The Melta rule states that you get 2D6 if you are within 1/2 the max range of the weapon.

(1/2) * 6" = 3" Melta range.

That's only for the Witch Hunters one. If GW wanted people to take that statement seriously, they'd stop calling it a FAQ, which indicates that it is GW's answers to common questions and therefor it is close to both RAW and RAI as you can get.

If memory serves correctly, the Sisters of Battle Inferno Pistol is also AP2.
