Alternative Miniatures

Hey guys, I'm thinking of starting up some kind of fantasy-ish army but don't particularly like any of the big block GW models. Now, knowing ahead of time that nothing I put together from an indie developer would be tourney legal does anyone know of any good 'counts as' fits for armies like Warriors of Chaos, Bretonnians, and The Empire? I've already gone through some other ranges that aren't quite as 'heroic' in their scale as WHFB (LoTR, Wargames Factory viking lines, etc.) but does anyone know of any others?

Thanks!

Artizan has a new line of Landsnecht which would work well for Empire. http://www.artizandesigns.com/prod.php?prod=1739

The Perry Bros "28mm Wars of the Roses Infantry 1455-1487" box would work great for Bretonnian bow and men at arms. http://www.perry-miniatures.com/index2.html (not a direct link - look under the Plastic Range for this kit name).

WoC is harder. There are lots of places which make barbarian character models which could fit into a Chaos army. But they tend to have character prices which rules out their use as unit builders. I have yet to find a good replacement for the rank and file Chaos Warriors. Marauders are easier - WF and Gripping Beast make a Viking plastic kit. Could also mix in the WF Celts/Germans. And that's not counting the numerous metal lines.

As to tourney legality... it will depend heavily on the TO.

If it is a GW sponsored tourney... HECK NO! They require that something like 80% of the mini be GW parts. Which makes sense from their viewpoint; they view the tourneys as showcases for their products. Someone using a different manufacturer's products undermines the whole point of their having the tourney in the first place.

If the tourney is organized by someone else... check with the TO. Some have GW parts requirements, some don't.
