Grey knights - 1850

Hey there. I posted a list awhile back mentioning my new grey knights army and all the models that came with it. That said, I finally put a list together.

Im new to MEQ's completely, so heavy criticism is requested, especially from Daemonhunter players who know how to win. If your advice is "Buy Landraiders" that's fine, but please also make suggestions based on what I own.

Thanks!

HQ

GKGM w/ Terminator Retinue (532 points)

-NFW
-Storm Bolter
-Bionics
-Psychic Hood
-Holocaust

Retinue

7x Terminators w/ 1 Incinerator

Troops

Grey Knight Justicar w/ Targeter, Artificer Armor and Bionics (309 points)
5x GK's, 2w/ Psycannon

Grey Knight Justicar w/Artificer Armor and Bionics (308 points)
5x GK's, 2w/ Psycannon

Grey Knight Justicar w/Artificer Armor and Bionics (308 points)
5x GK's, 2w/ Psycannon

Fast Attack

Grey Knight Justicar w/Artificer Armor and Bionics (278 points)
5x GK's, 2w/ Incinerator

Heavy Support

Dreadnaught w/ Assault Cannon, Storm Bolter, Extra Armor, and CCW.

Thoughts?

Intent is to DS the GKGM and the one Fast Attack squad at whatever seems to be the biggest across the board threat. I understand I cant assault after a DS, but I really dont have any other options without vehicles. Hopefully the flamer templates can catch some enemies off guard.

The rest of the GK's set up gunline style, using the 1 model with Targeter to ensure how far I can shoot. Start as far up as I can then slowly fall back firing Psycannons at the enemies softest units. The Dreadnaught is there to add to the gunline, but standing behind the GK's for a cover save. I realize it's Assault Cannon is short range, but that's the only weapon I have for it unless there's something from the AoBR box of marines I can use on him.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
( Units I own )

14 Grey Knight Terminators
1 Grey Knight Terminator with Psycannon
1 Grey Knight Terminator with Incinerator
2 Grey Knight Terminator Captains
16 Grey Knight's in power armor
5 Grey Knight Justicars
8 Grey Knight's in power armor with Psycannons
2 Vindicare Assassins
Callidus Assassin
Eversor Assassin
Culexus Assassin
2 Death-Cult Assassins
1 Stormtrooper Sergeant
20 Stormtroopers with Hellguns
5 Stormtroopers with Plasma guns
1 Stormtrooper with Flamer
1 Stormtrooper with Grenade Launcher
4 Stormtroopers with Melta Guns
3 Sister Seraphim
1 Sister with Multi Melta
1 Sister with Flamer
1 Familiar
1 Multi-melta Servitor
2 Powerfist Servitors
1 Crusader Henchman
3 Sage Henchman
1 Acolyte Henchman
1 Dreadnought with Assault Cannon
4 Terminator Psycannon arms
1 Terminator Incinerator arm

Re:Grey knights - 1850

Well...let me start out by saying...you may want to refresh yourself on the rules for Grey Knights. If I am not mistaken, Grey Knights all come standard with a form of psychic hood (i.e. the Aegis). Granted, this only blocks psychic powers cast on the Grey Knights and not any psychic power so if you're facing a large amount of Eldar or other such forces, I guess the hood would be preferred.

Realistically...Artificer Armor is taking the Justicar and making him ridiculously more expensive than he needs to be. Additionally...Bionics, while nifty, just really doesn't do anything. If it is down to the last man...let him die without taking the ship down with him.

Fast Attack Grey Knights are well...underwhelming to say the least...

Your Grand Master and Retinue are just WAY too big.

I'll offered up a trimmed list:

H.Q.

Grey Knight Grand Master
Icon of the Just, Psycannon, Hammer Hand, Psychic Hood, Terminator Retinue: 4x Terminators, Psycannon -439

Elites

Grey Knight Terminators 5x
Holocaust, Incinerator, Brother Captain with Incinerator -335

Troops

Grey Knights 6x
2x Psycannons -225

Grey Knights 6x
2x Psycannons -225

Grey Knights 6x
2x Psycannons -225

Grey Knights 6x
2x Psycannons -225

Heavy Support

Dreadnought
Multi Melta, Incinerator -135

Total: 1809

You have 41 points to work with and can do MANY things with that. Heres the deal...you have A LOT of firepower in this army with a total of 8 Psycannons, the problem you're going to have is any form of vehicle is going to ruin your day unless you play smart.

You have 4 scoring bodies now and 2 nice attack elements instead of one. Really, until you get some vehicles, you're going to be snuffed more often than not; however, if you play your cards right, I think you can surprise a few folks and come out the victor.

Agree with Martyr.

The only points you should be spending on PAGK upgrades are weapons and maybe melta bombs just to give you some sort of tank killing if you're facing a mech list.

Retinue way too big! 5 retinue is good. Put 1 thunderhammer in the squad as well. Every terminator squad 5+ models benefits greatly with 1 thunderhammer in it. You'll thank me later.

DS PAGK is horrible. It's okay if you're inducting PAGK into an IG list but running pure GK. Don't do it.

Hammerhand is a MUST for the Grandmaster. You don't want to get stuck in melee with a Dreadnought. You'll be eaten alive.

If you can locate a dreadnought las cannon arm pick it up asap! Also for 3 points give it smoke launchers. You'll be out of range for a couple rounds so use it. It's old rules smoke so no penetrating hits is quite nice for 1 rd.

All this being said, you won't have a real competitive pure Grey Knight army until you include 2 landraiders.

Are the units from AoBR usable in a Grey Knights army? IE the Dreadnaught. ( I dont think he includes a Las Cannon though)

I have that whole marine portion still after buying the box to get my girlfriend into painting miniatures with me. She painted an awesome Warboss then quit the hobby. =(

Anyways.. taking into account the AoBR stuff, does the list change at all?

Also.. where would I insert the landraiders and what would come out?

Thunderfrog wrote:where would I insert the landraiders and what would come out?

you'd find the points for land raiders by combining GK squads and dropping the dreads, also drop your GM down to a BC. On paper the GM is nicer, but in game terms for the same cost you get an additional attack with the BC and 2 GKTs.

additionally if you can't get around to buying Land Raiders at the moment, rhinos are another viable option that can bode very well in a GK list if you're aiming to be competitive, with 5 ISTs with melta. Not only is it an additional troop, but it's a BS4 melta threat to enemy tanks as the glaring lack of anti-tank in the GK codex requires alternate ways of finding that niche. If you're looking to stay complete GK I can give you a puritan example army list that does well in tournament settings if played right.

You can use them as they are based off of the standard Dreadnought. The Assault on Black Reach Dreadnought comes with a Multi-Melta arm which you can use as that is an option for Grey Knights.

Really, the Grey Knights have access to everything the Space Marines do so using a Crusader/Godhammer kit is perfectly fine as they have the same weapons and such.

Emp basically gave you the low down on Grey Knights and I'm sure his list will lead you in the right direction.

Re:Grey knights - 1850

Buy Land Raiders.

You need more antitank than "well, if I catch you, you'll get S6 melee hits." This army would never touch IG. I know because I've ran the same army but with only one Land Raider. Ideally, you need at least two, along with the Dread. Honestly, I'd consider the TLLC/ML dread, though TLLC/DCCW would probably be good also. There is a lot of hate on DS GK squads, but I don't think they're that bad. I've won games by crashing them down and being able to contest the enemy's objective with them last minute. At the same time, 1850 is not really enough points to sink into making a squad of them capable of handling a few rounds of being fired upon unless you skimp by downgrading some of the troops to just be stormtroopers. Oh, and lose the bionics.
