all KB), M7

2 Flesh Hounds (70pts): 4 wounds, 5+ save, MR3, 4 WS5 S5 attacks, M8

See what I mean? It also doesn't help that the other Special options are not nearly as good, while the other Rares are all at least solid (Fiends are decent, Beasts rock, and Flamers are stupid-good).
