The only problem is gaming, every time I have played agasint IG they have been slaughterd and decimeted in the first turn.
Welcome to the guard!

Like most armies, the guard really suffers with poor list-building, though I'd argue even moreso than most. Many guard commanders have a tendency to horribly waste points on low-power stuff, which would allow you, a seasoned, streamlined chaos vet to walk all over them.

Built properly, the guard can be plenty competitive. I'd buy a codex if you're serious, and put up some lists first that other people can help you with.

Hey, ive had a problem playing as imp guard figuring it all out. No matter what game mode you play your gona want a platoon and a second Comand squad. I sugest starting w/ a CODEX, BATTLEFORCE, INFINTRY SQUAD, and mayby 2 SENTINALS w/ lascannons.

battle force gives you everything needed to start a platoon and 3rd infintry squad can be part of that or veterans. if you get two sentinals you would then have 3 making a full squad w 3 lascannons that are an insta kill on most stuff. You will have a platoon comand squad and a heavy weapons squad. Make all your vehicals w/ camo clokes so people have to roll night fire. Hunter killers on one or all arnt bad, especialy if your starting IG. ALL COMAND SQUADS NEED MEDIC. Fel no pain saves lives. Keep all w lasguns or power weapons. Infintry squads should have all lasguns and mayby 2 grenaders 2 flamers. No meltas. Anything else, just ask

FIrstly, a MINORITY of guard lists have two infantry platoons in them. Secondly, I rarely see 2x command squads. Thirdly, medics are one of the most wasteful upgrades in the entire codex, given their cost, with the only possible exception being camo netting for vehicles.

The battleforce isn't a terrible starting spot, but only if you're going with a force that contains infantry horde, mechanized or armored. If you're wanting to make a list that has a serious artillery or air-cavalry component, you might be better off buying other stuff.

Once again, it depends on what kind of play style you want, and what kind of list your fielding. Give us more info on these things and we can help you out more.

You'll find out, as you get more into imperial guard tactics and army building, Ailaros will be by your side to help. I wouldn't listen to ImpGuardPanzies about buying sentinels and hoards. That would be a huge waste of money to start off and show you how annoying painting 60 guardsmen can really be fast.

Starting off with Forgeworld can get pricey, so pick up things that are universal. Chimeras. Can't go wrong there. Leman Russ demolisher kit (magnitize the turret options). Leman russ regular (magnitize the turret options). That way, you have a solid start and 6 Leman russ options in any given battle. Look into the valkyrie and vendetta. The vendetta conversion kit is worth it. Buy me one when you order $150 or more from forgeworld while youre at it.

I can consistently win or tie any game with a casual or serious player with CSM, Eldar, SM, or Tyranid using my IG force. Its just knowing the strengths and ignoring all the fluffy options that are unnecessary. I never take sponsons on my leman russes besides bolters when I play 'nids. I have never taken a grenade launcher. Plasma is your friend. That should get you started.

This means that you're going to want to play your wallet close to your chest when you start out. By this I mean start building infantry with just lascannons. When I started, I ran my squads with a grenade launcher and a heavy bolter. When I decided to dump that in favor of something else, I needed to make 3 new infantry models per squad. Conversely, I've never regretted making more lasgunners, while I have other stuff sitting on the shelf that I no longer use.

As well, one of the fluff-wise logistical strengths of the guard is that it's all mounted on basically two chassis. This is also a logistical strength in the hobby world. What I'd suggest is this: if you know you're going to have anything built on a chimera chassis, then buy a couple of stock chimeras. Assemble them in such a way where you do the wheels and the front, but you leave the back of it blank. The models come with convenient sliding rails that allow you to build stuff out of plasticard and then just slide it on.

This way, instead of spending $90 for a basilisk and $60 for a hellhound, you spend $80 on a pair of chimeras that can be either hellhounds, OR basilisks (or whatever else you want them to be - all you need is some time and some plasticard). That way, you can retool your army based on your fancy, and you're not stuck with chassis that have guns glued to them that you don't want to use anymore.

Here's an example of a chimera chassis I put together and then glued a couple of pieces of plasticard together to make a flat bed that slides in:

In this case, I built a manticore on top that is really easy to slide out and slide in a scratch-built anything else should I so desire (I even still have the original bitz to make it into a chimera proper, if I want).

That and while I don't use magnets myself, they are also good for achieving this kind of multi-purposeness out of your models.

Starting new IG army

Like always, I'm going to flog my codex review:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/5th_Edition_Imperial_Guard_Codex_Review_%28Polonius%29

You'll get lots of advice on IG, as there are a lot of ways to play it, and lots of successful generals. The key is to consider everything, but try stuff out before you make an commitments. Proxy units, playtest lists, and generally get used to the IG. It sounds obvious, but they play very differently from Chaos: the units are fragile, terrible in close combat, but very cheap.

I personally favor a mechanized approach: spamming melta vets, backed up by executioners and a medusa, a valk with melta CCS, and a small platoon for objective holding. I think the melta vet might be the best troop choice in the game, and the executioner, while very expensive, amazingly powerful as well as versatile.

I'm less bullish on the basic LRBT. I think it's lost a lot usefulness in 5th.

My point: make your peace with probably have models you built and painted that underperform. I have 48 stormtroopers that rarely see the table top, along with plenty of other goodies, but I'd rather play the good stuff.

I agree with the vendetta. Upgrade kit is worth it. I would save forge world until you start apocolipic games, unless its bits or conversions. Puting a few flamers in your vaylkrie would also proove helpful. Dont forget the 3 lascannons are twin-linked. And for 10pts you get 2 heavy bolters at 3 shots e.a. A lot of fire power for a fast attack. Not to mention it can deepstrike.. Starting off w lemen russes is also good, whomever said that first..i agree. But i would recomend a batle tank over a demolisher. both have ordinace sized blast, one is long ranged, the other short. It depends what you want to start with
