My first foray into 40k miniature customization

Hey guys, new member here, see my welcome thread for personal information and such here - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/308080.page

So as an introduction into the world of customizing 40k mini's I went to the only local retailer that GW lists on their site that's still in business and the guy handed me the Assault on Black Reach starter set with 3 precast SM's and my first pack of GS. I didn't realize they weren't pieced up at the time or I wouldn't have bought it, but oh well. I really just wanted to learn the limits of the GS and dump some ideas out of my head onto the guys. I can't wait to get some terminators and some bitz (or make my own) and go to town!

I'm totally open for crits, but please realize that I only discovered the wonders of vaseline + GS halfway through, so there are lots of fingerprints to go around. As is the case of taking pics, plenty of areas pop up that don't look so great!! Live and learn!

First up was the one I designated as the leader of the 3, I wanted to try studding his shoulder armor, and give him a cloak. The cloak didn't turn out like I wanted, so I'll give it another attempt later.

Second was my (heavy?) flamer conversion. I repurposed his power pack into fuel tanks and ran a line to the modded bolter. I also gave his legs some flames.

The last of my three guys I decided I wanted to make a real conversion, so I chopped his legs off and adjusted them to be kneeling. Then I had to turn his bolter into a side-loading model to accommodate. I'm pretty happy with how his shoulder came out with the scrap wire mesh.

I mixed up a bit too much GS once so I decided to make a company standard as well. It's not the most ornate, but I like it. The round part has a hammered look to it that didn't show in the pic. I like how the skull came out, too.

Then, as I was taking pics on my turn table (read: cake decorating lazy susan) I noticed that my flamer was having a stand off with the head of my other 1:6 scale project!

It was a load of fun sculpting at such a small scale, and I'm looking forward to getting some actual pieced up marines that I can play with. As I get more comfortable with GS, and tiny work, I hope to be able to share some cooler conversions with you guys but I thought these were a good start, at least.

Thanks for your time, and hopefully your comments!

PS: I'm not that great of a painter, but I plan on giving it a shot sooner or later. Would you guys recommend regular acrylic paint (all I currently have) or is the citadel stuff a necessity?

I like the Flamer conversion. I just think, if possible, could you flatten the barrel? It seems to clash a little with the streamline pattern of the SM.

Thanks,
Felsi

Wow thats awesome work for a first start! However that flamers helmet add-ons might be a bit over the top but you never really know until its painted. Bottom line great work!

I agree with both of you, actually. I regretted the face bits and was really trying to keep the barrel from getting squished - I might have to go back and revisit that barrel, it's bothering me. Thanks for the comments!
