In house rules?

Well this question came up gaming tonight.

We were 2 games in at my house. When a new player came across a rule in a our sheet of in house rules that he could not understand.
It stated that some armies could use units from other armies as rare slots. As long as there was no fluff conflict. IE dwarves with Orcs. The rule states clearly that a captured mount can be used with rules from an army book with said listing. Yet he still did not see how my friends orc Warboss on star dragon could work with such mixed rules.

I know that’s a type of conflict but… I do suppose an orc could tame a star dragon if the rider was killed……
Any way Do you guys have similar in house rules and do you use them often. Do new people have a hard time expecting said rules?

Comments welcome.

Thanks ippering

The house rule that I always like was that anyone with killing blow could kill blow a something the same size as it. That was a lot of fun with the deamon prince charging into a unit of Kroxigors.

As for your rule, is it any character can ride any mount from any list? If so that reminds me of old 5th ed, where there was a list of about a dozen creatures that the characters could ride on. I always thought that it was pretty cool.

If it were me, I would make it so that the character could only ride a creature from a similar side. Something like, evil characters can only ride evil creatures. Just to add a bit of limitation. So, no Star dragon for your Orc Warboss, but maybe a Chaos Dragon in stead.

The Orc on Star Dragon seems to be a bit of a fluff problem. Why take a Dragon when the Orcs already have a large flying mount? If the player really wants a dragon - why not use the DOW special character on dragon?

As for your questions - no, the group I play with does not use house rules. And yes - I would have a hard time accepting the sorts of house rules you describe.

I really don't think it is remotely possible that anything other than a High Elf of great wisdom could tame any sort of High Elf Dragon. It says plainly in the High Elf book that the Dragons in the Dragon Spine Mountains rarely awaken, and only to a High Elf. If they only awaken to a High Elf when they are asleep, they'd just rip that Ork Warboss's head off of his shoulders when it's awake.

At the club I attend (Bunker 308) there are no house rules, as such (re-rolling cocked dice isn't really changing any rules), but I can see the plausibility of a Unit of Dwarfs being fielded in an empire army, for example. However, I don't think that mounts from one race should be used by another, as the steed was brought up with that race. Can you really see a Dwarf flying a Pegasus?

I think insane courage was accepted in the BRB because so many people used it as a house rule.

We once had a rule that punished sulking when the dice go bad. You have to be good friends though...

With low walls, or partly damaged terrain: if you could feasibly hide behind it, you can choose to hide behind it (you can't see them, they can't see you). Less of an issue in this game, but helped for deploying scouts in the previous versions.

I wanna say in regards to the whole mounts from different races thing I would suggest 2 conditions.

Firstly that there are types of "intelligent" mounts (dragons, unicorns, maybe griffon's/pegasi.) that can't be tamed by an enemy army (you could still have say brettonians riding star dragons or something though.) this would also apply to necromantic mounts which require a necromancer to not crumble.

And secondly something of like a size class for mounts, like a dwarf can't really ride a horse because it's to big for the dwarf and an ogre can't ride a goblin spider because the spider is too small.
