My first post here, I have been browsing this forum for a few months and I gotta tell you I'm shocked and amazed at the rich amount of talent shown on these forums!!

Mad props to you guys and thankyou for the inspiration and ideas you have already given me...

I'm new to the hobby and thought I'd post up some progress of my first ever mini's (still WOP) from the AOBR set..

Having a ball, learning something everyday and generally enjoying the hobby so far.

Comments, suggestions and your pics from AOBR sets more than welcome! Lol, I need more AOBR inspiration to stop my going and buying a necron army (my missus is - )

SM's - frustrated with these atm my version of Sons of Medusa just isn't working for me....



This guys sword looks better wet, anyone tried glossing over ice/electricity details? (think that may give the look i was after?)

Your main Yellow-Green is complimented by Red-violet (Think purple) or a "split" complimentary color is red and violet (purple with more blue). A "Triad" is Blue-Violet like regal blue and Red Orange like blazing orange.

Those will help for choosing colors for edges of shoulder pads or misc. stuff.

For the main color you could try first filling with a darker color and either lighten the raised areas or us a lighter color and color the edges.

The sword looks good for a first attempt. I think you style is going to show. You have a very bright vivid taste in colors. I find that when you flock a bass (even if its just with railroad grass or sand or coffee grounds) it makes the figure stand out much better than just standing on a plain plastic base.

would be especially helpful to the orks to have a brighter color than black base because they have dark colored boots and pants. I've got some Nob conversions down the page somewhere, as well as some *interesting* conversions down the bottom. The first pics are a bit blurry, but what can ya do, eh? (get a new camera, is what I can do )
Can't really help ya with paint schemes though, but you seem to have that down pat already

Talizvar- I maybe painting to thinly? it takes atleast 3 coats to get some sort of color consistancy on the SM's.
I tried going from a darker green and also from Iyand darksun as bases both were more of a pain than white.
Violet/blue/purple would all make interesing color combinations, i'll experiment with them

Brushslip- I'm scared of washing that green, i badab blacked one of them it was a very bad idea lol. I dont have asurman blue i may have to have buy some

Guitardian- atleast 3 stages on the orc skin was thinking it might need another... undecided asyet, i'll sleep on it lol. Bases are coming once I have the paintwork down.

HA- Thanks for the link, your mini's are great, I can tell you enjoy them! Lovin the objective marker and fence!

Ergotoxin- sepia on the way tonight if i drag myself away from the typewriter, heaps of other stuff to detail aswell as teeth
Helmets started off with black undercoat followed by really thin layers of darkened chainmail, one of them has a very small amount of gold (going for a bronze look??)

Luna- I guess to me they just look abit monotone? Definitely need to experiment with highlights and off course battle damage.


All a huge learning curve for me, I need to experiment with my camera/lighting aswell- they aren't glossed i just had bulk lights on them (real cold dark/cloudy winter day here today)
I'm looking forward to being at the stage where i can confidently hack up some of these guys and really make them different.
I have some great ideas that I am resisting the urge to put into action atleast until i finish the the first 10 standard minis.
Looking at two weeks off work so potentially I could be at that stage quite soon... might have to raid my friends bits box serve him right for having cool minis that make me wanna get some

I think you've done an excellent job for a first time painter.....If you could see some of the horrors i came up with when i first started :S

You've probably noticed how well the blue of the captains power sword contrasts with the green you've used as your primary colour. Why not try painting one of each marines kneepads the same colour? It would certainly help to break up the green

Edit: Don't worry about painting too thinly My SoB mini's have at least 7 layers of paint on their armour before i consider them done. Generally speaking, the thinner your paint, the better. Nice colors on the SM´s, but its a bit flat. I agree that to keep that nice day-glow look white is good to have as the base.

I never did say: that for starting out this is exceptional work.

I tend to build up from black (I am one of THOSE people) so I am not as good at this technique.

I would agree with others that more layers look nicer. I assume you are using "Scorpion Green" as the main color?

Maybe try this: White prime - partially diluted Scorpion Green (milky looking) X2 (apply again) - Thraka Green Wash - Milky Scorpion Green again - hopefully it should look done. I find the washes tend to blend out some of those streaks but you always need to apply paint again after. If you want to get fancy, add a slight amount of white to the diluted Scorpion Green again and apply a light layer to raised flat surface areas that would catch light (top of leg, top of forearm, top of helmets) it may recover some of the day-glow you lost with the wash. The lighter highlights on edges as suggested would work well. Decide where you want to draw the line on the work because I assume you want to play with them eventually...

Scorpion green is the main color i have been using on the SM's.
Taken ideas onboard, need to get down to GW tomorrow, I'll have an update soon.

depends, if youre going to keep updating this until the end of time it should be in blogs. but if its just for AoBR im pretty sure it should be here.

about the painting now, i gotta say WOW! that looks much better than my guys and the ork skin looks pretty good! you are missing the teeth and nails in the last picture but other than that, they look pretty good!
