http://www.war-europe.com/handoverFaq/index-en.html

As rumour abounds about the 40k mmo, spare a thought for the dying embers of the fantasy game that so nearly could have been amazing.

I signed on to this from EQ2, and it was, in Europe certainly, handled terribly by GOA, poor server balances, crashes on the opening days due to ill managed loading populations and unwillingness to merge servers rapidly enough after the initial clamour (I lasted 5 months before quitting). Now they have given up and the few survivors still playing the game in Europe will be allowed onto the US servers, owned by Mythic. Arguably how it always should have been.

But too little far too late.

I hope this game's sorry tale is being reviewed by the 40k mmo creators and lessons being learnt.

On a happier note, as this game continues to thrash about and die, once the revenue from the IP rental to Mythic dries up, GW will probably need some urgent injection of monies... wonder what that might mean for us eh?
scream to go faster kiddies!

The realm vs realm should have been cross server, unilateral.

Each server ended up highly centric to one side at the top tier, this lead to the other side sulking and playing alts at lower level and suffocating other players from joining the dominant side.

The players themselves, in far too many cases, were people who thought the Realm Vs Realm game was Person vs Person, instead of basically 2 raids vs each other. I lost count of the soloing healers who concentrated on dps or the tanks who didn't protect the healers and ranged dps.

WoW has, due to it's popularity, brought some really shoddy players into the mmo genepool. GOA/Mythic did nothing to alter the makeup or balance and as a result, the servers vented players at alarming rates following what was a very successful launch in terms of games bought.

Hopefully The Old Republic and even, perhaps, the 40k mmo will have at least one dedicated RP server, since these seem to avoid the majority of the gits and attract a slightly more mature player base.

I liked playing a goblin shaman in Warhammer online, I thought the voices were hilarious and it was just really good fun to run around. The game had some very nice touches, but it was obvious that the issues with population imbalance were going to be insurmountable.

The same was always true in WoW, most servers are mainly alliance. On Aszune where I still play now and again it used to be about 70% alliance, which meant places like the Crossroads were always camped out completely. They can't really say they didn't see it coming.

I'm very much not a fan of Mythic or Goa. Both companies seem to me to have little care for the fan base, which is a big problem when that's how you make your money long term. It's why I'm not going to try Star Trek and will wait until The Old Republic comes out before I switch to another MMOG. And that's from someone who's played EQ, EQ2, DAoC, Horizons, Conan, WoW, Champions Online, APB, DnDO and probably a couple of others I've forgotten about .

The good-

I was impressed with the artwork. The maps were top notch as far as paper to screen are concerned, and some of the encounters were really neat.

The chaos marauders fighting at the mill, then it evolves into a Giant running up behind you. The black tower encounter, and the battle for the kep being some of the high points.

The character creation wasn't all that bad.

A good batch of equipment to choose from that coincided with the P and P game.

The Bad-

Connectivity issues abound.

The static battle encounters and the way in which the respawn rates were great to respanw right on top of you if you stayed in the general area.

The way in which Mythic continually tryed to make this into Be all end all "Oh, we're a WOW killer..."

Upgrading servers didn't do the game a bit of difference. If anything, thew game was worse for the wear.

Instanced servers, instead of just putting in three or four and calling it a day. I played on one server for about two weeks where I was the only one in the game.

I have no love for the WAR game, but for a direct to screen fantasy version, it does the trick. I only wish that they would forget some of the stupid hat tricks that they learned from WOW and remolded the game into a serious RPG.

The Ugly-

PVP in the game is so out of balence that it is a joke.

The connectivity issues in the middle of a fight. (Boom, roasted.)

The inconsistant support and realignment of the game when they found something of issue.

It was as if they were only interested in cranking out the fianl product, and the game itself was a secondary goal

Sad to hear about the decline.

With the upcoming Warhammer 8th edition, I will renew my subscription just to be able to inhale the atmosphere of walking in a Dark Elf camp, to visit all regions of Ulthuan again, to experience a Nurgle infested Imperial village and cleanse it with fire as a fire mage. The game gave me the imagination of how the Warhammer world actually looks like, how I must do the terrain for my tabletop to copy that atmosphere etc. I now own a good collection of inspiring Imperial terrain and will continue with Dark Elf terrain.
WAR - GOA finally relinquish their servers, Mythic pick up the remains.

One problem with this game and other games like it is the selfish attitude of the people who play it. I primarily blame WoW for the "me first, at any cost" mindset that pervades MMOs. Too often there is no teamwork on either side, as players blindly rush in to get what little xp and reknown they can before dying, respawning, and running back with no penalty. The term 'zerg' is now appropriate for the general state of online play as game producers go out of their way to create a game that is easy to preempt the inevitable whining on forums and a game's success is based on how many copies they sell and how much money is made, rather than how good the game actually is.

Warhammer Online has many features that both make it a good game and are completely ignored. Incessant comparisons to WoW plague many MMOs and create the impression that the less similarity there is, the worse the game must be and Warhammer Online is no different. The game is beautiful and is exceptionally faithful to the look and lore of the Warhammer world, the Tome of Knowledge system is ingenious, and some of the shifting access mechanics (eg Land of the Dead) really shake up the way a 'traditional' MMO is played.

The game does have its flaws though, foremost to me being population imbalances. They couldnt have forseen this and implemented a system to fix it that did not include a queue to log in? BTW, adding NPCs to balance the numbers is not a solution, as NPCs are simply targets.

Anyway, make of it what you will. I have no hope for the 40k MMO; that way I wont be disappointed.

The gameplay trailer is a minute long and the interview just states that it will be WoW friendly, which is a great way to get some subscribers.

Around abouts 11+ million subscribers isn't really a failure. Simple gameplay and basic graphics are what made it the 800 pound gorilla of the MMO world.

MeanGreenStompa wrote:http://www.war-europe.com/handoverFaq/index-en.html

As someone else mentioned I don't think Vigil is learning the lessons Mythic figured out the hard way.

WAR had some good points but ultimately they failed to deliver a game that really could hold up in the market.

Really makes a good impression of how ignorant you are to say this.

----------

I played WAR for a long time, and just quit again about a month ago. I leveled my chosen up from 23 to around 27-30 I believe through RVR and LOTD. With the "new" patch that came out recently for WAR, I really didn't like it and how end-game looked like. It was just another scenario to play.

I've said it so many times, but the main problem with WAR was its engine. Even top-tier computers like mine couldn't handle some of the high-end content because the server engines were so gakky.

His Master's Voice wrote:

mikhaila wrote:So I have to ask: What part of 'Making money while someone else does the work' is 'beyond stupid'.

It's not me doing it, so it must be stupid.

The part where you watch the reputation of a great IP get handled ineptly, tanish your growing reputation in the online gaming and computer gaming world and have your rich story and background (I don't play fantasy, but i'm assuming its at least half as cool as 40k) and instead of having a cool warhammer game you have something that seemed like an exact WoW rip off (I know, blizz ripped off gw but neither her nor there) if whoring something out for a profit is acceptable to you then fine. its be fine with me too if it was done with some class. maybe thats the dev fault (porbably) but this is where i would actually like gw to have a heavy say in how things go and I would hope that someone would say "lets innovate here, lets make this world distinctly GW. maybe I didn't play through the game. Maybe I'm talking out of turn here, being ignorant. but it seems like they cuold have tried alittle harder.

40k mmo has a real distinction because in a lot of ways they also have a chance to innovate the way WoW did. They don't exactly have much in the way of competition in the futuristic mmo category. if they can make the gaeplay more dynamic than "target, shoot, repeat" and add the depth to this that is needed this has the potential to be the next WoW. Not everyone likes fantasy crap. I'm sick of swords and magic and that being your only option for mmo's unless you want to be a Human resources middle-manager in space with eve or pay to play team fortress with global agenda.

sorry for going off-topic there. the point is if gw as a corporation is willing to sell their souls for the rights to rent the ip and bastardize the game for a few extra bucks (I'm afraid that might just be the case) then what chance do we really have? It shows a lack of respect fo what they have built and a shift from quality product to making money. when improving your profit magin every quarter becomes more important than maintaining a quality product and a solid profit margin eventually you will run out of goodwill of your player base, new players will stop comming because of the massive expense to play and eveutally your profit base will erode until it is no longer sustainable.

ugh, just delete this if you have to. I'm a crazy person.

Finally.
Too late though.

I bought WAR when it came out, but I was appalled by the way Europe got such a crappy deal as to be hosted by GOA.
GOA is pretty incompetent, and GOA made it a hell of a lot easier for me to never play beyond the "free" month, as I never wanted to give that company my card details, or any support what so ever.
The game itself wasn't too bad, though. I really liked the Greenskin zones especially.

I sincerely hope that the 40k MMO won't do stupid things such as choosing GOA (again), and preferably just do away with geographical segregation.
If EQ1 ran fine without geographical segregation, then todays game surely does not need to. (other than for purely greedy financial reasons of course - 1$ does not equal 1€ still and people actually do have friends in many places of the world, in this day and age.)
