Kohrne-ish CSM 2000pts - FUN list - input? (oh, and a little ranting about GW's mgmt)

Non-competitive - just looking to play against my 10-yr-old Space Puppy son. He has been collecting and painting for a while now, started with vanilla Space Marines, his own Chapter: The Purple Hearts. Had cool purple and gold scheme to begin with, then jumped on the Blood Angels bandwagon when it came out and added the Space Hulk termies to his collection, THEN became obsessed with Space Wolves - so he's got a lot of painted, converted, unpainted, etc models to choose from, including Land Raider, 2 preds, and a Baal Predator for armor to field (yep, he's got just about every "cool" unit from those lists, so he can field just about any combination that I've seen listed here).

Myself: I've slowly been collecting Spikey Marines - CSM - and have been reading the novels. Just liked the bad-guy theme, and of course, dad has to always be the "bad guy" so his "good guys" have someone to fight (just didn't like the Orks, or other "xenos" as much as the cool skulls/spikes/demons feel of the uber-bad-humans...

Anyway. I've collected stuff here and there, and played a few small games with my son - he's played at the local GW store here in Milwaukee (which, by the way, since this lame attempt to jack up profit by losing the very employees that made it fun for me to take my son there for weekend afternoons with the best employees I've ever seen in any store, who really LOVED the hobby, with this new "1-employee-per-store-SELL-SELL-SELL" attitude - it's become a ghost town)... Sorry for the rant, but that and the jacked up prices have left me no choice but to buy from Amazon, and less frequently (money's tight all over), and 50 bucks a pop on AVERAGE for plastic?!!! Jacking up the price, losing customer base, decimating the "character" of the brick-and-mortar gathering place for all the enthusiasts... There's just nobody to play against around here anymore. Going to buy online.

Oops. Before this post gets bumped into a rant forum, back to my topic:

Here's a "fun" (non-competitive!!!) list, trying for a "Khorne" theme, with Kahrn as my kick-butt HQ theme. I just want to have fun, with the models I have, and see what you all think. I have a few extra models I can add/swap - but this is the gist of my list, and not planning on buying any more (well, except for the Dread, which I don't have yet, but figure if I'm going to play, I really want to have a Chaossy, random, berzerking, raging, unpredictable, cool-looking Dread to go with my "theme")...

Here's what I got:

Chaos Marines Roster - Rizzen - Kharnage

HQ: Kharn the Betrayer
1 Kharn the Betrayer

HQ: Daemon Prince
1 Daemon Prince (Mark of Khorne)

: Summoned Greater Daemon
1 Summoned Greater Daemon

: Summoned Lesser Daemon
8 Summoned Lesser Daemon

Elite: Dreadnought
1 Dreadnought (CCW+Twin Linked Bolter, CCW+Heavy Flamer)

Elite: Possessed
6 Possessed
Possessed Champion
Rhino (Havoc Launcher)

Heavy Support:
1 Obliterators
1 Obliterators

Troops:
8 Khorne Berzerkers (2x Plasma Pistols)
Skull Champion (Powerfist, Plasma Pistol)
Rhino (Havoc Launcher)

8 Khorne Berzerkers (2x Plasma Pistols)
Skull Champion (Powerfist, Plasma Pistol)
Rhino (Combi-melta)

10 Chaos Space Marines (2x Flamers)
Aspiring Champion (Power weapon, Plasma Pistol)

10 Chaos Space Marines (Plasmagun, Missile Launcher)
Aspiring Champion (Power weapon, Plasma Pistol)

Total Roster Cost: 1996

My idea: roll the Zerkers right up the middle, with Kahrn twitching in anticipation, riding along with the Possessed (they look cool, and though I tried keeping the numbers to Khorne's favored: 8, my personal "fluff" is that Kahrn freaked a bit itching to get into battle (blood lust and all that) anxious to get to the "Kahrn-age", and slaughtered a couple Possessed because they were in his way... Or just couldn't contain himself... Or they disrespected him in some way...

The Rhinos roll up the middle, pop smoke, and screen the DP (No lash here. Khorne mark just cuz I want that blood-lusty, smack em around, Close-Combatty feel) and have the psycho Dread marching alongside (or behind? in front?) purposefully toward whatever concentration of my son's "good guys" I deem the most appropriate to slaughter for the Blood God.

2 troops of regular CSMs to hold whatever objectives my assaulting psychopaths leave in their wake, and the summoned Lessers and Greater Demon to pop up wherever they'll be useful when they become available. (yep, the Lesser Demons number: 8, too, Mr. Khorne). The oblits are there just because Kahrn felt they'd be useful in pecking away at whatever armor those Good Guys throw on the field for me to crack open, so my foot soldiers can bleed their passengers dry. You know, for Kahrn's Big Daddy.

I really like the idea of the berzerk, raging Dread, and the possibility of him and Kahrn freaking out and turning on their own, and the Greater Demon showing up whenever the dice figure it's time to let him snack on something, and the Demon Prince using his blade rather than lashing (I mean, come on: that big boy wants to feel the bones crush in his hands, not use magic to pull them together and let someone else punish them!). It just feels... right...

So... Input? Comes out to just under 2000... Just want to repeat: this is NOT for a competitive list - so I don't care that the DPs are not lash, there isn't redundancy, etc... Just: does this seem like a fun list to try and kick my 10-yr-old's butt with? Getting my own butt kicked is fine, as the smile on my son's face when my spikey bad guys turn on themselves, and he says "See, dad! Good guys ALWAYS win!" and laughs as Kahrn beats the snot out of half his own men... Good times...

Kohrne-ish CSM 2000pts - FUN list - input? (oh, and a little ranting about GW's mgmt)

Lemme start by saying how refreshing it is to see someone playing this game for the simple FUN, while also using it as a way to bond with his son!

For just a good time it seems like a real fun list, my only advice would be to ditch the plasma pistols on the zerkers, no heavy weapons on the CSM's, just specials, and get icons of khorne on all the squads that don't have 'em. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD and all that, make this list as khorney as possible!

Kohrne-ish CSM 2000pts - FUN list - input? (oh, and a little ranting about GW's mgmt)

Thank you, Aztralwolf! Yes, after reading these posts for months, and months - trying to use them as a sort of guide to help me figure out the game (never enough time to spend actually playing it, except here and there with my son, who has 2 cousins and an uncle who play a lot, so he is far more expert than me!) -- I've come to the conclusion that a lot of people tend to take the game FAR more seriously than it should be! It's a game - it should be FUN! I know winning is "more fun", but to be honest -- you can have a LOT of fun losing in this game, too!

Case in point: my son won a jump-pack chaplain from a person who really helped him out in the game early on. He took pride in that guy, and named him Chaplain Barq. Reason being: the contest was that he had to stop drinking soda for an entire month - and his favorite soda at the time was Barq's Rootbeer - my son lived up to his end of the contest, and when he won that model, he was very proud of it! His first ever game after lovingly putting that model together, painting it, and dying to use it in battle: his first turn - he jump-packed into a stand of trees (not realizing the dangerous-terrain rule), rolled a '1', and died. He was devastated, until I came up with this story: Chaplain Barq, with his newly upgraded jump-pack, fresh on the battlefield, was distracted when a bee inadvertantly flew into his helmet, and he went off course at the worst possible moment - headlong into a tree, crushing him instantly - and the devastators he was flying to rescue from Tyranids stopped mid-fight, seeing what happened, looked knowingly at each other, and one said: "Newbie." -- After that, it wasn't so painful, losing that model so quickly after waiting so long to use it.

I think people forget that aside from rolling the dice, utilizing the rules and maxing out points, and calculating the perfect mathhammer formulas to create the best army a codex can "buy"... It's the story, and the funny things that happen during a game, or the things you can explain away in a funny way, based on the roll of those dice. That's what makes it fun and memorable.

I don't even remember the outcome of that game, Chaplain Barq's demise... But we'll ALWAYS remember the humor in how he died. His life at the short end of the dice was NOT in vain.

So, thanks for the feedback, Aztralwolf! Good point on the plasma-pistols, I already have them modeled, but I think I can swap a few things around and keep it WYSIWIG without them. Also dropping off the heavy weapons on the regular CSMs - that'll free up points and maybe I can resurrect a couple Possessed to keep Khorne happy with his number "8".

And definitely, we'll be keeping it fun - win or lose (oh, trust me, I'm not going to LET my son win! but if he does, it won't be for my lack of trying!), but it will ALWAYS be fun.
